Check out this talk at TED (hosted by Bill Gates). Salman Khan explains his project. The basics: he created a bunch of tutorial videos that teach basics in math and different sciences to his cousins - since there was no reason against it, he published them on youtube (I think...). Suddenly a lot of people find it amazingly awesome, since his style apparently made learning math for example fun for kids that didn't like or understand it at school (he actually even helped kids with autism this way). Based on this, a huge project with a ridiculous amount of video tutorials rises and even makes it into classrooms as a foundation for the teaching there - completely for free...
