Tuổi già cần vận động và sống lạc quan yêu đời, mới sống lâu và hạnh phúc được. Chúng tôi học khiêu vủ nhiều năm từ năm 60 tuổi đến nay, để giải trí và giử gìn sức khoẻ lúc tuổi già.
Khiêu vủ đem lại nhiều phút giây say đắm, hạnh phúc tuyệt vời. Các bạn có xem phim “Shall we dance?” chưa? Tâm trạng cũa tôi giống tâm trạng nhân vật trong phim nầy.., giống phần nào.
Trong các bửa tiệc ở Hoa Kỳ, như sinh nhật, đám cưới, họp bạn cuối tuần, Halloween, Tết v.v., giới trẻ Việt Nam rất thích nhảy Disco. Người Mỷ gọi môn nhảy nầy là New York Hustle.
Cô giáo dạy chúng tôi môn Hustle là Lori Ann Greenhouse, nhiều lần vô địch thế giới về môn Hustle, với partner củ là Roberto Pagan, và partner mới những năm sau nầy là Kelvin Roche. Mời các bạn xem vợ chồng già chúng tôi biểu diển Hustle tại DanceSport ở Manhattan, New York City, năm tôi 68 tuổi..
Chúng tôi chỉ học nhảy cho vui tuổi già, lúc con cái đã lớn khôn và sống cuộc đời riêng, hai vợ chồng già quyết tâm sống vui những ngày còn lại trong cuộc đời.
Ở Mỹ những người thích nhảy, và xài tiền để học nhảy và compete, người ta xếp vào hạng amateur. Chúng tôi học nhảy gần 10 năm, từ những năm 60 tới gần 70 tuổi mới hết đi compete (tranh tài vô địch hạng amateur vùng Đông Bắc Hoa Kỳ).

“The Hustle is a catchall name for several disco dances which were extremely popular in the 1970s. Today it mostly refers to a unique partner dance done in ballrooms and nightclubs. It has some features in common with swing dance. In the 1970s there was also a line dance called the Hustle -- which is regaining popularity as people throw 70's theme parties or schools have 70's dance performances. The 1977 movie Saturday Night Fever showed both the line and partner forms of hustle, as well as something referred to as the "tango hustle" (invented just for that film by the cast, according to the DVD commentary). Afterwards, different line dance and couple dance forms of the Hustle emerged, and some hustle dancers seemed to think at the time that hustle was the only partner dance in existence. "People used to dance rumba," they would say. But the huge popularity faded quickly as the hype that was created by the movie died down. But hustle has continued and is now a "ballroom dance;" it has taken a place besides swing, cha-cha-cha, tango, rumba, bolero, nightclub two step and other partner dances in America.
The couple dance form of hustle is usually called New York Hustle or Latin Hustle. It has some resemblance to, and steps in common with, swing and salsa dancing. As in the Latin dances, couples tend to move back and forth in a "slot" on the dance floor, as opposed to following a line of dance as in foxtrot.
One similarity between hustle and swing is that the lead takes the rock step on his left foot; however, if the dance is taught by counting, the rock step happens at the beginning of the count – "and-one, two, three" rather than at the end of the count as in swing – "left, right, rock-step". This can confuse beginner leads who are used to triple-step swing, because the lead rock-steps on the right side of his "track" in the swing basic but on the left side in the hustle basic.
One difference between hustle and most other partner dances is that clockwise movements, for both the individual and the couple, predominate. Counter-clockwise movements predominate in most ballroom dances.…”

Rumba là loại nhạc tình cảm êm dịu. Nhảy Rumba, người đàn bà phải rất phụ nữ, khiêu gợi và quyến rũ đàn ông. Nếu Paso Doble là điệu vũ của người đàn ông, người đàn ông phải dũng mảnh, hùng mạnh, thì Rumba ngược lại là điệu vũ cũa phái nữ, một cặp nhảy đẹp hay không là do tài khiêu gợi quyến rũ của người đàn bà...
“Rumba is a dance organically related to the rumba genre of Afro-Cuban music. Throughout the history one may trace several styles of dances called "Rumba".
Some dancers considered Rumba the most erotic and sensual Latin dance, for its relatively slow rhythm and the hip movement. Rumba is actually the second slowest Latin dance: the spectrum runs Bolero, Rumba, ChaChaCha, Mambo in order of the speed of the beat..

