You have taught me the meaning of responsibility and tried the best that you know how to turn a boy to a responsible man...

, , ,

My name is Le Thanh Hoang Van and my dad is Le Thanh Hoang Dan. As you can see, there are fifteen letters in our names and there are fourteen similar letters between my dad and myself.

This December 2007 he will turn 70 and it is a very special year for him and I would like to wish him happy birthday and may he have many, many more years to spend with the family and friends.

Life begins after retirement. Ba, in many ways you have lived the values that are enviable and I wish that I can instill the same values in my sons. When I am confused and lost in the ompetitive world of chaos and temptation, I reflect on how you live your life with mom and use it as the guiding principles to make decision for my life and my family.

You have taught me the meaning of responsibility and tried the best that you know how to turn a boy to a responsible man and for that I will not forget.

Con, Trang, Timothy and Kevin wish you an early happy 70th birthday.

Grandpa, you're the man.. Well wishes from my grandson Timothy Lê, New Jersey..

, ,

Dear Grandpa,

I'm writing to you to wish you a birthday. I had no idea that being 70 years of age was of importance, but I guess now I do !

I know that I could count on you if I ever needed guidance or someone to light the correct path for me. Throughout your life you've experienced so much and have felt emotions that I may never be able to comprehend for many years to come. Your accomplishments have defined you, and to me, you are more powerful than any other man I know.

I'm pretty sure all of your children and grandchildren feel this way as well. I treasure all of our memories, and I'm sure there will be many more to come.

I have no idea what to write, but basically Grandpa, you're the man.

Love,

Timothy Lê

Well wishes from my grandson Michael Nguyen from Chicago: Happy 70th birthday.. Cháu ngoại ở Chicago mừng tuổi

, , ,

Dear Grandpa,

I would like to wish you a very happy birthday. I have to admit that I had never asked about your age or your birthday because, to be honest, I feel like both are irrelevant.

You are now 70 years of age, but I cannot allow myself to measure your life in years. Your life should be measured in your great accomplishments and the legacy that you have created. This maybe my youth speaking, but basically I feel that the span of your life should be attached to how much fun you have had and how others think of you.

A lifespan should not be attached to a number to represent all that you have done. To me, your age is measured by all the wisdom and knowledge that you have acquired. To me, you are a fantastic grandfather that has done much in his life.

I will never forget the many fond memories I have of our time spent together and I hope to add many more memories in the many years to come.

Your grandson,

Michael Nguyen

My grandson Dan Nguyen from Chicago.. Cháu ngoại ở Chicago mừng tuổi

, ,

Family has always been a value that has been held above all others in my family. It is a strong value that I hold close to me. I always remember the family vacations we go on with all of my relatives, and I have made many memories with my grandpa.

I will never forget the times I have made at his house in Queens Village. I remember walking across the street with the money grandpa gave to me to buy a popsicle on that hot summer day. I remember the cruise that we went on and all the money we wasted playing bingo. I will never forget the countless times we shared at the lake house in Florida. I will never forget my grandpa.

My grandpa is an extraordinary man. He has always made an effort to be there for his family, even when he his hurting. He displays many characters that one day I would like to instill in my children. Kindness, family values, humor, a unique sense of liveliness, and remarkable ability to dance.

I have an unwithering respect for my grandpa and would like to wish him a happy 70th birthday and many more to come.

Your grandson,

Dan Nguyen

A Few Words From Bryson Le - Happy 70th Birthday from Calgary, Canada

, , ,

Even though I have only met my uncle Bac Hai Dan a few times, he has made quite an impression on me. With his fluid dancing or with his gentle demeanor, there was always a special aura surrounding him. My father, Le Thanh Long, has always spoken highly of his brother and when I got to meet him, I understood why.

I, Bryson Le, am the youngest son of Long. I am currently in my second year at University of Calgary taking the Cellular, Molecular, and Microbial Biology program. Despite being separated geographically, through the special bond of family, we are always together and connected.

My favorite flower has always been the lotus flower and in many ways, my uncle’s life can be compared to one. The roots of a lotus flower will grow from the mud and even though it is rooted in the mud, a beautiful flower with a sweet scent will grow. My father tells me that life was hard coming from Vietnam as a refugee with the language barrier. Despite certain hardships, my uncle, Bac Hai Dan was able to overcome adversity and obtaining a master’s degree in MS information systems, a degree in professional studies in business economics and a degree in professional studies in corporate finance. More importantly, he was able to experience so many things and live a wonderful life. Such magnificent feats are inspiring. Not only was he a student of the books, he was in many ways, a student of life. To be able to come from the mud of hardships and be able to flourish into the flower that he’s become will always be inspirational.

I want to wish my uncle a happy 70 years of flourishing and for many years to come!

Well wishes from San Diego, California... Ti, Cam Ha and their 3 girls..

, , ,

Hi Uncle Dan,

Our family would like to wish you a very happy 70th birthday. Although we are seperated by distance you remain very close in our hearts. You have been an inspiration for our family. The dedication and love that you show to your family sets an example for Camha and I. I hope that one day I can be half the father and grandfather that you are. Have a very happy birthday, you deserve all the best. We will see you soon.

Love,

Ti, Camha, and the girls.

