Good Coffee is so Hard to Find

,

If anyone has been following this blog for a long time, you will know that I have a MASSIVE love affair with coffee.

I LIKE coffee. A lot. I drink it every day.

I have discovered that most people do not like coffee. They drink it, but they don't like coffee. They add sweetener and creamer or (gag) flavored creamer, which is the worst. What people like is Hazelnut flavored Creamer with a little coffee flavor added.

Try this: Drink your coffee black to find out if you like it.

I have complained about the coffee at work time and time again because it has to be the most terrible coffee ever made. I work at a CULINARY school, so how can that be? Apparently they teach students to make good food, not good coffee. I complained to one of the chefs about the coffee and told him that I never drank the coffee at the school because it closely resembled mud in taste and texture. He said he thought it tasted pretty good. I must have given him a look of total incredulity. In a moment of inspiration, I asked him what he put in it and he told me he loads it up with sugar and Half and Half.
I told him he wasn't drinking coffee, at all, if he had to put all the extras in to be able to swallow it.

A few days later he stopped me in the corridor at the school. "You were right. I don't like coffee," he announced.

Me: I hope you weren't using the school's coffee as your standard.
Chef: Well, yes.
Me: I told you already it is terrible coffee.
Chef: Oh, so you did.
Me: You may like it if you get a decent cup.
Chef: Where would that be?

He carried a cup full of creamer and sugar in his hand and I suggested he pour it out. I had my travel mug with me, so I poured a bit of my coffee into his cup and he raised the cup to his lips. The smile that followed told me it I was correct in my assessment. The coffee at the school is generally terrible.

Chef: So, what is the secret?
Me: I grind my own beans in the morning. I don't use distilled water or anything special. I use a counter-top coffee maker. Sometimes, I use a French press, because that is the best cup. I like the French press when I am having an afternoon coffee.
Chef: OK. Sounds easy enough.

I watched as he went over to the coffee pot and filled his cup with the mud, sugar and cream.

Me: I thought you said you like good coffee.
Chef: I do, but until we get good coffee here at the school, I will drink my cup of cream and sugar with a little coffee flavoring added in for fun.

I like coffee. I make Turkish coffee in the morning. Does it count that I put a splash of milk in it? (no sugar!) It's very smooth.

Of course, San. I put milk in my espresso, too. coffee

I drink coffee black, brown, caramel or white colored! I am NOT prejudiced!

I want to like coffee.
I've tried.
I used to drink it black and cringe.
I like the aroma of it.
Love the aroma of it.
I've done the creamer, sugar thing.
I drink decaf if I drink it at all.
Can I say I'm not a grown up if I don't drink coffee?
*kind of hoping the answer is "yes"*

We do agree on this CoFFee issue
I have been said to have an addiction to CoFFee
Fact is I love my strong, black, no sugar CoFFee
It's lovely to have my CoFFee in nature

As long as it has caffeine I'm happy... until I go into a 'coffee shop' and am confronted by a bizarre menu where the one item missing is 'coffee' (plain and simple).

I think coffee is good when there is that lovely foam on the top, only made with a French press, or by an espresso maker or a Turkish coffee pot.

The first time I ever loved coffee is when I went to Quebec. I couldn't order a regular coffee like I was used to so I ordered a cafe creme. It's like a very long espresso or an americano, and you can add a bit of cream to it afterwards. So smooth!

@Werner: I don;t have to have coffee in nature to find it lovely. My coffee is lovely anywhere. smile

@Words:

I know what you mean. At times like that, you have to pull the girl behind the counter aside and ask from just-plain-coffee... quietly and discreetly, of course. They still sell it, but they don't promote it. At least over here.

Girl behind the counter: You want what?
Me: Coffee. Just coffee.
Girl: You mean an Espresso?
Me: Coffee.
Girl: Oh. Coffee. Do you want me to leave room for cream and sugar?
Me: No. I want a cup of coffee. Full to the top. Coffee. No additives. Just coffee.
Girl: This is a most unusual request.
Me: You know what? Forget it. I will go to your competitor and see if I can get just a plain cup of coffee. One without double hazelnut vanilla caramel with lowfat milk, extra whip cream, cinnamon and chocolate sprinkled on top. That's not coffee. That's a RECIPE!

@San:

I love the foamy stuff on the top of coffee made in a French Press. You can't get that with a counter-top coffee maker.

I'm meeting a friend at a coffee shop today. Love your comment about ordering a plain coffee. The menu does overwhelm me. Especially when I'd rather drink an ice water than a hot cuppa coffee. To each his/her own.
