In search of a new phone

, , ,

SXSW was fun, but I hurt my phone (which I use to demo Opera Mini) in the process. Here's what a broken screen looks like on a Samsung A900.

So now I'm wondering what my next phone should be. I'm thinking about getting an HTC Mogul, since it'd be nice to tether it to my laptop to get broadband internet wherever there's a good (EV-DO) cellular signal. Plus, I'd be able to use the latest and greatest version of Opera Mobile, and still demo Opera Mini using a JVM.

On the other hand, inexpensive flip phones are great for demos. They're really common, and when I show people Opera Mini on phones like that, it really surprises them how good their internet experience can be (using Opera Mini on a simple phone). Smaller phones tend to be sturdier, too, and are much cheaper to replace if necessary.

One option is to carry around two phones, one for use daily, and one for demo purposes, but that might be overkill.

Then there's also the news that Opera Mini is now available on the very cool Helio Ocean...

SXSW blogging

Over the next few days, I will be blogging fairly regularly while I'm at SXSW, along with a few My Opera members who will also be at the event. Here's the blog we made specifically for that purpose: http://my.opera.com/opera-sxsw-2008

SXSW browser panel from earlier this year finally online!

, , , ...

You can download it here: http://2007.sxsw.com/blogs/podcasts.php/2007/10/15/browser_wars

I had the pleasure of attending this panel - "Browser Wars Retrospective: Past, Present and Future Battlefields" - at SXSW back in March, and hearing Opera's philosophy and vision laid out and discussed by our very own Chief Standards Officer, Charles McCathieNevile, only made me prouder to be an Opera employee.

It was a very interesting discussion featuring the following panelists:
Arun Ranganathan: AOL
Brendan Eich: CTO, Mozilla
Charles McCathieNevile: CSO, Opera Software
Chris Wilson: IE Platform Architect, Microsoft

Putting these four intelligent people together (each with their own opinions) in front of an engaged audience resulted in a spirited conversation (especially during the Q & A). The panel got a good amount of attention afterwards, such as in the following articles and blog posts:

Mozilla CTO talks about mobile browsing (updated)

Since the browser world is constantly on the move (and I think Opera deserves some credit for that), a browser discussion from March 2007 might feel a little outdated to some, but it's interesting to look back to compare what was discussed and what has happened since then.

If you want to see Opera-related panels at the next SXSW, be sure to vote on the panels listed here: http://my.opera.com/chooseopera/blog/2007/09/04/have-browser-will-travel