(Copy e'mail from my nephew Tran Hung -in the family we called him Ti- in California)

Uncle Dan,

A little update on our family. I am currently a Director of Case Management at a local hospital in San Diego. I'm an avid tennis player, I'm fortunate enough to be able to play 3 to 4 times a week. Camha is the Executive Administrative Assistant to the CEO of a local Bio-tech company. She is finishing her Bachelors Degree at a local University.

Britney will turn 5 in April, she is learning how to read and count and is active in tumbling, swimming, and tennis lessons. Ashley will turn 3 in March, she too is learning her ABCs and will be starting preschool in a few months. Her terrible twos are in high swing, we're working on her anger management. Jessica just turned 1 in January, she took her first steps just weeks ago, she is definitely the cutest of the three. They are showered with love from Camha and I and their grandparents...

Love,
Ti and Family

Các cháu mừng tuổi.. Well wishes from my nephew David Lê from Canada

, ,

(Bác sĩ Lê Thành Long là cựu học sinh Võ Trường Toản Saigon, một VTT thuộc đại gia đình Võ Trường Toản Alumni.. Cùng vợ và ba con, Bác sĩ Long hiện đang sinh sống ở Canada..)

Here's what my son wrote about you:

Whenever I think of my uncle Bac Hai Dan, I always remember a man with a
great stature, gentle demeanor, and who's always smiling. You might ask
how a man as tall as him can move so gracefully, but then you remember
that he was once the dance king of Saigon, as my dad would fondly tell me.

A bit about myself - my name is David Le, I'm the second child of my dad
Long, who happens to be Dan's youngest sibling. Even though our family
lives in Calgary Canada, and uncle Dan's family in New York, we are
blessed enough to see each other once in a while.

When I get that chance to see uncle Dan, I feel privileged to be in the presence of a great man who once took care of my father and his family when times in Saigon were hard with the passing of our family's patriarch Le Thanh Dieu. You see, there's more to Dan's smile than you would think. Surely our family is one that has seen its fair share of hard times. In spite of this, ours is a family that has proved its durability, its fortitude and we are good decent people that can band together - uncle Dan has all been a great example of this.

So you see, my uncle Dan's smile can tell a different story if you let it, where you can find the positive even after the negative. Sometimes I think back of uncle Dan's old house in Saigon, which is now a house to grow mushrooms (the legal kind of course!). The lesson there is that even in a house of darkness, life can flourish if you let it and uncle Dan's life has been a shining star.

I want to wish my uncle a happy 70th birthday and here's to 70 more years!

Lời cầu chúc sức khoẻ và hạnh phúc luôn ở mãi bên Thầy Cô.. Well wishes from a former student..

, , ,

Em.

My younger brother, Dr Lê Thanh Long from Canada

, , ,

Bác sĩ Lê Thành Long là cựu học sinh Võ Trường Toản Saigon, một VTT thuộc đại gia đình Võ Trường Toản Alumni.. Cùng vợ và ba con, Bác sĩ Long hiện đang sinh sống ở Canada..

This year is the year of 2007, the year of BOAR. This year is also the year that my older brother, MR LE THANH HOANG DAN reaches the landmark age: 70 years old. 70 years of his life, he has so many memories from the past, and still stands strongly for the future.

I am privileged that I have been along by his side for the past 58 years.

I remember well when he returned from PARIS... He was away to study, I was 7 years old,and had not seen him for 3 years. I stood at the doorstep , really wondered if I should run toward him and jump into his lap.

When I was a medical student, my DAD passed away early, I was always short of money, from time to time, he held my shoulders ,and put some needed cash into my pocket.

When he traveled abroad for seminars, he gave me a tiny, cute samurai knife which I valued soooo... much, I have brought it with me to CANADA when I left VIET NAM in 1975.

Time goes by, I am mature vith time, he gets older with time. With the pace of life, sometimes I forgot the value of his presence. One day 6 years ago my middle son, DAVID, asked me a question which I never forget. Why He never saw me hug my brother?

For the past few years, I met my brother on several occasions, each time I saw, he got more backache, he walked a little slower, he felt a little sleepier, and his face looked quite alike my MOM's face. And each time I met him , I truely "HUG HIM".

As a shy Asian middle age man, it is very difficult for me to express my feeling by "HUGGING". However, in my heart, I always felt that when I hugged my brother, I also hug the great memories of my childhood, the image of my beloved MOM, and most importantly I do hug MR LE THANH HOANG DAN, the person that I respect, value, love, and think about almost on every day of my life.

Khi nào Trời gọi mới chịu thôi.... Trời gọi thì thưa: chữa tới hồi

Vài câu thơ lưu niệm của Phạm hồng Điền (Nhạc sỉ dương

Tuổi của Anh cũng giống tuổi Tôi
Năm nay mình đã bảy mươi rồi
Nhưng hãy ráng yêu đời Anh nhé
Khi nào Trời gọi mới chịu thôi!

Suy nghĩ của Anh chắc giống Tôi
Công danh một thuở đã qua rồi
Thế sự giờ đây thôi bàn đến
Đàn ca nhảy múa hảy vui chơi .

(Chép lại e'mail của Anh Phạm Hồng Điền, một nhân sĩ, nhà văn vùng New York)

Em xin mạn phép Thầy cho em họa lại 4 câu đầu :
