Welcome!

Greetings,

As you may know, I've created quite a few logo and picture files to be used with Strat-O-Matic Baseball. Visitors who play other simulations are welcome to download anything they find interesting. The Strat-O-Matic community has certainly benefited from the generosity of other game communities. I am delighted if this site provides a way to reciprocate.

I have an interest in baseball cards. For that reason, my picture/alias files will emphasize the baseball cards available in a given year. My first year of collecting cards was 1961. (I sold them to my mother about 5 years later and she burned them. Who knew?) The picture/alias file for 1961 will emphasize cards that were available in 1961. For this reason, I'll tend to look back to find cards of players for a season. If I can't find a card by looking through previous years, then I'll look for the earliest available card.

I will take some liberties in reworking cards. For example, if/when I do the 1960 season, the cards for that season were printed with a horizontal format. I'll reformat the cards without distorting the primary photograph, enabling them to work with the vertical format used by the game.

Best wishes . . . and enjoy!

Ken Wenger

Integrated Leagues

This is baseball as it might have been--indeed should have been. The Negro League All-Stars are placed on the major league teams for which they might have appeared. I appreciate that the Strat-O-Matic Game Company has granted permission for me to make these seasons available to you.

The process used to create the teams was as follows.
1. The Negro League players who were active during a particular season were placed in the free agent pool. The seasons for each player are given in the Guide Book that accompanies the Negro League All-Stars.
2. The Draft-O-Matic feature was used to select which team would receive a particular player. The draft was done in reverse order of the teams' won/loss records. This means that the teams with worse records in that season received the highest picks.
3. The teams were restricted in terms of which players they could draft. When the Negro League set was released, Glenn Guzzo wrote an article featuring a chart showing the most likely major league teams on which the Negro League players might have played. Scott Simkus chose one American League and one National League city as the likely destination for each player. The teams could only draft the players who were likely to have played on that team. You might expect that this would distribute the talent across the league, but this is generally not the case. The players usually are assigned to a city associated with their careers in the Negro Leagues. New York, Chicago, and St. Louis, for example, receive more than their fair share of the players; Boston receives none.
4. The lineups were generated automatically. There were a few cases in which a Negro League All-Star was unable to crack the starting lineup for the team in one league, but was able to do so for the team in the other league. In such cases, the player was assigned to the suggested team in the other league.

IT MUST BE EMPHASIZED THAT IN ORDER TO USE THESE LEAGUES, YOU MUST OWN THE AUTHORIZATION FOR THE PARTICULAR SEASON AND FOR THE NEGRO LEAGUE SET. For example, in order to play with the 1911 season, you must own the authorization for the 1911 season and the Negro League set.

Check back because I'll add additional seasons in the future.

1911 Integrated Season.zip

1920 Integrated Season.zip

1924 Integrated Season.zip

Follow the steps below in order to use the leagues.
1. Download the file(s).
2. Unzip the file(s).
3. Copy the files (Control-C).
4. Open CDROMBB/ROSTERS and paste (Control-V) the files into that folder.

You might have to close the game and then reopen it before you will be able to use these leagues. There should be an American League Integrated season and a National League Integrated season for each league that you download.

I'm not planning on doing a picture pack for any of these seasons. If you download the photo pack that I've already done for the season and the photo pack for the Negro League All-Stars, then you should have everything you need for these seasons. Since adding the Negro League All-Stars represents a major change to how the season was actually played, there are no as-played options for the seasons. I think the schedule, however, is the as-played schedule--some people might have preferred a different schedule.

A bit more about me

I am a Christian. Over the last few weeks--and particularly going through the Easter season--I've been thinking quite a bit about my faith and why I believe what I do. I've expressed my thoughts in the document below.
Why_I_am_a_Christian.doc

I thank any of you who take the time to read it. I realize this is a departure from the strictly baseball content that you are accustomed to seeing on my site. At this point, I have no idea whether I'll add more on this topic.

