My OperaMac Book running 10.5.8 runs slow

I am trying to edit in Final Cut Pro 6 and I have reinstalled it 4 times in an attempt to use my Mac Book. I have 2 GB of RAM and use an Iomega external drive. The error message that frames are being dropped is driving me insane. Can someone help?
