Get Up. Stand Up.

So I'm at the grocery store today and I go to the checkout line and there is a sign hung over the one with the shortest line that says "closed" . So I go into the next, very long, line. After a few minutes the cashier of the first line starts calling out "no waiting here." I say to him " your sign says closed." A very snarky "But my light is on" was his reply. Then he looks at the bag boy and points at me with his thumb and nods his head in a "what an idiot" gesture. So I said " you're a real jerk, you know that?" "Excuse me?" he said. So I repeated the question for him. At this his only reply was a blank stare. I could see his mind working fast to come up with something snappy to say, so I didn't wait. I asked him if instead of trying to make his customers feel stupid, wouldn't it be better to just change the sign. He claimed he wasn't trying to make me feel stupid. So I pointed out that if that were true he would just have changed the sign and saved us both the attitude. Some of the people around me looked at me with smiles that seemed to say "well said" and some looked surprised I had spoken at all. It made me wonder when it became normal to just quietly accept shabby treatment from people we give money to. You get attitude everywhere these days. Department stores, restaurants, the post office, the police or any civil service department for that matter. Have you had any dealings with the DMV lately? My god we literally pay these people, and still there is no common courtesy to speak of. Don't stand for it. Seriously, it's about time to take our standards up a notch. People can only treat you poorly if you let them. In short, don't take no guff!
