My view on China hosting the Olympics...

I have kept largely quiet about the recent China controversy and I know that some people have commented that the Tibetan protests and riots have occurred at a very convenient time when the Olympics are about to start.

Well, could you think of a better time to make your message known? Wouldn't you take advantage of an opportunity when the spotlight is on your country to highlight the human rights abuses that are going on there? Was South Africa any different?

JCL,

I am very sad for the situation in Tibet, China, South Africa, Dar fur ,extremely sad :frown:

As a woman born and raised in Greece I know that the Olympics are an event that even Hitler respected.
I think we should leave the idea of Olympics without a blood shed and misery. It is a unique idea, let's leave it alone.

The issues that are now spotlighted should be out under the sun 365 days a year.Every year. Every day.

The power of our voice shouldn't be covered behind a torch.
It should the the torch on it's own!!

I did write a post on Olympics, I did try to use humor and reality to present a situation that it is not humorous at all.

Thanks for sharing your opinion with us

Hi Ellinidata

I do agree that the torch bearers should be left alone to run their course. I do not think that they deserve to be mobbed since the Olympics has no bearing on China's stance.

It is unfortunate though that a country like China should even get to host the Olympics - since they do not honour the spirit of the Olympics. Most probably Hitler didn't either. If anything, hosting the Olympics glossed over his plans for expansion and persecution of the Jews.

I don't think China is going to be that lucky and for that I am glad.

I did try to access your blog but somehow I only get to see your Info/About page. I would be interested to read your post

Take care.

Hi Yomeriux

It makes me sick too. My post is not an indictment of Chinese people - but if you have ever dealt with a Chinese government official you can only feel sorry for what people in China have to endure. Chinese government officials are terribly hostile. They live by this code of courtesy - but manage to distort it into something truly alien.

Hi JCL

I'm a Chinese. I don't know what I felt when I read your harsh words, you know, it's not easy to tell the government and the nation apart clearly for guys who were educated in China.

But I will try to do that, it is the basis of all arguments any way.

Thanks for your concern about this Olympics, the Chinese need to accept all the criticism whether it is right or wrong, we are not on a lonely planet you know.

Still, I'm willing to share with you here what I thought about the Olympic predicament:

Although the "Communist China" won the Olympics years before, it is the common Chinese who paid for this game. China is not a superpower, on the contrary, China is filled with poor guys, with boys who were struggling to survive in the severe society.

One of my cousin have to work in a American-invested factory to make a living when she was just 16. When she was in the middle school, which is also my Alma Mater, she won the 1000-metre race in that annual school sports meeting. She is really talented about running, I'm proud of her. This middle school now accomodate over 10,000 students in the campus, she is best in her grade, that is, she beated nearly 2000 guys. She loves running, but her scores were sucks.

later on, Her father have to close his clinic in this poor inland town because the health care reform of China. He has 2 girls and a little boy, he have to make a living to support this family. So, he went to the advanced developed City: Wuxi, where 40% of the world's laptops are produced, like HP Compaq, Dell, Acer, Asus, IBM/Lenovo Think Pad... maybe you are now using one of these brand.

He and my aunt finally chose to sell vegetables in a little market of this city. Every 01:30, he will wake up to the wholesale market to buy the mushrooms, beans, potatoes or something like these, then sell them to the common nearby inhabitants day after day.

My cousin would work from 19:00 to 05:00 every day to get paid for 1200 RMB, that is, 172 US Dollars for a month. She is always dreaming to lead a better life, but she have to help her mother to sell the potatoes every morning, for it is a hard work to clean the potatoes, people don't buy the dirty thing. This is her life, She is only 19 now.

When I asked him, do you love running? She answered excitedly to me, Yes, I love, I love running, it's great to past all opponents and enjoy the wind. I'm dreaming one day I can go to Beijing to see the Olympics, it's great, people there are all the son of wind. There is always a fair play place in the world.

After I told her there are ao many people abroad said it is a shame to let China host this game, She thought I was kidding. "Why, why they are now boycutting the Olympics", she went mad. I told her that many people think China have no human rights, Hitler's Deutsche Reich didn't have human right either, many good willing people think it is alike, I recommended.

She said if China is so evil, what China have done to you, high price laptops? bad shoes? Did China killed your Mom? Didn't China have suffer your invasion years ago? Aren't there 80% of the Chinese antiques in your museums are robbed from China 100 years ago? How?

Many young guys are always think things like this. Many people feel hurt, including my father. He was once a soldier, and have a hot temper. Very very few common people think the foregners have a good willing to teach us how to behave on the planet after they logged on this site: www.anti-cnn.com

I mean, the Chinese is innocent, they are just want to lead a better life, and they did have achieved some little success: years ago, the Chinese have to bear the shortage of food and knowledge after the USSR turned to be their enemy after 1960s, now they have a annual 2,100 billion USD international trade in 2007. They don't lie to get this, they don't sell the oil or iron ore inherited from their forefathers. They strive to won success, they don't rob.

