Reminiscence
Hey Guys!
Today I finally have the time to write about the topic I have wanted to write about since 10 days. Of course, I am talking about our exchange in Chicago. I want to go through the periods chronologically, and there I have to start nearly a year ago...
It was in June 2007. The end of the school year was already in sight and we were in school to fill the rooms only. However, as always, our advisor, Mrs. Cate, had some sheets for us. But the sheets she gave us this time were special: The topic were the language trips in year 10. You could choose from 3 different destinations: Antibes in France, Dublin in Ireland and....Chicago in the United States of America. It was like a dream coming true: I remember when I had always been so angry that our school didn‘t travel to US. And there it was - black on green: Chicago.
Of course, I and several other classmates chose Chicago as our favourite, and then, in the next school year, things were getting more exact. We were told that Prof. Gmeindl would come with us, that we were going to Woodlands Academy and would stay in the boarding house there.
Then, things became quite about the exchange until the year 2008. We then knew that also our Headmaster would come with us too and that we were also partly staying at host families.
In the weeks before the exchange, we were all thinking about presents to buy, things to do and see over there and what we should take with us. In the last few days, it became the main issue. Although we were all very excited, we were a little bit worried or irritated, as our teachers told us it was going to be „work, work, work“ (Of course, in the end, these worries turned out to have been nonsense, but we had not known that yet!).
Thursday, 3/27
As our French test was over, I was really relieved. Finally, there was no challenge before Chicago anymore. Everyone chilled and was full of anticipation. After school, I went to the city with Kevin Chi to show him a bank where they didn‘t charge any fees for changing Euros into Dollars. After that, we had lunch at McDonalds. I still remember that we met his ex-girlfriend there, but still, it was good. We still had to suffer from the McDonalds sickness a few minutes after, but anyway, I went to the drug store and then I was on my way home. Well, now it was packing time, as we were going to check our luggage in the following day. I got some clothes, went out again to buy some perfume and well, my suitcase was full. It was already evening, and after having watched Dorfers Donnerstalk I went to bed.
Friday, 3/28
The last day in Austria! Most of us took their luggage to school because we were not getting home before checking-in (fortunately, my father drove it to City Air Terminal). Well, on this last day, no one really concentrated on school anymore. OK, no one does that either on a normal day. Whatever, after school, we quickly got some food at Burger King (very creative) and went back for our Waltz - Reminder - Class. One hour of dancing later we packed our things and were on our way to Wien - Landstraße (after having waited about 15 minutes for our headmaster to come). There, I met my parents and my luggage. Seeing the Check-In‘s already gave me a taste of travel feeling....back home, I finally packed my hand luagagge too. For dinner, I had one last bottle of Cider (2 weeks of absence...omG). At night, I picked up my laptop with my father and on our way back, when we drove past Rabenhof (engl.: Ravenyard) theater, I saw comedian Stermann standing on the street. Probably has no meaning, but I just wanted to mention it.
Saturday
(Note: Bernadette is Bernadette Hutson. Berni is our Bernadette Hofmann).
Finally, our departure day! When I woke up and realised it was going to be my last wake-up in Vienna for 2 weeks, I was really happy^^
After having had breakfast and a shower, my mother, father and I drove to Vienna International Airport. Of course, I had lost the sheet where the meeting point was noted, but we eventually found our group. Well, after a few minutes it was time to go, so I quickly said goodbye to my parents and was gone. We were not allowed to do any duty free shopping, which made us a little bit angry, but anyway, an hour later we were 10.000 meters over the ground.
The flight was ok, it was funny to see 8 people looking at one laptop to watch Echt Fett (Engl.: Really Fat).
After we had landed, we were welcomed by a delegation from Woodlands: Mrs. Marko, Mr. Grossman, Mrs. Montagne and her daughter, Maryl. They were really really nice, and we felt really great. We put our luggage into the school bus and drove to Lake Forest. Seeing an advertisment saying „Embryos are babies: Don‘t kill life“ on the highway confused and irritated me, but I didn‘t think about it anymore a minute later.
Finally, we arrived at Woodlands Academy. We were then welcomed by Bernadette, a sophomore girl. Everyone of us liked her at first sight, although her first impression on us didn‘t turn out to be true. She was really formal in the beginning, but then, after a day, she became normal Bernadette. Whatever, when we entered our rooms (I was with Kevin Chi and Toni, Kevinho was with Lukas), we were pleasantly surprised by the gifts from our guides we found there: CD‘s, candy and greet cards.
