Enter Umibe-Project smile

So, what's Umibe?

Umibe was original a video transcoder, started in late November 2008, conceived to set a middle ground between MeGui and AniX264.

While I wanted the easy drag and drop and batch processing that AniX264 provided, I also wanted to be able to tweak the most advanced options in each tool I use, including AviSynth scripts.

The initial set of features I wanted to support were:
  1. AviSynth script generation
  2. Any input to MKV-X264-AAC
  3. Distributed queue on lan
  4. Folder monitoring
  5. Profiles

The project quickly grew due to personal interest and ended up with today's not-so-clean framework-like tool which can be mostly tuned with a few XML files. Lot's of features were added, like keeping chapter information, the ability to keep original audio track, priority based queue, etc.

The biggest issue right now is that both CLI and GUI were put together ad-hoc, not really minding the preferences of users other than me. Yeah, quite selfish.

Anyway, that was the just the transcoder.

Recently I got hooked on the idea of having an automatic sorter of my video files. I mean, why do it by hand when a computer can do it for you? That's how the second part of Umibe was born. A simple project really, the idea was to have Umibe's folder monitoring applying rules to files it detected. Those rules are triggered with a regular expression (say ".*mkv") and have an action coupled with it, which moves the file to target folder or to an automatically generated location.

Having already written a simple regex action-reaction core, the next step was to do a generic broadcatcher, not just for Bittorrent, but for HTTP, BT, EDK, or whatever. The idea is to be able to work with whatever external program that provides a CLI interface to add files (like FDM).

And that's mostly it. The original "Umibe" (the video transcoder) is now refered as umibe-transcoder, while the other 2 projects are called "umibe-RegexMatching" and "umibe-FeedActionizer". The last two are the lamest names I could think of and are subject to change smile.

The project is currently hosted at http://code.google.com/p/umibe/ and screenshots of a kind of old version of the transcoder project can be seen at http://picasaweb.google.com/joaquinpf/Screenshots#
