Printing Error or Confused Author

Have you ever encounter some sort of character name mixed up in one of the books you have been reading? Well, we did or at least I did. Yet I can't be sure if it is really printing error or some kind of mixed up as who knows maybe the author of the book might have some story or revelation toward the end of the book. Or maybe I missed some important clues while reading it. Anyhow if indeed it is a printing error we were kept busy for a little while trying to read through the books again and type out some lines from the books to each other. Well, I can't really do any online check for forum or discussion about the book just in case I might stumble into some spoilers.

Subject:Hand In Jars

Gared is the earless one who held back in the prologue and was executed in chapter 1 of book 1. The very guy we were talking about yesterday. His hand can not have been magical, right?

Jared is definitely the one who was later turned to an Other and brought back to the Wall. The references don't mention Gared's hand being in a jar, however.

I think there must indeed have been a printing / editing / writing error. I will definitely look out for it while reading those bits.

According to this good reference site: http://www.towerofthehand.com ...

Gared: A ranger of the Night's Watch.

Gared served as a member of the Watch for forty years. During the last winter, he lost both ears, three toes, and the little finger of his left hand to frostbite. He was part of a ranging with Ser Waymar Royce and Will tracking a party of wildling raiders. On the ninth day of the ranging, they came upon a wildling camp. Gared watched the horses as Ser Waymar and Will investigated. He fled in terror after the death of his two companions, and was branded a deserter. He was caught at a holdfast near Winterfell, where he is held until Lord Eddard Stark cames to judge him and executes him.

Physical Description: He is past fifty, and has lost both ears, three toes, and the little finger of his left hand to frostbite.

Jafer Flowers: A ranger of the Night's Watch.

Jafer was part of Benjen Stark's ranging to discover the fate of Ser Waymar Royce. What happened to him is not known, but his body was discovered near Castle Black months later. The body came back to life as a wight and killed Ser Jaremy Rykker and four others before being destroyed.

ACOK Tyrion VII: [...] Ser Alliser Thorne with a rotted hand in a jar.1 Tyrion decides he will not see Ser Alliser and orders poor quarters found for him. [...] 1 - The hand of the wight, Jafer Flowers (AGOT 61).

I really can't find anything about Gared's hand anywhere... even in fan discussion about Gared's story (how he came to be at Winterfell in the first place).

>Jared is definitely the one who was later turned to an Other and brought back to the >Wall. The references don't mention Gared's hand being in a jar, however.

It's Jafer Flower and Jared that are mixed up. Nothing to do with Gared. Gared is over and dead executed in chapter 1 AGOT.

In AGOT Jafer and Othor were both found and bought back to the wall. The name Jared were never use in AGOT.

(AGOT page 522)

And suddenly Ghost was back, stalking softly between two weirwoods. The wolf had something in his jaws. Something black.

"What's he got there?" asked Bowen Marsh, frowning.

"To me, Ghost." Jon knelt. "Bring it here."

The direwolf trotted to him. Jon heard Samwell Tarly's sharp intake of breath.

"Gods be good," Dywen muttered. "That's a hand."

Following in the next chapter of Jon, a party led by Ghost in search for the remaining of the body after a hand was found. There they found Othor and Jafer Flower's corpses.

(AGOT page 552)

Jafer's right wrist ended in the ruin of torn flesh ans splintered bone left by Ghost's jaws. His right hand was floating in a jar of vinegar back in Maester Aemon's tower. His left hand, still at the end of his arm, was as black as his cloak.

This part are clearly written in book one. Jafer and Othor were the 2 corpses that came to life. Othor burnt in The Old Bear's room (Joer Mormont-Lord Commander Night Watch) by Jon Snow. The following day Lord Mormont gave Longclaw to Jon for saving his life and said this..

Ser Alliser Thorne left yestermorn for Eastwatch-by-the-sea. Jon asked why. Mormont snorted."Because I sent him, why do you think? He's bringing the hand your Ghost tore off the end of Jafer Flower's wrist. I have commanded him to take ship to King's Landing and lay it before this boy king. That should get young Joffrey's attention, I think.... (AGOT pg 657)

This is when the name game start.... (ACOK page 297). Just in case it might be printing error, I checked both books of same title but it's the same name (JARED) use. Though both books are of the same publisher, HarperCollins edition 1999(yours) 2003(mine).

"Ser Alliser"! Tyrion exclaimed. "Why, I had no notion that you'd come to court. You should have sent me word."

"I have, as well you know." Thorne was as prickly as his name, a spare, sharp-featured man of fifty, hard eyed and hard-handed..."I have been shunned, ignored, and left to wait like some baseborn servant."

"The Lord Commander sent me to His Grace the king," Thorne answered. "I am sent to tell you we found two rangers, long missing. They were dead, yet when we brought the corpses back to the Wall they rose again in the night. One slew Ser Jaremy Rykker, while the second tried to murder the Lord Commander."

"You're certain that they are dead this time?' Tyrion asked mildly.

"They were dead the first time." Ser Alliser snapped. "Pale and cold, with black hands and feet. I brought Jared's hand, torn from his corpse by the bastard's wolf." "It...rotted to pieces while I waited, unheard. There's naught left to show but bones."

Indeed....I think so la but just got to make my case clearer. After all it's an innocent mistake, JaFER and JaRED. FER or RED who can tell the difference.

P/s; Nevertheless it's not a very kind mistake. See the trouble it caused.

Yeah - must be a mistake. Don't think Thorne could have mucked-up the name by accident. Strange that it's not mentioned on the net anywhere. I'm now certain I was also confused by this when I was reading that book!

I'm really curious why no-one else spotted it... could it have been fixed in later prints? If we ever see it in a bookshop we'll have to look for that section again... ha ha ha!

After all that I wonder if anyone out there might stumble onto my blog and care to have a bit of discussions about it. wink
