I am gonna do that!

New poor PB

Today, we had test run on 400 m outdoor athletic track, to know how we stand after rest period (at point zero). I didn't expected good time and my expectation was correct  .We ran just 3 runners (Števo, Adam and me). At the beginning I followed Štefan, but after first km lap I felt that it is possible to run faster than 3:29/km and took the lead. From that moment, it was individual race for me and in my opinion time 17:06 correctly describes my current track speed. It is sad but I never ran faster :D (my previous best time from April 2008 was 17:07,7, no more attempts after that...). But winter is long and offers time to improve before next season. My goal is 16:45 in spring time.
Test analyze is available HERE .
Train HARD!!!

Definitely not WOC which I expected...

Big expectations bring big disappointment. If you try to prepare and focus on something more than ever before , responsibility makes you weak and stressed. Best way is to take everything easy and relax
Thats what I learned from this years WOC. My expectations before nearly home WOC were higher than reality.
16th place in middle Q, catastrophic performance in relay and weak running shape in all races - facts better to remember (but before that take some lesson from it).

Only race which made me bit satisfied was Long final near Slovak borders. I miss just 115 seconds together, but terrain was much easier than I expected and with my poor running shape it was enough just for 35th place... Nowadays nearly nobody from elite runners miss in white forest with good visibility.

MAP LONG F (routes of world champion Daniel Hubmann, 14 minutes faster than me, in background)

I would like to say big THANK YOU!!! to all supporters and friends who created in Hungary nearly home atmosphere.

I will try to repay it by good results in future  ,because failure is the way to improvement!!!

Finally one good news: ATU Košice in cooperation with Slovak orienteering federation will organize JWOC 2012!!! I hope that all young Slovak o-hopes will have big motivation in next three years to train hard and succeed on home ground.

Italian adventure

Last year, my friend Mazo asked me, if I don't want to join his club Rapid Bratislava and take part at ITA5 09 in Dolomites connected with JWOC. I said YES, with big expectations  .Unluckily Mazo can not run at the moment, and was replaced by my ATU team mate Adam. I am sure, that he we also remember these 11 days for always...
Our base camp was in lovely village Siror, straight under mountains. In first days, we explored nice Italian mountains. Most interesting was trip to snow plateau 2700 m. above sea level. Some highlight from that day: memories of war

Fradusta glacier lake

snow running

dry river running ( I used these skills in 3rd and 5th stage p: )

and finally wet river running (canyoning)

After three days of hiking competitions began. Shape was not perfect, legs were tired, but it was not important at the moment. These who needed shape were juniors.

What I hate about north Italy ,is fact that there is nearly no single flat place, just steep slopes. I felt it hard on the way to the start of 1st stage of ITA 5.I wondered why organizers recommend 55 minutes on 3,5 km long way to the start. I used just 25 and got there really tired few beeps before my start. After few controls I understood that today's race is over and continued in training speed towards finish. So no more chances for good overall result in ME with 20 minute lost after first stage...
In the afternoon we enjoyed thrilling sprint race in Mezzano which looked bit like Swedish-Swiss champs

Next days Passo Rolle was big challenge. Orienteering in 2000 m. altitude is untypical experience.
At first as a warm-up we climbed hill on the picture (it is not photomontage :D):

and discovered trenches and caves from First World War.

But afterward, bit easy elite course and unstable weather ruined my expectations of highlight day...
Next day was ,,rest day,, , but according slogan: NO REST FOR THE RUNNERS, we ignored it and made top hiking of the week. At first we get under Cima Rosseta by cabin lift. Hill was full of JWOC participants, so we better continued towards our goal: Cimon della Pala (3184 m.). Near the top we met Francois Gonon and his Girlfriend.

Hero of the day was Milan who made whole trip just in sandals.

Afterward he concluded, that it was not good idea...

Next two days we spent in San Martino di Castroza, place of JWOC middle qualification and final. It was also my coaching premiere  Boys made their best, but few mistakes split them from better results.
4th stage of public event is worth mentioning: terrain of JWOC middle final brought one of this years o-highlights. I made a good race besides 7th control, where I lost 2 minutes.

On Saturday, last ITA5 stage and JWOC relay was held in Val Canali valley, organized in spectator-friendly concept with 2 spectator controls.

And after closing ceremony , extra stage of the week ,JWOC party completed successful week :D .
All maps from competitions, hikings and trainings are on my new MAP PAGE
More photos from Italy HERE .
And big THANK YOU!!! to all Rapid members who helped all the time.

Blog status: ALIVE!!!

