Opera in the Valley

,

So here I am, sitting in a nice third story office in Mountain View, CA in the heart of Silicon Valley - home of companies like Google, Mozilla, Apple ... and now Opera!

Yup, as you may have heard, Opera now has an office in Silicon Valley. This week, Daniel Goldman and I are visiting the office as part of an important marketing team meeting. So far, it's been productive, but just a prelude to the massive amount of work we'll be doing in the next few months.

(A couple of trips to Oslo appear to be in my future as well.)

Because of the new office, I expect to be in northern California more frequently. If you're an Opera fan who is nearby, please let me know! We'll probably be hosting more user events in the area, and we'd love for you to attend.

Portland, Oregon... excellent idea for giving away flight tickets, Noah. Hopefully, Opera will have enough money. I wonder if Opera would want to "go on tour," so to speak. I'd definately go if they came to Portland.

Another possibility is to have a meetup with the specific goal to talk about how to make Opera's marketing "not suck." We could set up a live video stream to Oslo or San Diego or Silicon Valley.

Oooh... I like that idea. Have you seen Chris Pirillo's live chat. Basically, a couple Opera guys could sit in a room and talk to people through a live webcam, and we could respond over IRC. You could ask questions directly to people, almost as though they were in front of you, without the cost of everyone's plane ticket, and the ability for more users to join in on the chat.

Opera fans and employees getting together to talk specifically about Opera marketing? I'm all for it, and the video chat idea is good as well. For the user party we held in Tokyo several months ago, we had a surprise video chat with Jon S. von Tetzchner, so there's certainly a precedent.

Hmmm, sounds cool, I really want to talk to the opera team/bussiness. But doese the opera's bussiness go very far with thier plans? Or have they already met thier goal?

Noah: If you really want to learn more about Opera as a business, take a look at the material found here:

Hmm, it looks and it sounds simple, but I can still tell that they are getting somwhere. Maybe not as fast, but they are catching on. And hopefully that is good.

You couldn't have bothered to come up there when I was actually *there*, could you