“Real interest in Latin music began about 1929. In the late 1920's, Xavier Cugat formed an orchestra that specialized in Latin American music. He opened at the Coconut Grove in Los Angeles and appeared in early sound movies such as "In Gay Madrid". Later in the 1930's, Cugat played at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. By the end of the decade he was recognized as having the outstanding Latin orchestra of the day.
In 1935, George Raft played the part of a suave dancer in the movie "Rumba", a rather superficial musical in which the hero finally won the heiress (Carol Lombard) through the mutual love of dancing.
In Europe, the introduction of Latin American dancing (Rumba in particular) owed much to the enthusiasm and interpretive ability of Monsieur Pierre (London's leading teacher in this dance form). In the 1930's with his partner, Doris Lavelle, he demonstrated and popularized Latin American dancing in London.
Pierre and Lavelle introduced the true "Cuban Rumba" which was finally established after much argument, as the official recognized version in 1955.
Rumba is the spirit and soul of Latin American music and dance. The fascinating rhythms and bodily expressions make the Rumba one of the most popular ballroom dances.”

Tuy nhiên “coach” cũa vợ chồng tôi các môn nhảy Latin (bao gồm Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Jive và Paso Doble) là Tatiana Loghishev, cựu vô địch Hoa Kỳ môn Latin, hạng Rising Star. Cô là partner củ của Tony Duvolani, rất nổi tiếng vì đả tham gia chương trình Dancing with the Stars, trên đài ABC.

Người Việt Nam mình nhảy Paso Doble trong các tiệc vui. Người Mỷ không nhảy môn nầy trong các party hay đám cưới. Paso Doble là môn nhảy competitive, nhảy trong các cuộc tranh tài môn Latin. Có 5 môn nhảy Latin, nhảy theo lối International: Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive và Paso Doble.
Trong các cuộc tranh tài quốc tế, các bạn có thể tranh tài ở nhiều cấp bậc khác nhau như: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Pre-championship và Championship. Môn Paso Doble chỉ được thi ở cấp bậc Championship mà thôi.
Nhảy Paso Doble, người đàn ông phải dũng mảnh và dáng dấp giống người Matador. Người đàn bà phải giống như chiếc khăn choàng (cape) cũa người đấu bò, quấn quít xung quanh người đàn ông, hoặc có khi là chính con bò tấn công người đàn ông.

“Pasodoble is based on music played at bullfights during the bullfighters' entrance (paseo) or during the passes (faena) just before the kill. The leader of this dance plays the part of the matador. The follower generally plays the part of the matador's cape, but can also represent the bull or a flamenco dancer in some figures…
Paso Doble, like Samba, is a progressive International Latin dance. The Paso Doble is the Latin dance most resembling the International Standard style, in that forward steps are taken with the heel lead, the frame is wider and more strictly kept up, and there is significantly different and less hip movement.
A significant number of paso doble songs are variants of España Cañi. The song has breaks in fixed positions in the song (two breaks at syllabus levels, three breaks and a longer song at Open levels). Traditionally Paso Doble routines are choreographed to match these breaks, as well as the musical phrases. Accordingly, most other ballroom Paso Doble tunes are written with similar breaks (those without are simply avoided in most competitions).
Because of its inherently choreographed tradition, ballroom Paso Doble for the most part danced only competitively, almost never socially — or at least not without sticking to some sort of previously-learned routine. This said, in Spain, France, Vietnam and some parts of Germany to the west of the river Rhine, it is danced socially as a lead (not choreographed) dance..”

