Just arrived and already I think I messed up -- please excuse

I've read about them, but I've never even seen a blog in operation before, let alone start one! On setup I didn't even know what to do with the enable ?MMS blog so I left it blank.
If this gets through, these are my current issues:
1) my ISP installs its own version of IE 6 that seems to have plenty of spyware infections that come with it. Also, they provided me -- 7 years ago, I think it was -- with a SpeedStream 5260 (that I only discovered last night can be upgraded to a fully functional router in the form of bios/firmware changes to make it a no longer supported SpeedStream 5660). The modem came with dsl service and a program called Efficient Networks that also seems to track my every move. (I got all that stuff for my then high school sophomore son and never used it myself until 15 months ago). I've got some directions from the net on how to proceed with the changes, but I don't know how I would connect to the net after that is done. I guess that's my only significant isse.
I have to go out for about half an hour, but I'll be back to see if any of you out there can guide tonight.
