Toshiba announced today its new Gigabeat U series of low-capacity flash DAPs. At first glance, the 1GB U101 ($118) and 2GB U201 ($144) look pretty ordinary. But beneath the 96 x 96 OLED display and inside the 3" x 1.4" x 0.4" casing are actually some refreshingly unique features.

The most notable, from what we can gather from the translated press release, is some sort of high sound quality conversion technology that's never been used before. Exactly what the digital audio processor does and how it does it isn't terribly clear, but the bottomline is that Toshiba is pretty pleased with the U series' output. The players are also equipped with "direct sound recording functions" and FM transmitter capabilities that seem to enable person-to-person sharing. Battery life is rated at 20 hours on a full charge and 3 hours on a 10-minute rapid charge.

The Japan-bound U series will be available in white beginning on March 28, with orange and blue (for U101 only) models to follow on April 7.

A supplement that has been well-documented in Europe for reversing age-related dementia and memory loss is phosphatidylserine (PS), a compound made by the body from the amino acid serine. Taken in supplement form, PS lowers stress response and promotes the release of neurotransmitters in the brain that facilitate thought, reasoning, and concentration.

Dass ein Handy ursprünglich nur einen Zweck zu erfüllen hatte, kann man sich heute gar nicht mehr vorstellen. Denn aus dem Gebrauchsgegenstand, der mehr als telefonieren nicht leisten konnte und musste, ist inzwischen ein wahres Multimedia-Hightech-Gerät geworden, das für manche sogar den Rechner und den Weg ins Büro ersparen kann. Für junge Leute liegt der Fokus oft anderswo - sie wollen, dass man mit dem Handy Bilder und Clips aufnehmen kann und zum Zeitvertreib eine Runde zocken. Samsung hat dafür den perfekten Begleiter: das SCH-B550.

Denn dieses Handy erfüllt nicht nur drei, sondern gleich vier Wünsche auf einmal: Handy, Kamera, TV und Spielkonsole! Tatsächlich sieht das Handy eher aus wie ein Zwitter aus Playstation Portable und überdimensionalem Mobiltelefon, aber dieser Look ist zum einen sicher gewollt und zum anderen auch notwendig. Mit seinen 113,5×50,5×21,8 mm ist das Gerät nicht gerade zierlich wobei das Gewicht von 128 Gramm noch durchaus als verträglich eingestuft werden kann, bedenkt man, was alles unter dem Gehäuse steckt.

Da wäre die 2 Megapixelkamera, ein MP3-Player mit Equalizer und für den drahtlosen Musikgenuss und schnellen Datentransfer ein A2DP-Bluetooth-Profil. Für Geräte aus Korea eigentlich schon fast Standard aber das SCH-B550 kann eben noch mehr: es hat einen DMB-TV-Tuner mit Video-Out und einen 3D-Grafikprozessor, damit das Spielen auch den Spaß bereitet, den das Gerät mit seinem Äußeren vermittelt.

Die klassischen Gaming-Buttons auf der rechten Seite zeigen deutlich auf, dass mit dem B550 telefonieren eigentlich Nebensache ist. Deswegen sind die normalen Zifferntasten wohl auch unter dem 2,3 Zoll großen und 262.144 Farben darstellenden LCD-Screen versteckt worden. Durch sanftes schräg nach oben Gleiten werden diese allerdings freigelegt. Der Bildschirm kann natürlich sowohl horizontal, als auch vertikal eingesetzt werden, je nachdem, was der User gerade besser braucht: zum Fernsehen und Gamen eignet sich eher das breite Bild, für SMS oder surfen im Netz dann hochkant. Wer alles gleichzeitig erledigen möchte - kein Problem, denn das SCH-B550 ist Multitasking-fähig was soviel bedeutet, dass man zeitgleich SMS tippen und fernsehen oder Musik hören kann.

Welche Art Akku Samsung diesem Gerät eingepflanzt hat ist leider nicht bekannt, wäre aber sehr interessant, denn mit so viel technischem Klimbim und zusätzlich auch noch einem 3D-Grafikprozessor ist viel Saft gefragt, damit man nicht alle Nase lang an die Steckdose muss. Aber diese Frage stellt sich uns hierzulande mal wieder nicht: das SCH-B550 ist nur für Korea geplant und es sieht nicht danach aus, dass es den Sprung nach Europa schaffen wird. Schade, wo Nokias N-Gage inzwischen wirklich komplett in der Versenkung verschwunden ist…
