Opera's CTO attends browser summit at Yahoo

, ,

Courtesy of Opera Watch, I just watched a video of Opera's CTO, Håkon Wium Lie, presenting a talk on the future of web browsers, following talks given by representatives of Microsoft and Mozilla. I thought Håkon had a particularly fun and provocative presentation, and I hope to see him speaking more in the future, especially here in the US.

A tangled web

, , , ...

As I mentioned in my previous post, there are a lot of announcements to make sense of. In the world of mobile phones, for example, a bunch of partnerships were announced. If I'm reading correctly, the newly formed network of relationships (on the mobile front) looks something like this:

Opera and Samsung announced a partnership: http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2006/12/21/
Samsung and Google announced a partnership: http://www.google.com/press/pressrel/samsungandgoogle.html
Google and Apple announced a partnership: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/01/09iphone.html
Apple and Yahoo announced a partnership: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/01/09iphone.html
Yahoo and Opera announced a partnership: http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2007/01/08_2/

Try making sense of that!

And just when I thought everything was nice and neat in its own way, I read that Samsung is also partnering with Yahoo!: http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/press/ReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=224620

Opera, of course, has an ongoing relationship with Google (for the desktop browser), and runs well on Mac (which bodes well for a version of Opera on the iPhone?). In other words, Opera plays well with everyone.

Some Opera news

, , , ...

Since Daniel is away getting married, and the tech world is abuzz with news since CES is going on, I thought I'd pick up the slack and mention some items that would typically be discussed on Opera Watch.

First off, Opera announced today that it is partnering with Yahoo for mobile search. As such, Yahoo will replace Google as the default search on Opera Mini and Opera Mobile. When Yahoo's new oneSearch feature goes live in Q1 2007, that will be available on phones running Opera. Here is the press release: http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2007/01/08_2/

Here is a third-party article discussing the new arrangement: http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/topnews/wpn-60-20070108OperaGoesYahooForMobileSearch.html

On the devices side of things, Opera WebUI (Web user interface) for the Opera 9 SDK is now available: http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2007/01/08/

What this means, essentially, is that Opera provides a ton of flexibility for internet device makers who want to make Opera part of their user experience.

Some of my colleagues in the Devices group are currently at CES demoing Opera on Devices. (See the bottom of the press release for more details)

Finally, Nokia's new N800 internet tablet was just released, and it uses Opera as its web browser. Nokia's previous internet tablet, the N770, also used Opera. You can see a picture of the N800 being used to browse the web here: http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2007Jan/bpd20070108001242.htm
