Several Things You Need To Have To Make Your House A Safer Place

, , ,

You don't have to spend a fortune to insure the safety of your family and home.

Here's a list of several things that are effective at boosting your security and safety, but are also quite inexpensive. You don't have to install a whole home security system. Those systems can be prohibitively expensive.

Start with alarms. The first thing to remember is that someone who is trying to break in is trying to sneak. Don't let them. You can get a door alarm that is small and unobtrusive, and that runs on cell batteries, for right around $20. Once your alarm is armed for the evening, if the door is opened you'll know it - the alarm will emit a loud, shrill noise.

Good locks. You can get deadbolts and other locks for both doors and windows. If you have a flimsy lock, there is no reason not to back it up with a better model. If the bolt is solid in your chosen bolt lock, you are good to go.

For sliding doors, you need to see if you have an anti-lift device installed. If you don't yet have one, get one installed. An alternative is to have two door locks installed, one at the top and one at the bottom of the sliding door. This reinforces the simple hook lock that is standard on sliding glass doors.

Shine the light. Your average burglar or home invader does not want to be seen going into your home or property. If you have lights on the back door, garage, and porch, this helps keep you a lot safer. You can spend a bit up front and get dusk-to-dawn lighting. Consider photoelectric cells for this because they are less expensive to run.

If those lights are too expensive, consider investing in a flood light that collects sunlight during the day and then uses this energy at night to illuminate your yard.

Thorny is good. If you are trying to boost security but don't have a perimeter wall or fence, you can use thorny plants and shrubs for this purpose. Thorny plants under windows can be helpful also.

You can do this with plants like roses, holly, and hawthorn. These have thorns on their stems and are very sharp. This is a great deterrent, they puncture skin easily and that is very painful. Plus, even when they aren't actively chasing away would-be burglars, these plants are very attractive in your yard.