Dan's Logos--1970 to present

Dan has created some very attractive team logos for approximately 1970 to the present.

Transogram pictures

These pictures are provided courtesy of Tom N. He writes, "When I was a kid in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, Transogram produced a baseball statue with a player card. There was a 60 player set in 1969 and then they did a Mets set and some 1970 cards too. I have been on Ebay and other sources and I found as many as I could."

I've posted the pictures because they may bring pack some memories for those who collected the statues.

Hall of Fame, Negro League, and Heroes--Pictures to accompany Strat-O-Matic's special baseball releases

These sets feature pictures which are all in the same format for use with the Strat-O-Matic's special sets. Color pictures have been used wherever possible. Ken Z deserves a lot of credit for the many colorizations that were done specifically for this set. His work on finding the pictures and doing the colorizations has been amazing.

There is also a spreadsheet containing information about year of birth, year of debut, teams on which played, etc. for the players in all three sets. Obviously the ability to sort data in a spreadsheet should be helpful for persons trying to create a league utilizing the players from all three sets.

Each set contains an alias file. The lines from the alias file must be copied into your existing alis file in order for the pictures to work within the game.

Spreadsheet of Data for the Hall of Fame, Negro League, and Heroes set--uploaded 2-11-11
I've created a spreadsheet containing a tremendous amount of data about the Hall of Fame, Negro League, and Hero players. Special thanks are due to Scott Simkus, Rob Ratliff, and Glenn Guzzo for their suggestions and help with some of the data. The obvious advantage to having a spreadsheet is the ability to sort the data in order to create teams. For example, the data can be sorted by year of birth, city of birth, debut year, best season, etc. The teams for which a man played are listed, so it is easy to determine all of the players who played for the Dodgers or any other franchise. The fielding ratings also are included. This will enable you to make sure that all positions are covered adequately for all of the teams. I've also added "phantom positions." Some players appeared in quite a few games at positions for which they are not rated. The letters w, x, y, and z indicate positions at which a player appeared in at least 200, 100, 50, and 10 games, respectively.

Best Shots of Superstars

I'm adding a new set of pictures. They are the best shots that I could find of some of baseball's greatest players and I'll try to find a pictures that represent the player during his best season. This is going to be an ongoing work, so more pictures will be added as I find them. I'm going to maximize the use of color pictures in this set. There may eventually be a few lines that you'll need to add to your alias file in order to have all of the pictures appear within the game. There are some players who spent a significant portion of their time with two or more teams--I'll try to include a couple of different pictures for such players.

Almost all of these pictures have been found on the Internet or were sent to me by Tony (also the source for some of the better pictures found on the Internet).

Jonathan's Face Packs

Jonathan K. has created a face pack for 1993. Unfortunately, the file for this set has become corrupted. If Jonathan sees this message and still has the set, I'll be happy to upload it if he will be kind enough to send it to me. In the meantime, I've created my own photo set for 1993. It is available at:

This set also supports the 1915 Cuban and Negro League players for the Shack's 1915 Liga Gerneral set.

Negro Leagues--updated 5/17/2012--This set includes the players featured in the Negro League set. Also included are any players that I could find from Fred Bobberts' 1930 Negro National League, in addition to the teams created by Len Durrant. Let's give a special tip of the hat to Ken Z--he found most of the pictures used for the colorizations and then did an amazing job with the colorizations.
More players will be added as I find the pictures.
Note--If a picture is not showing as it should, check whether there is an unnecessary space at the end of the player's name on the roster. Also, some of these players have the same name as a player on an existing roster--you will need lines in the alias file to have these pictures display.

If you are using the Negro League set from Strat-O-Matic Game Company, you should add the following lines to your alias file.

Logos

The nineteenth century logos are more generic. I had to use some liberties in developing them. Be assured, however, that there was some research and reason behind each of the logos. In some cases, it is the writing that appeared on the team's uniform as seen on period pictures or baseball cards.