We were told to come downstairs a few minutes later, but when we boys came there, we didn‘t find anyone. We thought we were going somewhere, and so we went outside. Unfortunately, we also did not know that the doors were locked. We were standing outside, no one could hear us and strangely, our cellphones did not work either. 15 minutes later, when we had already tried another entrance, Mr. Grossman found us and led us into the cafeteria, where our laughing colleagues, deep-dish pizza and Cokes were waiting for us. It was just great. We socialised with Bernadette, got some information about Woodlands and enjoyed everything. After dinner, Bernadette showed us around in the school. Especially the prizes and the GYM left a deep impression on us. Well, we then „relaxed“ for some 20 minutes and then drove to Starbucks. An American Starbucks! Finally! The coffee eventually put us alive again.
We spent the rest of the evening unpacking our things and not believing our luck and happiness.
Sunday
After having been forced to get up really early for a Sunday (8 am? 9 am?) we had some bagels and coffee for breakfast. No offense, but the American coffee (except for Starbucks) tasted like colored water, to say it in a nice way.
Then, our big trip to Chicago was on schedule. We were driven to the Metra (local train) station and took the train to downtown Chicago. On our way, Julia, Bernadette and I had the pleasure of having a man sitting next to us who really loved to hear himself talk. Fortunately, he did not speak French, so he didn‘t get that we were making fun of him.
Downtown, I had the honor of pushing Julia in her wheelchair around. We walked through the city until we arrived at Old St. Patrick‘s church, where we stopped over for a not-so quick mass. After we had holied ourselves, we went to have lunch at Lou Mitchell‘s, where we also had to wait about 25 minutes to get seated. Their slogan was: „Serving the worlds finest coffee.“ Well, maybe Vienna is not part of the world, but for me, it was still American coffee. The food was excellent though.
The next part of the the programme was probably the best one: Shopping on Michigan Avenue. On our way there, we crossed Millenium Park and found out why Chicago was famous for it‘s modern architecture. A „Honk-to-Impeach“ action against George Bush made me especially happy.
Well, at the start of Michigan Avenue, we split into groups and went into the world of shopping. Although we only had 1 1/2 hours, I was able to buy fabulous stuff at GAP and Macy‘s. Now it was already 5 pm, and so we headed back to the train station.
On our way back, Julia and I again encountered a strange person - he looked at us the whole time until he got out of the train.
Whatever, in the evening, we met the other boarders and had a gouter (special desert, chocolate fondue, ice cram...very good!). The night was again dominated by us watching Lord of the Weed or talking endlessly.
Monday
Our first day of school! You could already see the excitement in the air. I met my day guide Lily and she then took me to homeroom. The first period then started at 8:30. The fact that it was Chemistry excited me even more, but when we then fed turles and were showed some crabbs, I was a little bit confused. Whatever, Modern European History was cool too. The teacher, Dr. Scheiber, seemed to be a very competent man, although he didn‘t like Wikipedia. Then I had two free periods, one because the teacher was sick and the other one was on schedule. These lessons are a kind of good thing, because they allow you to relax, study or do some last-minute homework. As we did not have to do the homework, we more or less just chilled out in the library or somewhere else in the building. After my free periods, there was lunch. The rest of the school day was quite relaxed...Social Justice was an interesting subject. We talked about the differences between Direct Aid and Structural Change and then what you can do to valorize a really bad, drug driven neighborhood. The teacher seemed to be nice but also a little bit hippie-like.
Anyway, after school Bernadette told us there was going to be a trip to a mall, and of course we all went there. After we had spent a few hours at Abercrombie & Fitch, Hot Topic and McDonalds (seems to be obligatory), we had to go back again. Dinner was followed by an evening of soccer. It was quite an interesting experience, the American girls play way better than the Austrian^^
Tuesday
I don‘t really remember this day well. We went to school, but I think we left a little bit earlier as we went to the Lake Forest County museum. One part dealt with the history of the region, in the others there was an exhibition on postcards and on the art of album covers. It was really well made, and after we had seen everything we walked around the local lake^^
In the evening, we were staying in the library with the other boarders watching videos on Youtube, showing us funny pictures and enjoying our time.
Wednesday
This day, we only went to school for the first 4 periods. After that, we drove to the city, to Wrigley Field, home of the famous Chicago Cubs baseball team, to watch their game against Milwaukee Brewers. People told us to really dress warm, and they were right: It was as cold as in Austria. The stadium was huge, and we were quite impressed. There were more people than in any Austrian league game! Well, unfortunately, baseball turned out to be as boring as people had told us. Although the first action in the whole game was a homerun, we left shortly after the brake because everyone was freezing their asses off. It was a cool experience, but the sport and the temperatures were just too bad.