Tuổi già cần vận động và sống lạc quan yêu đời, mới sống lâu và hạnh phúc được. Chúng tôi học khiêu vủ nhiều năm từ năm 60 tuổi đến nay, để giải trí và giử gìn sức khoẻ lúc tuổi già.
Khiêu vủ đem lại nhiều phút giây say đắm, hạnh phúc tuyệt vời. Các bạn có xem phim “Shall we dance?” chưa? Tâm trạng cũa tôi giống tâm trạng nhân vật trong phim nầy.., giống phần nào.

Chúng tôi học môn nầy với nhiều Thầy Cô khác nhau. Tuy nhiên “coach” cũa vợ chồng tôi các môn nhảy Latin (bao gồm Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Jive và Paso Doble) là Tatiana Loghishev, cựu vô địch Hoa Kỳ môn Latin, hạng Rising Star. Mấy lần về Việt Nam chỉ đi nhảy vui chơi với người tình trăm năm, và bạn bè, không có dịp nghiên cứu tìm hiểu sinh hoạt khiêu vủ ở quê nhà có giống hải ngoại không.
Nghĩa là có hội nào đặt ra qui luật và tiêu chuẩn nhảy và tranh tài, tổ chức giải vô địch, hoặc thì lên đẳng cấp, và các đằng cấp này (pre-bronze, bronze, silver, gold, pre-championship, championship), cũng như tiêu chuẩn nhảy phải theo sự chị phối của các cơ quan thế giới như IDSF (International DanceSport Federation) hay không?
Ở Mỷ, nếu các bạn khiêu vũ để giải trí với bạn bè, nhảy trong party, đám cưới, hoặc những buổi gặp gỡ cộng ðộng Việt Nam, bạn không phải gia nhập hội USA Dance. Tuy nhiên nếu bạn muốn nhảy đẹp, muốn đi học khiêu vũ thật sự với người Mỹ, Thầy Cô và trường học chánh thức của các bạn đều chịu sự chị phối của hội này.
Mười năm về trước, ở lứa tuổi gần 60 mươi, con cái lớn khôn và sống riêng, hai vợ chồng già rủ nhau đi học khiêu vũ với trường DanceSport ở New York, nơi nhiều tài tử đã học nhảy, như Al Pacino học nhảy Tango đóng màn nhảy Tango trong phim Scent of a woman, và nhiều tài tử khác như R. Geere chẳng hạn, để đóng phim Shall we dance?
Ở Mỹ mọi sinh hoạt khiêu vũ Amateur, đặc biệt là sinh hoạt competition, phải chịu sự chị phối cũa hội USA Dance. Amateur là một người thích khiêu vũ, lấy khiêu vũ làm thú tiêu khiễn, không nhận thù lao dạy nhảy, hay kiếm tiền và sống nhờ nghề dạy nhảy.
Muốn tranh tài và compete, các bạn phải là hội viên cũa hội USA Dance. Hai vợ chồng chúng tôi phải gia nhập hội USA Dance từ lúc hội nầy còn mang tên cũ USABDA (United States Amateurs Ballroom Dancers Association), và đả tham dự hoạt động khiêu vũ và tranh tài cũa Hội nầy trong nhiều năm ở cấp bậc regional, miền Đông Bắc Hoa Kỳ, và một lần ở miền Tây Hoa Kỳ tổ chức tại Anaheim Convention Center ở California..
Chúng tôi chỉ khiêu vũ Amateur, để giử gìn sức khoẻ lúc tuổi già, để có một thú vui chung giữa hai vợ chồng già, lúc con cái đả lớn khôn, lập gia đình, sống cuộc đời riêng, hai vợ chồng tìm thú vui chung lúc tuổi xế chiều.. Khiêu vũ đã mang đến chúng tôi nhiều giây phút say đắm, hạnh phúc tuyệt vời.
Mặc dầu không còn compete nữa, nhưng như hổ nhớ rừng, thỉnh thoảng nhớ lại thời oanh liệt xa xưa, vẫn thấy vui vui, nhớ nhớ..

