Harlem Pop Trotters: Penwick and Plongee Synthetique
From: Harlem Pop Trotters (Les Treteaux, 1975 / Kif/Melodie En Sous Sol, 1994)
So, back to my neighbours across the pond with another classic French funk release, this time from the mysteriously mustached bikers that called themselves the Harlem Pop Trotters. Bizarre name, bizarre front cover, but a great album of jazz/funk fusion.
I won't even pretend to have got my hand on an OG version of this as everything has it's limits including my bank account. This is from a French reissue by Kif/Melodie En Sous Sol from 2004 which is very reasonably priced and definitely worth picking up. The original version appeared on the highly collectible Les Treteaux label home to many much sought after records including the legendary Godchild.
To my shame I know pretty much nothing about this band apart from that this appears to be their only album and that it was released in the mid seventies. I have also been led to believe that the men behind it are Library musicians Jean-Claude Pierric and Francois Rolland though I can't back that up with proof. I like to think that this adds to the legend of the album but that could just be me being lazy.

Bonjour JC! Je viens de poster ce message plus haut, mais il ne semble pas vouloir apparaître... J'essaye ici aors... J'ai remarqué que tu as coproduit "Goldchild" (que tu n'as pas encore remis sur ce nouveau blog) avec Joël Daydé. Il avait été le premier interprète de "Mamy Blue" en 1971. Cette chanson (musique Hubert Giraud, paroles Phill Trim) lui avait été proposée par Léo Missir. Daydé eut l'idée d'ajouter du gospel, et enregistra la chanson à Londres. "Mamy Blue" reste surtout dans les mémoires dans sa version française par Nicoletta (paroles du compositeur Hubert Giraud), puis repris à l'identique la même année par un groupe espagnol "Pop Tops", puis par Dalida, Ricky Shayne, etc. Résultat : c'est Daydé qui passe pour un copieur. L'année suivante, il récidive en adaptant en anglais un succès italien, "Jésahel", repris aussitôt en français par ...Nicoletta!Joel Daydé, apparemment, est toujours actif : http://www.joeldayde.com/

Je collectionne les disques avec des motos sur les pochettes et je prépare actuellement un article pour la revue Juke Box Magazine. Je me pose quelques questions sur les productions de Jean-Claude Pierric. Tout d’abord le disque Harlem Pop Trooters :
-La photo de la pochette est une photo d’Irving Penn pour un reportage dans la revue américaine Look. A y regarder de plus près les deux visages des filles de la photo originale ont été affublés de moustaches. Y a-t-il une raison ?
-Sur l’album Rock And Roll quels sont les membres du groupe The Devils Angels From L.A et en particulier qui assure le chant ? Qui se cachent derrière les pseudonymes Tucson West et Ronnie Sollins ?
-Le disque italien de Barry Smith Guitar Boogie propose trois titres de Jean-Claude Pierric et François Rolland. Barry Smith est il un artiste où s’agit-il d’un pseudonyme ? le titre When The Saints est crédité : Trad . arr . Laguens La photo de la pochette étant de Michel Laguens est-il vraiment l’arrangeur ou est-ce seulement un clin d’œil ?
