The Whole World as a Village of 100 People

Tom Geddie wrote an article about Corporate Cultures titled Moving Communication Across Cultures that was published in Communication World, Apr/May99, Vol. 16 Issue 5, p37. In this article, he stated "If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would like this:"

There would be

57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 From the Western Hemisphere (north and south)
8 Africans
52 would be female
48 would be male
70 would be non-white, 30 white
70 would be non-Christian, 30 would be Christian
89 would be heterosexual, 11 homosexual
59 % of the entire world's wealth would be in the hands of only 6 people and all 6 would be citizens of the United States
80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would be near death
1 would be near birth
1 would have a college education
1 would own a computer

I don't know about you, but this certainly put things in perpective for me.

They Never Grow UpIf this ever happens to you...

Of the six wealthiest people in the world (all Americans) only one could have a college education and only one could own a computer. I assume the other 4 or 5 are dope dealers.

Hi K4 (Greetings from Spain),
Yes, looking at it in the context you describe it does ´focus the mind´.
Whenever I travel I always see the ´contrast´ between the things I perceive, in my own town, my own country, my own environment, so to say, and those other things in the ´foreign´ place in which I find myself. The contrasts range from similar to disimilar, depending on how far (or where) I travel.

That is not a judgment of other cultures or indeed a lauding of my own. It is a perception (not the whole truth, for one must live in such areas, sharing the culture, to understand more about the ´why´ and the ´how´of things) and like all perceptions should be ´mentally sieved´ for greater clarity. Sadly, we often see only the surface of such ´differences´and even then some of us see only what we want to see.

Thank you. K4, for raising an important topic, stimulating my response.
Love & best wishes.

Hello my friends,

When I read the article, I realized that maybe the world isn't quite as I pictured it.

Welcome to my blog, Sabrina and Sagar.

Hello to Elke and Lokutus.

Love,

Good post indeed... But with only 1 computer it could be the end of blogging wink

Very good point... I think our village should have at least 200 people... or maybe one of the wealthiest would buy a second computer for someone else.

Oh my gosh! My village is too small!
