Storms and catkins

Spring seems to come ever earlier here. It's only Februari, but birds are singing as if it's March, and many daffodils seem to be blooming a week early. Some trees are budding, too, also seemingly earlier than normal. But Februari is also still the storm season, and we've been having some strong wind lately.
Yesterday, when I was walking home, I passed below a few tall trees. A lot of small branches had been blown off in the strong wind and when I took a closer look, they had sprouting buds - it looked as if they would become some kind of catkins. I have no idea what type of tree this was, and normally the branches are much too high to see details like this. On a whim, I picked up a few of the budding branches, and took them home where I put them in a little jar.
When I woke up this morning, most of the buds were already twice the size they were yesterday! I took a few pictures - I think they are quite beautiful. And now, when I'm writing this, they have already grown even more. I'll try to take a few more pictures tomorrow.
Does anyone know what kind of tree this is?
