Rong chơi trên con đường Route 66

Vừa rồi kỷ niệm 50 năm chung sống, hai vợ chồng tôi có dịp đi trên một con đường nổi danh thế giới, xa lộ đầu tiên của nước Mỹ, nối liền 8 tiểu bang, bắt đầu từ Chicago, chạy ngang qua các tiểu bang Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, và California, chấm dứt ở Los Angeles.
Đại lộ 66 là một đại lộ nổi danh trên thế giới. Trong đoàn du lịch thế giới của chúng tôi, ai cũng có nghe nói tới con đường này. Chỉ riêng vợ chồng tôi như thằng ngáo 34 năm sống tại Mỹ không biết gì về văn hóa và lịch sử nước này, chỉ biết nước Mỹ qua lăng kính của người Việt Nam bên này và bên kia, một nước thời ông Bush và đảng Cộng Hòa có vẻ như anh cao bồi thế giới.
Nước Mỹ hơn vậy. Mặc dầu lịch sử mới bắt đầu vài trăm năm nay thôi, nhưng hiện Mỹ là nước lảnh đạo thế giới trong nhiều địa hạt, đã hai lần đưa quân đến Âu Châu dẹp tan độc tài và thế chiến, đem lại hòa bình và thịnh vượng cho nhân loại.
Nước Mỹ có nhiều chuyện hay lắm, nhưng ít ai tìm hiểu, hãnh diện. Càng du lịch ở Mỹ, gặp gỡ người Mỹ bình thường, tôi càng cảm tình nhiều hơn với Mỹ, hiểu được cái hay cái đẹp, hiểu được người Mỹ bình thường, ưa chuộng làm việc, ưa chuộng dân chủ tự do, chỉ muốn theo đuổi hạnh phúc cho riêng mình và vợ con.
Như đã trình bày trong một entry trước “Đi giang hồ ở tiểu bang Arizona”, tại mỗi tiểu bang con đường 66 chạy qua, hiện có một bảo tàng viện lưu trữ và trưng bày những di vật của con đường nầy thuộc tiểu bang của họ.
Riêng Arizona có một thành phố nhỏ tên Williams còn giữ nguyên vẹn những tiệm tùng thời xưa rất hay. Williams giữ con đường 66 tới phút chót, là thành phố cuối cùng xây cất xa lộ mới. Sau đoạn đường 40 mới được xây dựng ở đây, xa lộ 66 cũ kỹ đã được bỏ phế, tới ngày nay. Xa lộ 66 bây giờ chỉ còn là kỷ niệm mà thôi.
Trong entry này xin chia sẻ với các bạn một vài hình ảnh kỷ niệm ở con đường 66. Đặc biệt khi đi trên con đường này anh tour guide có để cho chúng tôi nghe một bản nhạc “hit” của Bobby Troup do ban hợp ca Nat king Cole ca, sau đó ban nhạc The Rolling Stones cũng có trình diễn bản này.
Trong những năm từ 1950 và 1960 có nhiều chương trình TV nhắc đến con đường 66 nầy. Gần đây nhất vào năm 2006 trong phim Cars của Disney/Pixar, cũng có nhắc tới. (Sẽ bổ túc sau. Đoàn du khách xếp hàng chụp hình kỷ niệm với bảng xa lộ 66 còn sót lại ở Williams trước khi lên đường đi Las Vegas.

“U.S. Route 66 (also known as the Will Rogers Highway after the humorist, and colloquially known as the "Main Street of America" or the "Mother Road") was a highway in the U.S. Highway System. One of the original U.S. highways, Route 66, US Highway 66, was established on November 11, 1926. However, road signs did not go up until the following year.
The famous highway originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before ending at Los Angeles, encompassing a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km). It was recognized in popular culture by both a hit song (written by Bobby Troup and performed by the Nat King Cole Trio and The Rolling Stones, among others) and a television show in the 1950s and 1960s. More recently, U.S. Route 66 was referenced in the 2006 Disney/Pixar film Cars.
Route 66 underwent many improvements and realignments over its lifetime, changing its path and overall length. Many of the realignments gave travelers faster or safer routes, or detoured around city congestion. One realignment moved the western endpoint further west from downtown Barstow to Santa Monica.
Route 66 was a major path of the migrants who went west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and supported the economies of the communities through which the road passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive even with the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System.
US 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System on June 27, 1985 after it was decided the route was no longer relevant and had been replaced by the Interstate Highway System. Portions of the road that passed through Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona have been designated a National Scenic Byway of the name "Historic Route 66". It has begun to return to maps in this form. Some portions of the road in southern California have been redesignated "State Route 66", and others bear "Historic Route 66" signs and relevant historic information…”
