The other day I had to go to the Magistrates' Court in Johannesburg - which isn't the greatest of places to be in. Anyway, when the court recessed for lunch we decided to leave (I was there with my brother and sister). As we got to the exit of the courthouse suddenly all these police officers ran into the building wearing kevlar vests and carrying guns and assault rifles. Now having lived in Johannesburg for quite sometime, I didn't really think twice about it until we got to the exit door and we were told that we couldn't leave. The reason? Some criminals awaiting trial had escaped and the courthouse was effectively now in lockdown mode.

So not relishing the thought of being stuck in a huge building with possibly dangerous criminals on the loose, we eventually found a security guard who kindly agreed to let us out through the basement exit. We didn't even want to take the chance of being separated. I'm just glad that we weren't stuck in there for hours waiting for the police to track down these criminals. I had nightmare visions of being held hostage and being dragged off into a getaway car - even if the unlikely criminal happened to be Wentworth Miller

And, no, that isn't the stuff of movies - it actually could happen in South Africa. As it is these courthouse jail breaks happen far too often.
Guess I should count myself lucky that we escaped unharmed and that no-one else was hurt too!