In the evening, there was one of the few incidents with a teacher in the whole trip: Kevin and I left the library 7 minutes late (at 10:07 pm), only to run into our headmaster who was already coming to get us. There was a little misunderstanding (he thought I was making fun of him, which I really did not - I‘d act much more stupidly if I wanted to), but, after a teacher-student conversation a few days later, the whole situation was forgotten.
Thursday
This day, apart from friday and the weekend, was probably the day I enjoyed most in the whole 2 weeks. It was the day we left the boarding house and came to stay with our host families. Wednesday night, we had already packed our things and on Thursday we got up really early, because we had to leave at 7:30. Meeting point was the front desk, and there we saw another taste of American super friendliness: They had already prepared some Starbucks coffee and brownies for us. Again, I was unbelievably happy and astonished. Anyway, after Lukas and I grabbed two packs of Kemp‘s Swiss Style Low-Fat Chocolate Milk each, we entered the bus and left for Chicago. We were going to visit two Sacred Heart schools, Josephinum Academy and the Sacred Heart Schools in Sheridan Road (it‘s schools because they count the boys and the girls school there each). At Josephinum, we were shown around again and then had a little talk with some of their students in their libraby. It was a cool school and the students were really really nice to us. They prepared a buffet for us and we were given sweaters of their school uniform too. At Sheridan Road, we were shown around again. The special thing about this school is that it‘s for boys and for girls, but they are educated in single sex classes. Josephinum was a high school and SR contained a Kindergarten, an Elementary and a Middle school.
Now it was time for lunch. We were dropped off at Bennigans, an Irish-American „Pub“. And we made a huge mistake: Nearly everyone of us took the „Lucky 3“, where you get a starter, a main course and a desert. Well, in the middle of the main course, everyone of us was fully satisfied. A few of us ate a few more bites and were punished by stomach sickness for the next 30 minutes. The deserts nearly remained untouched. So, although everything tasted really good, the American portions were just too big for us Austrians. I wonder how the Americans will think about our food - will they get enough?
However, after this huge burden for our digestive systems, we went over to the Art Institute to see the Winslow / Homer and the steady exhibitions. The W/H exhibition was kind of boring, because it was really crowded, so you couldn‘t really have a look at one picture quitely. After we got out of there, we went over to the Asian statues. And there we had the idea to have a little fun, so we went to different statues, stood there for 5 minutes and then went over to the guard to ask her how much it costed. Well, none of them answered our question, but one of them told us to go to the front desk to ask about an auction. On the top floor, Luke started to imitate a statue. The picture is really cool!
Well, we then visited the shop and when we had to wait for the bus, Luke and I shot some „art pictures“, like a close up of my jeans (cool blue), the wall (white) or my shoes (green caros).
The bus came, and the next step on our journey was Old Orchard Mall to have dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. On the way there, everyone of us had a pleasant sleep, and it was kind of funny to see 9 (Caro H. had already been picked up at the Art Institute) students standing around totally sleepy. Well, after we had woken up again, it was a really cool evening. We were just a little bit hungry but it was good anyway and we had much fun joking around^^
When we were driving back to Woodlands, where the rest of us (some had also been picked up at Old Orchard) was going to meet his hosts, I was getting a little bit nervous: How are they going to be? Will they be strict?
Finally, the bus drove into Woodlands parking lot and we were getting out. There were quite a few cars standing around, and I did not know who to look for. I knew Phoebe, my host student, had an elder brother, and when I saw someone who could be him, I asked „Are you Peter?“ Well, he was. We said hello and then Pete led me to a VW Eos, very sweet car. I liked him immediately. During the drive, I introduced myself, talked about Austria and stuff. We stopped over at Dunkin Donuts to get some...well...donuts for his class tomorrow. There I saw another surprising thing: Paying with a credit card in a drive thru. I had never seen this before. Whatever, he then asked me if I wanted to plug in my iPod, and so we drove home listening to Muse „Stockholm Syndrome“. Finally, we approached the Hoffmann‘s house and entered the garage. When I entered the door, I was welcomed by the huge Newfoundland Chock and Labrador Schyler. They were really cute!
