Opera browser for the Nintendo Wii ?

, ,

The internet is buzzing with news from E3 right now. So much information is being released, it's easy for any single bit of news to get lost in the shuffle. I was wondering if any Opera-related news was released during the Nintendo press conference that was held this morning, so I found a few reports, and lo and behold, the Opera browser is mentioned as running on the Nintendo Wii!

See the following reports:

NINTENDO E3 CONFERENCE - FULL REPORT (do a text search for "opera")

"The Wii can open the "Virtual Console" and the Opera browser (stored on a flash ROM) in just two or three seconds."

E3 2006: Nintendo pre-E3 press conference (see the entry for 10:28)

"The Wii will minimise load times too. Virtual Console and Opera Browser saved to flash rom will load within seconds."

The Wikipedia page for the Wii has been updated frequently today, and a new bit of information is the following: "The Wii will have built-in Wi-Fi, allowing certain games to be played online via a wireless link, as well as a web browser, based on Opera."

I know it's already late in Oslo, but is there anybody in the know who would like to confirm / comment on this?

Here's some of the buzz on the Opera Community forums:

Notice the unbridled enthusiasm from no fewer than 7 Opera employees. Hopefully, more details are forthcoming.

The following webpage on the official Nintendo site mentions Opera (near the bottom of the page) when translated from Japanese to English: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/e3_2006/wii/index.html

Here's an early scoop on the official announcement. (As I write this, there is still no press release on Opera.com)

"For our Wii console launch in 2006, we required a browser that was fast and secure with support for the latest standards," said Genyo Takeda, senior managing director for Nintendo's Integrated Research & Development Division.

"Opera proved perfect for our purposes," he said.
