The Box

, , , , , , , , , , , , ,

At just about three
(or it might have been four)
the mailman delivered a Box
to my door.

"This parcel's for you"
he said with a frown
and a worrying look
"Now write your name down
into my Received Book
so I can leave fast,
away from your door,
before you start opening
that Box on the floor"

Well, he didn't stay there
and he moved at a pace,
with a pitying gaze
all over his face.

So, I looked at the Box
and it looked back at me
while the clock on my wall
showed a quarter gone three,
and I knew, I just knew,
there was trouble in store
inside of that Box
as it lay by my door.

I tell you, I worried,
and worried so much
I decided to leave it
and never to touch
the Box or the string
with its shiny red wax
and its Seal of a gate
with the name "I.U.SNACH"

But it couldn't be left.
Oh no! - not a chance! -
I would see it each day
(in a half-sideways glance)
it would jangle my nerves
until I got cross
and it might even cause me
to shout at my boss!

The Box had to go.
So I thought very hard,
and decided to dig
a deep hole in my yard

I bulldozed the trees
and the bushes out there
and my eyes brimmed with tears
for I really did care
about all those green things
I had grown through the years.

Then I started digging,
until it was night,
and the stuff I dug out
made a mountainous height
but the mailman's last words
had given me shocks
and I knew it was right
to get rid of the Box.

In ten hours of digging
I buried the thing,
then I covered it up
with a giant concrete ring
left by great-uncle Jasper
just after he went
to the place Jaspers go
once they're worn out and spent.

It felt nice - it was good,
I can certainly say,
getting rid of that Box
in less than one day.

Sitting down on my porch
drinking push-me-up tea
had abolished my fears
and that suited me.

But the mailman came back,
he returned the next day
and remarked, with a smile,

"I just want to say
please hand back the parcel,
my record's a mess.
The Box should have gone
to another address".
