Ask Google Translate to support ODF

So a few days back I sent this email to the OOoES community in support for the ODF file format to support it on the Google translate upload feature. The upload features allow the user to translsate documents as opposed to URLs or chunck of texts. Adding support for ODF will allow the users to have larger pieces of text translated and also be able to be more productive.

To let the Google translate team know, they have a form up on their Help files for suggesting features. I will encourage the users to remind them that is a good idea to have support for ODF because is an open standard for docuemnts and that many governments and companies around the world are currently migrating to and also that there are many tools already avialable to provide that support like ODFpy and ODFToolkit.

Here is the form to fill out.

The FLOSS BLOG

, , ,

So I just got an idea recently on getting in this web 2.0 waggon about making a web floss platform. A social network devoted to floss and linux desktop user. ThE platform will bridge to your gnome or kde desktop and enable them to the networkability of a social network.

OOoCon2007 - The MarCon meeting

The NLC meeting was followed by the MarCons or Marketing Contact meetings and a lot of good rant was being handled on this meeting.

We started the meeting by introducing ourselves and giving a brief summary on the success and failures this year marketing wise for our local area. Italy was one of the most vivid success stories as they had been focused more on a more successful PR campaign getting the Marketing manager from Microsoft fired for the outperformed OOo camp.

OOo in italy has become successful with the media reporting good artucles pro-OOo.

Brasil had some interesting success stories with Banco do Sour, however comenting on that was a bit slow since I think claudio didn’t had a structured case.

Finally there was myself giving a whole list of ‘challenges’ for communicating the OOo brand to all the different countries in Latin America as well as Spain.

Recruiting new members from other successful open source project like FLISOL which has become very successful reaching into the latin american market. And OOo can leverage on this projects.

Also the No OOXML was the big elephant in the room and was definetly the biggest thing going on worldwide.

We talked a lot about momentum and development opportunity, messaging oportunity as well as a big chance to make a big precence in the Web 2.0 era.

OOoCon2007 - The NLC roundtable

NLC grew less in quantity but more in quality of the communities. This mean there was less new communities being form. But more communities reaching level 2 status.

Also the localization process experience a high level of interaction this year with a broader number of NLCs and also a bigger platform on deciding which tool to move forward.

This topic really got the discussion started with the german community picking up the meeting with some issues regarding the glossary, pootle and the transcoding scripts (po2oo).

Brasil also had concerns with the use of a centralized pootle vs a distributed one since they use a dedicated pootle to just not translate OOo but also other things like Firefox.

Other issue was the Vasque situation where the translation was pretty much handled by the government and acceptance of external contributors was pretty much a no go as a policy. So working on a centralized pootle with leave them away from the process.

The meeting move on with some contributions and comments ffrom myself (and the Spanish community). Specially on the point of constant mentoring so we can get the full knowledge of using this tools. This being particularly important since the new process for translating 2.4 will start by the end of the month.

The file format was also a big discussion as PO was debated vs XLIFF and SDF and the very demanded TMX for Omega-T. XLIFF is also being pushed as an OASIS standard.

We moved on to other topics such as the use of the wiki as well as guidelines for using categories and sub-folders or namespaces.

I made a small proposal on modifiying the wiki so that it looks more like the Collabnet pages. This message moved us on to Collabnet and their infrastructure to protect the security of the project versus the flexibily and hassles to create a more localized NLC project homepage.

In the end there was not enough time to air all our pains but there was a lot of points being made and a lot of good things too.

OOoCon2007 - Day 0

, , , ...

It’s the middle of the night here in Barcelona and before further waiting for day 1 (2nd day of my stance). I had to blog something.

Today was a busy day no doubt with many old faces back again in the mix while some old nicks just got new faces. These never seems to stop amazing me on these kind of events.

So let’s get started, first of all let’s start with the meetings. The meeting started pretty laid back with people joining the room gradually until the room was full. Once we got going people were a bit shy to talk. Charles and Rafaella did most of the talking at the beginning giving a status as NLC and 10ln did in the past year.

The NLC meeting was followed by the MarCons or Marketing Contact meetings and a lot of good ammount of rants were produced on this meeting. Finally the NLC party was a very good and important event for all of us where we got the chance to eat some good real food and interact with many people of the community. I finally got the chance to meet long time OOoES community members such as Ismael Fanlo and Falcaraz which are very active in the community.

I also talked with Rafaella Braconi and other developers such as Rob Weir and Leif Lodahi were very helpful to talk about the different issues involving OOXML and it’s implementation.

After the NLC party we both went on to a pub which was quite fun and I have the chance to talk more with other community members as well as the Kiberpipa guys. We talk about business in FLOSS and how to achieve it around OOo. I gave many examples including having an environment where we can make a stronger point on migrating OOo by covering it with more tools like, a student / teacher book and also a better strategy than just pointing them out to the website.

I had to leave early since I needed to get back to the hotel before it was too late for my train to depart. I left at 10:15 which was enough time since it seems trains run until midnight. I finally got home and got enough time to prepare for tomorrow.
