"Midnight on the Firing Line" (season 1, ep. 1)

And now we enter season 1 proper. I gotta say, for all its other shortcomings, this season has a unique athmosphere compared to both later seasons and the pilot. It’s something to do with the music and lights, I think. Feels relaxing in a way.
Anyhow, this is the first episode, and quite a good one at that. Highlights include:
• First impression: Holy hell, that’s some static CGI! They didn’t blow the rendering budget on this one.
• Second impression: I like that they introduced Babylon 5 with subtitles, as if we’ve never seen it before. Almost wish they’d do that more often. Not sure why. Perhaps because it has a videogame-y feel to it, in the way that whenever you go somewhere you see the name of the place. Also, knowing the date for the start of every episode would have been nice.
• Vir should see a dentist immediately. How can he eat with those fangs? Apparently, they shrunk later on, like his coat.
• And there’s young, inexperienced Ivanova. You really notice (when you’ve seen the whole series before) how much this character grows throughout the seasons.
• Ivanova’s comment about the vice president always makes me chuckle. Also, this scene makes me wonder what would have happened if Marie Crane had won.
• “G’Kar!” That scene reminds me of the blooper reel, where Vir does a parody of Londo’s exclamation: “G’Kar!” Priceless. The season 1 bloopers are worth a watch, and can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Dh5nbwmLko (Vir’s comment at 02:22. Also, Lennier’s Beatlemania comment... xD)
• I like that the Narn/Centauri conflict comes more to the surface here. Makes G’Kar’s motivations more clear, rather than just being a random evildoer. It also serves to make Londo more than just a comic relief character. Worry not, though, Delenn steps in to perform that role in this episode – much like Londo, her misconceptions of Earth culture are an endless source of fun. ^^
• What was Kosh doing behind that screen? Please, let it be a bathtub.
• I must say Garibaldi handled Londo in a masterful way. Takes one to know one, I guess.
• Yeah, this show is old, but still… What’s with the terrible 80’s music in the casino?
• In the pilot, I always wondered about Lyta fearing to be thrown out of the Corps (I mean, they mostly try to keep people in the Corps), but if the alternatives were prison or drugs, then I guess this episode actually explains it.