Tuổi già cần vận động và sống lạc quan yêu đời, mới sống lâu và hạnh phúc được. Chúng tôi học khiêu vủ nhiều năm từ năm 60 tuổi đến nay, để giải trí và giử gìn sức khoẻ lúc tuổi già.
Khiêu vủ đem lại nhiều phút giây say đắm, hạnh phúc tuyệt vời. Các bạn có xem phim “Shall we dance?” chưa? Tâm trạng cũa tôi giống tâm trạng nhân vật trong phim nầy.., giống phần nào.
Người Việt Nam rất thích loại nhạc tình cảm nầy. Bolero được quan niệm như là Rumba chậm. Trên thế giới Rumba được chọn là một trong 5 môn Latin được tranh tài trong các competition về Latin. Bolero không được chọn..
“The romantic Bolero is the slowest of the Latin dances. It combines controlled movement with dramatic expression of the music.
History:
The Bolero has the same Afro-Cuban roots as the Rumba and is thought to have originated from Cuban or spanish folk dances such as Danzon and Beguine.
Music:
The Bolero is usually played in 4/4 time and its tempo is slower than that of the Rumba. While Rumba music is very rhythmical, the lyrical Bolero sounds more like a Latin Ballad.
Characteristics:
The Bolero has some different characteristics from its Cuban relative the Rumba. Its long sweeping side steps and use of rise and fall create a softness that makes this dance unique among the Rhythm dances. The expanding and contracting dance position makes a very dramatic and romantic statement. “

Khiêu vủ đem lại nhiều phút giây say đắm, hạnh phúc tuyệt vời. Các bạn có xem phim “Shall we dance?” chưa? Tâm trạng cũa tôi giống tâm trạng nhân vật trong phim nầy.., giống phần nào.
Saigon những nãm 1960-1970, giới trẻ thích nhảy Swing và Rock’n’roll. Mời các bạn xem lối nhảy Jive, xuất thân từ hai điệu nhảy trên, đuợc quốc tế công nhận là một trong 5 môn thi vô địch Latin trong các kỳ thi nhảy trên thế giới ngày nay..
“Jive is a term for a dance that evolved out of diverse related forerunners of African-American origin. Amongst them are the Lindy Hop from the thirties, Blues Swing, Boogie-Woogie from the forties, the Jitterbug followed by Rock'n'Roll in the fifties. American soldiers brought these dances to Europe around 1940, where they swiftly found a following among the young. After the war the boogie became the dominant form for popular music. However, it was never far from criticism as a foreign, vulgar dance. The famous ballroom dancing guru, Alex Moore, said that he had "never seen anything uglier". Tuổi già cần vận động và sống lạc quan yêu đời, mới sống lâu và hạnh phúc được. Chúng tôi học khiêu vủ nhiều năm từ năm 60 tuổi đến nay, để giải trí và giử gìn sức khoẻ lúc tuổi già.
Khiêu vủ đem lại nhiều phút giây say đắm, hạnh phúc tuyệt vời. Các bạn có xem phim “Shall we dance?” chưa? Tâm trạng cũa tôi giống tâm trạng nhân vật trong phim nầy.., giống phần nào.
Người Việt Nam mình rất thích Tango và Waltz. Nhạc Việt Nam có nhiều bản hai điệu nầy. Trong các đêm dạ vủ cộng đồng Việt Nam vùng New York, tôi nhận thấy luôn luôn có hai loại nhạc nầy. Ballroom tango, divided in recent decades into the "International" (English) and "European" styles, has descended from the tango styles that developed when the tango first went abroad to Europe and North America. The dance was simplified, adapted to the preferences of conventional ballroom dancers, and incorporated into the repertoire used in International Ballroom dance competitions. English Tango was first codified in October 1922, when it was proposed that it should only be danced to modern tunes, ideally at 30 bars per minute (i.e. 120 beats per minute - assuming a 4/4 measure).
Subsequently the English Tango evolved mainly as a highly competitive dance, while the American Tango evolved as an unjudged social dance with an emphasis on leading and following skills. This has led to some principal distinctions in basic technique and style. Nevertheless there are quite a few competitions held in the American style, and of course mutual borrowing of technique and dance patterns happens all the time.
Ballroom tangos also use different music and styling from Argentine tangos, with more staccato movements and the characteristic "head snaps". The head snaps are totally foreign to Argentine and Uruguayan tango.”

