Designing websites to be Wii-friendly

, , , ...

Since I started working for Opera, I've made it a point to get to know more Web developers to find out what issues are important to them, what they think of Opera, and how the Opera browser can be improved to better suit their needs.

One thing forward-looking Web developers are very interested in is the shift away from the desktop when it comes to browsing. More and more people around the world are browsing on non-PC devices such as mobile phones. Opera is very proud to be a partner of Nintendo. As the makers of the Nintendo Wii Web browser, we are providing a state-of-the-art browsing experience that people are using in their living rooms.

If you are interested in making your website extra Wii-friendly (though the Wii browser handles most sites just fine without any tinkering), check out this excellent article by my colleage: Making Wii-friendly pages

Opera for Nintendo DS - US Release Announced!

, ,

After many months of waiting and speculation, Nintendo has finally announced that Opera for DS will be released in the United States, according to ign.com. The release schedule handed out by Nintendo of America at GDC 2007 indicates a June 4th release date.

I already have a European copy of the DS browser here in my office (in San Diego), but I'm glad to see it being released in more places. I use Opera Mobile on my smartphone, and even Opera Mini on the same phone, a lot more than I use the DS browser, but for those who have Wi-fi access either at school, public hotspots, or at home, it's a nice addition to the DS (which is cheaper than any smartphone or PDA I can think of, and it plays games a whole lot better).

PS: The new MyOpera community site is pretty sweet, don't you think?

New Jon von Tetzchner interview on Wired

"Opera CEO on iPhone, OLPC and the Mobile Future"

http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/2007/01/opera_ceo_on_ip.html

Every time I've read an interview of Jon von Tetzchner, or heard him speak, I've been impressed (and I'm not just saying that because he's the CEO of the company I work for). That's one reason I've been an Opera fan all these years.

When it comes to tech CEOs, I like watching Steve Jobs talk, as well. They have completely different styles, but I enjoy them both. Today's interview with Jon von Tetzchner does not disappoint, though it would have been satisfying to hear him comment on Steve Jobs's eyebrow-raising remark about the iPhone having the world's first usable cell phone browser. (I'll talk more about that later).

During the interview, Jon said "Opera is delivering on devices that are running less than 100MHz at this time." I imagine he's talking about the Nintendo DS, which has a 67Mhz main processor, but maybe there are others.

It's also nice to hear about Opera on the OLPC laptop, as well. Here's some recent news on that project from Claudio Santambrogio, one of my colleagues: http://my.opera.com/csant/blog/2007/01/10/more-on-the-olpc
