JAPANESE PRINT SIZES

Japanese Print Sizes

Obosho

Japanese prints come in different sizes following certain standards. However these formats are not comparable to Western Standard (ISO , ANSI or DIN) and are only approximate. Paper sizes varied from era to era , and even within the same time period. Japanese papermakers use slightly different recipes and moulds and they may use the same terms in reference to slightly different sized paper.
cut into two , Oban

The actual sizes can vary slightly by up to one inch (oban) or more (larger formats). The words
tate - e and yoko - e may appear after the paper size (e.g. oban tate - e or chuban yoko - e). They refer to the alignment of the print , tate - e is a vertically aligned (portrait) print , while yoko - e is a horizontal (landscape) print.
cut into four , Chuban

The knowledge of print sizes , even if only approximate , is sometimes quite helpful. Many ukiyo - e art dealers refer to their print sizes using these names instead of mentioning the precise measures. The most common print sizes are Oban , Chuban and Aiban. Japanese prints were made on the " hosho " paper and there is no exact standard for the size for a hosho sheet.
cut into four , by division along oban's long axis , Chutanzaku

The various formats of Japanese prints were cut from
a large hosho sheet called
" o - bosho " to reduce (approximate is 58 cm x 31 cm). Oban was the most commonly used format and made by cutting a piece of obosho vertically , very roughly 25 cm x 38 cm , comparable to the B4
(250 mm x 353 mm) paper standard today.
cut into eight , Yotsugiri
Chuban is also used to refer to a size of paper about half the size of oban , by division along its short axis. This size measures roughly 19 cm x 25 cm , comparable to the B5
(176 mm x 250 mm) paper standard today. Paper sizes are a bit of a mess. Descriptions considerably vary with source. Four different sources will result in four different sets of measures. The following data is collected from various sources.
