Lady Damorea's Musings

Mowing the Lawn

The last time I mowed our yard, I only did the flat part. I dislocated my knee more than a year ago, and it's never been the same. I enjoy mowing the lawn. It's nice to focus only on mowing. I do, of course, have to watch for critters like garter snakes or baby black snakes or praying mantis. I love these animals and more. They are good for our yard and our gardens. Every spring when I'm out walking through our yard, I find the praying mantis egg cases and make sure that they are left alone to hatch. This time of year, they are usually finished hatching and are busy eating and growing. When I mow, I can't hear the phone so there are few disturbances. I get to mow and enjoy the "zen" of mowing.

The Zen of Mowing! What a concept. I'll have to try it out with my self-propelled, fire-snorting, power mower! smile

I like insects that are unusual and large, like the Walking Stick and the Praying Mantis. I think that Walking Sticks are kind of stuck up, because they just ignore me when I say "HI" to them. Now a Praying Mantis does seem to at least acknowledge my existance and will look right at me when I say "HI", but they always look at me like I was stupid or something. Well maybe I am more stupid than a Praying Mantis, but at least I am friendly and not 'stand-offish' like they can be. I do not like Flies at all (especially those great big two-passenger ones). I live in a small apartment and so I do not have to (get to) mow anything.

I think the colored dragonflys are beautiful. Some are just plain brown and black. But some some often have some very vivid colors, like aqua or bright green. (to me thsy almost seem magical) And in my opinion nothing tops the beauty of a butterfly in the insect world.

I have heard the tree frogs chirp in the spring time, yet I have only seen one in my life time. Once when I was out picking berry's, this tiny little creature hopped right into my hand. Then it made a quick leaping hop right back into the bushes.

One of my favorite sounds of spring are the peepers around ponds. It brings back memories of being on our farm when I was 13. I use to love to sit out at night and listen to all the bug and night bird sounds. It was so calming. I miss it so much.