However, then I met Mrs. Hoffmann (who I had actually met at school before) and Mr. Hoffmann. I could not believe how nice they were to me! They were sooo friendly, gave me a Lake Forest sweater that actually fitted me (the Josephinum one was way too large), offered me cake, talked to me, showed me around in their house and immediately made me feel welcomed. I was just astonished. Mrs. Hoffmann showed me my room, which was on the first floor, and after I had unpacked my luggage a little bit, I went downstairs again with my laptop. Peter connected me to their WLAN network, and there we sat, chilling on the sofa and watching Criminal Intent. As it was already past 11 pm, I decided to go to bed.
Friday
My first morning with the Hoffmanns....and it was as great as the past evening had been! This day would be interesting anyway...there was a school dance party on schedule for the evening and Mrs. Hoffmann told me that a senior, Alexandra, would take me there...however.
Peter had already been gone when I woke up at 7 (his school starts early), and the first thing I did was having a shower. Also mentally awake, I went down to the kitchen, where Mr. Hoffmann was already waiting for me. He made me a smoothie, orange juice and something really cool: He took a slice of bread, cut a hole through it and made an egg sunny side up in it. It tasted so good and I was so happy when Mrs. Hoffmann came too and we then drove to school.
I entered the school and was like floating because of my happiness. I met some of the Austrians in the cafeteria and behaved like I was a little bit drunk: I smiled all the time, asked every single one how he was feeling and stuff...It was really nice.
However, the schoolday was also good. We had a mass where we sang an Austrian church song: Easter Hallelujah, „Dies ist der Tag“. Well, we were probably lucky that they did not understand the very creative text, but the Americans seemed to like it. Or they were just being polite. I don‘t know.
Aynway, when school was over at 3 pm, we were thinking about what to do. My Austrian colleagues planned to go to Highland Park to do some shopping, and I was wanting to go with them. So I called Peter and asked if he could pick me up, which he did. 10 minutes later, we were at home. As Alexandra was going to pick me up at 7 pm, I decided to stay at home and relax a little bit. Peter went to work, but Mrs. Hoffmann came home anyways. I decided to chill in the sofa and watch Die Hard 4.0. It was a good decision. I did not finish it, but it was nice to see that even watching it in English did not make a difference to me. Whatever, I had another shower and prepared myself for the evening. I was ready a few minutes before 7 and already thought I‘d be late, but it was no problem. Alexandra encountered the Kevin Chi Phenomenon and was a little late, which was of course no problem because I wasn‘t really ready either^^.
Well, after all, she came and also had some flowers for Mrs. Hoffmann, as it was her birthday the following day. I said goodbye to my ‚parents‘ and stepped out of the door only to stand still: Alexandra came in a Range Rover! It was her fathers and it was just great...I loved sitting in it. Anyway, we drove to a little bit and then changed the car as Katherine was driving me and 4 other seniors. We had dinner somewhere I forgot, but it was Asian and it was really good and really funny. After everyone was finished, we drove back to Woodlands to go to the dance. It seemed we were the last ones arriving as it was already quite crowded. It was really funny to be with everyone and after we had left the dance, we were driving around laughing and finally Alexandra drove me home around 0 am.
Saturday
This day, I slept quite a long time, and so I got up around 9:30. After I had had a shower and got dressed, Peter and I drove to town to have some breakfast. As Starbucks was highly overcrowded and none of us wanted to wait, we went over to Einsteins. I ate a Sandwich that could probably have been a dinner too, but it was really good. The coffee was American though. However, after having eaten, we went to Walgreens where I bought 5 packs of my favourite Orbit Mint Mojito Chewing Gum. I only have 3 strips anymore

After this little „shopping“, Peter showed me around in town: We drove to the beach and also visited a friend of his.
Now it was time to go home and get ready to go downtown: Shopping day!!! Mrs. Hoffmann drove Pete and me to the train station and so we were on our way (after 3 little brats were playing cool on their skateboards in the station and getting on our nerves). Peter showed me some places and told me about the different suburbs when we drove past them. Finally, we arrived in Chicago. It was a really beautiful day, the sun was shining and it was warm. We went to Sears Tower at first, but as there were many people, we took a cab to Michigan Avenue. Well, it was a shopping paradise. After having stopped at Eddie Bauer (Emils brother?), Brooks Brothers, the Apple Store, Levis and Burberry, we had the chance to look at something marvellous: In front of a hotel, there were standing 3 (!) Range Rovers, a Mercedes and a Porsche or an Audi. It was beautiful.