After long silence, I am back. Demanding school year, a lot of trainings , Facebook :D - just few reasons of my disappearance from opera pages. But now after successful end of school year, I would like to write here regularly again . It is hard to explain everything what happened from my last post, so lets forgot about it and start from last week, when I take another step towards my seasons goal- WOC in Hungary. I took part at Hungarian middle and relay champs near Tatabanya. Terrain of qualification and relay was quite boring, but middle final course was really interesting.
I made good race, just with few small mistakes and finished 2nd, 1:40 behind Adam Kovacs, who was really strong on home ground ,like always.

Whole maps with Garmin FR 405(my new training partner :D) routes are available here:
MIDDLE Q
MIDDLE F
Last day, we ran relay competition. My DTC team mates Attila and Péter made great job on first two legs, so I started as a first, but just 8 seconds before yesterdays winner Adam. In first part we ran together, but in first steep hill I couldn't follow Adams tempo and lost contact with him. But soon I saw him again near control NR. 7, which was in my opinion not correct (also uncorrected GPS route shows, that it was set some 100 m east of its position on map).We lost there together some 2 more minutes, till we found it :frown:...

Next few controls we had absolutely different forking , but often we crossed our routes, so I knew that I am still in the touch...
At the spectator control, Adam had some 40 seconds lead, but two controls later I saw him again.

Unluckily than I made some small mistake(20 seconds) and also had longer last forking, so there was no chance to fight for first place...
This time ETC team was better, but next time we will try to reach the TOP again  .

And at last, photo of my teammates Pišta and Ivka with funny Hungarian beer lover :D :D :D

Friday the 13th - hardest training day ever

Season is coming soon, so its necessary to practice as much as possible with map. That was main goal of 3 days long training camp in Silica. Similarity with WOC terrains made each session yet more profitable for me, so I tried to train as much as possible. On Friday I made ,,French experiment,,(test your limits :D) and I am satisfied with this new experience.First session was 100 minutes long course with start on Soroška and finish in Silica. I felt very well through whole session, despite few cm of fresh snow. Second training was set in bit bushy semi-open part of plateau and lasted some 60 minutes (plus some 15 minutes of jogging). In second part of course I started to feel pain over my left knee and it was worse and worse. I don t know reason till now.I remember no accident with my knee, probably it was just because of too much running in terrain. After training, when we walked with Adam downhill to dinner, we looked both like robots :D. I was unsure if it is good idea to run one more night session or not, but finally I decided to try it.Indeed, what does not kill you, makes you stronger! So I went to wild forest and enjoyed 75 minutes of night running (sometimes also creeping under dark green vegetation ). Unluckily I kicked with my right knee to fallen tree and after training I had problems to move. I was unsure and angry because it was just first day of TC, but on other side satisfied with 260 minutes of physical activity . At the beginning of night,I had problems to sleep because of pain in both knees, but I was really shocked ,when I woke up next day and felt nearly no pain! On Saturday and Sunday we trained just twice a day, but with more intensity and focus on middle distance.

I also tried to spare some time for my friends...

On Sundays control race I was pleased, how strong I felt after previous sessions. But there is still a lot of work to do, before getting to the ideal shape. Hope , I am gonna do that and get there !

I will add maps soon ;-)

Successful start of hard training period

January was a bit stressful month for me.A lot of exams, studying and not enough time for training.Don t understand me wrong, I trained everyday, but not as much as I wanted :worried: .On 28th January, I pass my last exam  and already following day, ATU training camp in High Tatras (Štrbské Pleso) has begin.Perfect snow conditions and well prepared cross country skiing tracks caused, that nearly everyone preferred skiing trainings. We also made some running sessions to explore beauties of snowy mountains. But most interesting for me, were two sprint map trainings partly in deep snow with good route choice possibilities. It was important to forgot some summer-o habits and transform them to winter rules :D and conditions. For example: running on lake is fast and save  .
MAP TRAINING 1
MAP TRAINING 2
After these sessions we made detail route choice analyses, which shows how different (sometimes funny) route choices were used p: .
And after hard day, we analysed situation and drank some ion drinks for regeneration  (but just few  ).
To not forget my (alchemist) great room mates: sypač, son of mastičkár

, paštikár

and vetrač

(hard to translate :D ).I had a lot of fun with them! And finally I learned to play Poker (necessary to improve poker face skills...). From Saturday National team training camp will start, so now I am having few easier days to be ready for hard work.

Nice route choices at Christmas carp cup

Last Saturday, we had traditional Christmas competition in well-known area of Košice technical university (my home university). I ran in this area competition for the first time, but still ,I didn expect some surprises. But course setter (my coach Jozef Pollák -,,Kemo,,) set very interesting course with a lot of route choices. Great job Kemo!

My routes are red. Map in full size is HERE.