They need a ceremony to get some respect, I mean, like you take the Chinese government and the Chinese people apart, why not give the Chinese people some encourage instead of their stupid government?

You know, when you take China as the Hitler's 3rd Reich, I thought I was taken as the common Deutsch citizen who raise his right hand to swore to pay their homage to the Fuhrer.

Maybe things don't run like this.

And Hi, Ellindata

Greece is a great place, we read Greece like "Hellas", it's a wonderful name, I love Hellas. It's Aristotle's homeland, it's the European Civilization's homeland, ti's the modern world's homeland, and, it is the Olympics' Homeland.

It's great, I know you are concerning about the world's unfair, yes, so many poor people died of hatred or arrogance. I hate the unfair things, people who can lead a comfortable life by killing poor people or squeeze them, people who kill the other just because he is a Shiite or Sunni, people who kill the the other just because she is in his way, people who burnt the Great palace into ashes just because they cannot take so many treasures back home.

The world is full of unfair stuffs, we need to cherish each other to find a way out.

Thanks again for your concern, I know you love Olympics.

Hi Zhouye

Thank you for sharing your perspective. It was exactly what I was hoping to hear - the viewpoint of a Chinese national. I do agree with you, and as I said in my comments, that to protest is okay, but not to boycott. I firmly believe that boycotting the Olympics would be more harmful to China and to innocent people who have nothing to do with all the politics that are involved (both athletes and the Chinese people).

I think that athletes like your cousin deserve to do their best and to partake in the Olympics. I have no doubt that the spirit of the Olympics is invested in people like that.

I understand that Chinese people are very industrious and hard working and maybe to you it would seem that I am not separating the government from the people - but I really do see them as being different. And I would hope to see an improvement for all people in China, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. You see, I am a Buddhist, born and bred, and for me this issue is certainly a personal one.

Thank you for your comments.

zhouye.ah,

thank you for your kind words,
I do understand your frustration and I empathize with your aunt, your cousin, you friends and neighbors.
If there is a Nation that has disciplined citizens it is China.
The question here is how this discipline was forced on the people.
I personally promise you that I will always speak for the poor, innocent, overworked, unkindly treated humans on earth.
I live in a country that looks very bad and judged awfully these days.
When the name Americans is in a sentence many Europeans spit on the air. Including my own family in Greece.
I love America, I do live here, I gave birth to two wonderful American citizens my children.
I am against the war as many Americans are,
I am supporting our troops however that are in harms way.
I want all those poor boys and girls that joint the army to get an education , to come home safe and soon.
Do you see here the connection?
Chinese,
Americans,
both are countries that are spreading pain in a different way.
Both countries that their majority citizens are peaceful and loving people.
Nothing personal here, it is just an out cry for a change,.
Please stay well,
and always say what you hold in your mind and in your heart.Always.

Hi All

It's so nice to find a Buddhist in South Africa, My Grandma was a Buddhist too, very peaceful religion.

The Buddhism was introduced to China nearly 2000 years ago, it influenced China profoundly. The ancient Chinese thought it's pretty nice, so they introduced this religion to Korea, Japan, and Tibet later on. The great Indian teached half Asia to think, It's really an engaging story.

I went to the Buddhist temple nearby to pray for a good score in the coming NCEE (National College Entrance Examination), I prayed for Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva's blessing when my Grandma was ill, I went to Mount Potalaka(Putuo Island, East China) with my friends to seek for a better life. The King Sontzen Gampo of Tibet built the Potalaka Palace in the name of Avalokitesvara to marry the Princess WenCheng from the Tang Dynasty, you see, the Tibetan(Turbo) and the Han were a family for really a long time.
Family is family, no matter what happens.

I know some people think the Tibet should be free, I can understand their concern: It's a modern world, everybody has the right to decide his/her life. But believe me, in Chinese, "Free Tibet" means take Tibet apart from China as an independent country, that's why so many Chinese are angry about this story. If somebody think it is still OK to split 1/4 territory of one country out is how the justice works, believe me, the world would gonna be a total chaos under his/her rule.

The Han and the Tibetan were brothers for a long time, why the story turned out to be like this? I'm not a schemer, but some other countries did have done many things under the table, like Britains in 1903, like Americans in the cold war.

It's no big deal to invade or try to split another country, but it's hypocritical to always take themselves as the One or the justice. You know, even the main propaganda of CPC(Communist Party of China) Renmin(People) Daily did declaim itself's loyalty to the Party, not the people.

Sometimes things varies, everyone has part of the truth, maybe the truth lies between each other. The one who thinks he is all the justice to accuse the other always turned out to be a joke.

And about my little cousin, I don't think it is a problem. Like the American Dream, there does exist a Chinese Dream: In spite of the unfair, one can obtain the success if he/she insist on working hard. She is confident to carry on her part-time job to sell the advertisement for a local newspaper, I'm proud of her.

I totally understand some American's frustration on the war in the middle East, it should have never been happened. It always happens the justice kills the innocents. Socrates laid the foundations of logic, but he died of the logic based democracy.

The world needs love and understanding, really.

That's what I want to share with you all, thanks for your concern.