We had lunch at McDonalds and visited Starbucks for the second time that day. After that, we went to J.Crew and then back to Sears Tower to visit the Skydeck. Although we had to wait for quite a long time and had to watch a movie about it, it was really worth it. The view was exceptionnal and I was really stunned to see such a huge area covered by a city. Anyway, after we came down, we took a cab back to Michigan Avenue and went into a mall. Phoebe had came back this day from her exchange in California and we were going to meet her and Mr. and Mrs. Hoffmann in this mall. After we were reunited, we went to have a birthday-dinner at the French Brasserie Jo. It was really nice there, the food was excellent and I really enjoyed my time with the Hoffmanns.
After dinner, we did not go on the highway, but took Lakeshore Drive so I could see Lake Michigan and Chicago at night. It was sooooo beautiful! I couldn‘t believe my eyes! Then we drove through the suburbs, I could get a look at the huge Northwestern University.
Finally we came home, but Phoebe and I left a few minutes after as Mackie picked us up to have some ice cream with Bernadette and another girl. The ice was good, Bernadette spilled some water over the table which was fun too. I showed the Americans my super-absorbing Austrian Tempo tissues!
Mackie dropped Phoebe, Berns and me at Woodlands (Bernadette‘s a boarder) and after having waited a few minutes, Alexandra and the other seniors picked us up. We had another really funny driving moments until Phoebe and I finally got home and I went to bed quite soon afterwards.
Sunday
Sunday, a rest day. I got up around 10:30 and was alone for like half an hour, as Peter was working, Mrs. Hoffman went to church and Phoebe had a huge field-hockey day, where her father drove her. After Mrs. Hoffmann came back, I had breakfast which was awesome again! The plan for today was again shopping, and so Peter and I picked up Allen, a friend of him and drove of to Highland park to have lunch. We went to Chipotle, a Mexican restaurant. We all had Buritos, which we like really really good, but way too huge for me. I stopped eating halfway through. Anyway, I have to mention that it was a really warm day, so we put down the top of the Eos. After lunch, we went home for a few minutes to get some music for the drive onto our iPods, and then we went off to Wisconsin, to go shopping at an outlet mall. The ride on the highway was as funny as driving always is, and finally we arrived: Many stores, money to spend...it was perfect. After an hour or two, it was time to drive back, and on the way there, we stopped at another restaurant where Pete got some of „the best cheeseburgers in the area“. I didn‘t have one as Phoebe and I were going to have dinner together with Lauren, Rachel and Caro H. So we drove Allen home, picked up Phoebe and went off to Evanston. We drove at Peters and my favourite part of the highway: Car dealerships everywhere....Audi, Porsche, Mercedes.....heaven!
Anyway, we arrived at Flat Top Grill and met the 3 other girls. Dinner was great: There was a buffet where you put vegetables, noodles, the meat you wanted, sauces and other stuff into a plate and then you would give it to the grill where they would fry it for you. It tasted soooooo good!
After dinner, we went to an ice cream parlor and I got some coffee at Starbucks. Then, we went to Laurens and Rachels home as our train was going in an hour. They showed us around and finally we drove to the train station. At Highland Park, Phoebe and I got out and Peter and Mr. Hoffmann picked us up. When we got home, we had some dessert again and watched a little bit TV until I went to bed.
Monday
Well, school was ok, like always, After school, Alexandra took me to Jamba Juice in Highland Park. Jamba Juice is a restaurant chain that serves smoothies, and I really have to say: They are just fabulous! Alex took me home, and then Peter and I drove to Starbucks and he finally dropped me off at school, where I watched the soccer practice with Toni, Kevin O. and Lukas. After that, Mackie drove Phoebe and me home. Mrs. Hoffmann had cooked for us all and made Bratwurst. It really tasted like home!
We relaxed for a few minutes and then Peter and I went to the cinema to watch Leatherheads. The mall where the cinema was was nearly empty, it was so funny. We two where the only people sitting in the whole cinema. Home again, I chilled and went to sleep.
Tuesday
Well, I don‘t really remember the schoolday, but after school, Toni, Caro N. and I went with the Woodlands Soccer Team to watch their game. Unfortunately, the weather was really bad, and because of a thunder warning, we waited inside for 30 minutes. Well, the game eventually started but it was raining, windy and really cold. So after 15 minutes everyone was soaking wet. At least, our team won in the end. The bus took us back to Woodlands, where Phoebe and I waited for her dad to pick us up. When we entered the car, we were welcomed by the smeel of great deep-dish pizza. Dinner at home was great and the pizza really tasted excellent! Unfortunately, I did not really feel well as I got sick from the cold at the soccer game, so I went to bed quite early.
