Mozy online backup SUCKS

, , , , , , ,

I used mozy backup, or am using, though not successfully.

I downloaded the program in order to have the files backed up so i could do a reformat on my hard drive.
My first dissapointment was the 13 days it took to upload my modest 60GB hard drive. Next came the realization that if I don't backup my files every 30 days, the data is erased from their server.

Now, I have been trying to restore my data for 4 days. The restore looks like it will take about 3 or 4 days, though I can't, it doesn't give a time estimate. And even if it did, I don't think it would matter, because it freezes every few hours. Now I have "some" of my data backed up, but there are so many files, I don't know which ones for sure. On top of that, the program does NOT ignore the files you have already uploaded in the event that there is an accident and you have to completely restart the backup, so it has to start ALL OVER AGAIN, and of course, freeze.

That isn't the best part. All of the tech support is in India. And if you don't have a business account, you get no phone support, so you have to try to explain the problem to an Indian who has a set of preset answers to your questions.

Now I have 5,000 music files, all of my documents from 5 years of college and 3 years of professional work, and all my pictures, floating in limbo and it looks like they will never get restored.

I hate this company, the service, the program and the people who service it.

Sean Costello writes: I found your blog while reading some online backup reviews - that's an evil state to be in, and I'm always sorry to hear when people's data is held hostage like this. Full disclosure, I work for a Canadian-based online backup service www.backgroundbackup.ca. Our engine and feature set is extremely strong, our performance (in both directions) is much better, and we provide results-driven telephone and online support from right here in North America. Anyway, we have an internal 'make things right' budget, to be used where we can to cover off the costs of getting folks better protected, especially when things haven't been going well for them elsewhere. Drop our program co-ordinator an email at makethingsright@backgroundbackup.ca, mention my name and this blog address, and we'll get you hooked up with a complimentary account, that will accommodate your files (up to 75 GBs), that doesn't disappear if you don't refresh it every 30 days, and most importantly will not leave you hanging. Hang in there, Sean

Laurent Luce writes: If you are looking for an alternative to Mozy or Carbonite. We just launched our Data Protection service online at www.tomnica.com . Not only it provides a great backup service but it also allows you to wipe or encrypt data in case your device gets lost or stolen. Finally, you can monitor your device: screenshots, webcam + location. All those services in 1 package with a neat web interface. We have a free plan for 1 year. Try it out and let us know what you think. Laurent Luce Director of Software Tomnica, Inc.

Anonymous writes: Mozy is not for anyone needing backup over 3 gb - I tried a restore of 212gb and it was impossible. I am an IT Consultant and I am very technical. It would have taken me 6 months to properly restore data from Mozy. What a waste of money. Save yourself the pain of Mozy - buy a big one-touch external backup drive (KEEP IT AT GROUND LEVEL TO AVOID IT FALLING) and cross your fingers that you can avoid water or fire damage.

Anonymous writes: I have had a miserable time with MozyPro AND MozyHome when my hard drive on my computer crashed. I have now spent over a weeks time in live chats, elevating to new levels, emails, phone calls and more. They are polite but ignorant interactions. Client restore has not worked. Web restore has not worked and they want a lot of money for DVD restore because their software and systems do not work. I have never been this angry about a product. I need my files back! The key aspect to a backup service is not price or UI - You must be able to quickly and effectively restore your files. Period.

writes: I totally agree with you ,Mozy was a real waste of time and money for me ,the backup process took forever plus their support team couldn’t help me with my problems , so I had to cancel my subscription with them. Currently I am using Timeline Cloud they backup to Amazon S3 so it’s safer than Mozy also the set up only took 5 minutes which is great comparing to Mozy. They have a 2 week trial so I signed up and so far everything is going smoothly, definitely recommend checking them .You can check them here: http://www.timelinecloud.com/