Naturally, these forlorn people found their way to the portenos, seeking drinks to drown their sorrows, temporary friendship, and any entertainment to help distract their depressed feelings. The variety of cultures combined to bring about a new style of music, formed from African beats, Indian rhythms, Latin influences, and the popular music of the pampas (flatlands) in Argentina.
As you may guess, this new music was dubbed Tango. Historians argue the name comes from the African candombe drum beat known as "tan-go", or possibly from Latin word tangere (to touch). The dance began as a pantomime of communication between prostitute and pimp. The improvisation was filled with emotional outpouring and suggestive gyration. This sexual choreography was accented by the melancholy drone of the bandoneon, a German instrument very similar to the accordion.
These crude beginnings developed into less obscene styles that symbolized the lower class of Argentina through the turn of the century. Throughout the tango’s evolution, two things remained constant: the background music of the bandoneon, and the passionate translation of emotions into dance.
International Style
As they did with many other dances, the Europeans (most notably the English) adopted the Tango and made it their own. A very powerful dance was the result, with big movements, dramatic gestures, and quick snaps of the head from one position to another. Grouped together in competitive events with the smooth ballroom dances, the International Tango incorporated many of the patterns characteristics of Waltz and Foxtrot. But it still mantains a very unique character which sets it apart from all of the other ballroom dances.”

“Waltz (tiếng Anh) hay Valse (tiếng Pháp) là loại nhạc nhảy xuất phát từ châu Âu với nhịp ba. Có những thể loại sau: Wien Waltz (Lướt nhanh), Boston Waltz (Vừa phải), Slow Waltz (Chậm) và cả Jazz Waltz. Ngoài ra Waltz còn có một số những loại điệu biến thể như Minuet và Scherzo. Tuy nhiên cũng có thể dùng điệu này trong việc lồng ghép hoặc những bài hát.

When first introduced into the English ballrooms in the early 1800's, the Waltz was denounced by both church and state for its vulgarity and immorality... this was, after all, the first time society had seen this outrageous dance position, with the man holding the lady so close to his body. But the very thing that brought it such criticism also made it appealing, and the Waltz was here to stay.
Throughout its history, the Waltz has undergone many changes. Even before its introduction into society as a ballroom dance, it was a country folk dance born in the seventeenth century in the suburbs of Austria and Bavaria. By the middle of the eighteenth century, the dance had grown in popularity and spread throughout Europe.
The Waltz was introduced into the United States in the mid-1800's. The standard Waltz tempo at this time was still very fast and quite demanding to the average dancer, and before long, composers were writing music which was much slower. From this music evolved a style of Waltz called the Boston, with slower turns, and more longer, gliding movements. While the Boston eventually faded away, it did stimulate the development of what we now know as Slow Waltz. Throughout the twentieth century, the English refined the movements and codified the technique into the competitive International style Slow Waltz.”

Cô là partner củ của Tony Duvolani, rất nổi tiếng vì đả tham gia chương trình Dancing with the Stars, trên đài ABC.

Cô giáo dạy chúng tôi môn Hustle là Lori Ann Greenhouse, nhiều lần vô địch thế giới về môn Hustle, với partner củ là Roberto Pagan, và partner mới những năm sau nầy là Kelvin Roche. Mời các bạn xem vợ chồng già chúng tôi biểu diển Hustle tại DanceSport ở Manhattan, New York City, năm tôi 68 tuổi..