Wednesday
Sadly, I felt really bad in the morning, so I stayed at home and in bed and missed the trip to Chicago. Shit!
I slept until 11 am and then Alexandra picked me up from home. We had lunch together in Lake Forest and then went to school. I didn‘t have many lessons, but one of the few was Latin. It was really interesting to hear the American pronounciation^^
After school, I went to Starbucks with Lauren and Rachel and, when we were just parking in front of the Hoffmanns house, my home, we decided to go to Highland Park to meet Sherree, Alexandra and Phoebe. We got some sandwiches and then went to some cosmetics store, where I bought presents for home.
After Phoebe and I had returned home, we were getting ready for dinner. The Hoffmanns took me to a local American restaurant whose name I unfortunately forgot. It was really good American food and a lovely evening!
When we returned home, we had a strange but funny experience: For several weeks, Mrs. Hoffmann had heard animal noises coming from her chimney, and that was the day we finally decided to find out what it was. Originally, Peters and my idea was to either use a shotgun to silence the traitors or smoke them out. However, this plan was not accepted. We started a fire so that the animals may come out themselves, but it didn‘t work. Peter then did the dirty work: He put his (gloved) hands into the chimney and took a few „surveilance“ photos: It was something grey, and now we knew it were Racoons. Pete took them out one by one. After we took some pictures, we let them out and the following day, they were gone.
Thursday
My last day with the Hoffmanns!

In the morning, I went to Lake Forest High School with Peter. He attends this school in senior grade and I wanted to see a real American school. It was like in the cliché: 1800 students, a huge building, large hallways, demotivation...it was really interesting. For lunch, Pete, a friend of him and I drove to Chipotle again and it was again fabulous. The two dropped me of at Woodlands then. After school, Mrs. Hoffmann and Peter picked me up and then Peter and I went to the Range Rover dealership to have a look at the awesome cars. After that, we went to Woodlands to pick up Phoebe from her soccer practice. Peter drove home with her, but I waited for Alexandra to say goodbye as she was leaving for Texas on friday to visit her future college. She drove me home then and sadly, we had to say goodbye for the last time.
At home, we had a great steak for dinner and then Peter and I chilled the whole evening watching Blow.
Friday
omG! Our last day! This thought hung over us like a thick cloud the whole day! I got up and had to pack my things...I was really sad. I went to have breakfast the last time...drove to school the last time. I had to say goodbye to Mr. Hoffmann right in the morning as he went to Texas this day and so couldn‘t come to school the evening. Well, sadly, I left the Hoffmanns house and put up my luggage into the boarding house at school. We only had lessons until 12, when cultural odyssey started at school. We went to several classes, like French Desserts, Chinese Zodiac and Language and after that, the whole school together learned Indonesian Dances. It ended at 3 pm and then we had time to, well relax, be sad and prepare for the evening. At 5:30, we showed our „My Vienna, My Austria“ to the students, parents and teachers who came. It was such a great evening of friendship, when I think of it now I really get sad that it‘s over. Anyway, after our presentations, we had a last dinner at school together with our friends. Pictures were taken, and we were given such the beautiful Woodlands ties. Then it was time for our Waltzing class: We Austrians showed our friends and colleagues how to dance, and they did quite well!!!
After Waltz, we had dessert and spent the rest of the evening together, saying goodbye to everyone and being very sad.
Saturday
The mood was like at a funeral! We got up quite early to pack our things, which was not very easy as everyone bought loads of stuff. Anyway, Ridhima was the first one to wake us up. Little by little, everyone of the boarders woke up and we finally went down to have the last breakfast together. Another interesting experiences: The cook made our omelettes from eggs out of a carton pack!
However, time passed quickly. Really quickly, and so it was 11:45 am and time for our departure!!! Damn! Some people cried, but everyone was at least near tears when we hugged for the last time. I think this was the saddest moment we had ever experienced in our lives. As we were sitting in the bus, we tried hard to distract ourselves from being totally down. At the airport, we had another 2 hours, where we stayed in the food court. Kevin O. managed to eat 2 McDonalds meals and some ice cream. Wow!
After some Duty Free shopping, we went through security, waited for our flight and finally, after 2 awesome, wonderful, great and touching weeks, we left America.
This was the first part of my America reflection. The second one will follow soon.
