Would rather nghĩa giống như prefer, tuy nhiên khác về grammar.
I would rather drink coffee than orange juice.
I prefer drinking coffee to drinking orange juice. (I prefer coffee to orange juice)

Cách dùng cụ thể của would rather:
Đối với một subject.
Present.
S + would rather (not) + V(bare)
Ex: Tom would rather go to class tomorrow than today.
Past.
S + would rather (not) have + V3/ed.
Ex: Tom would rather have gone to class yesterday than today.
Đối với hai subjects.
Present Subjunctive
Có thể xảy ra.
S1 + would rather that S2 + V(bare)
I would rather that you call me tomorrow.
I would rather that she be now.
Các bạn quan sát động từ call và be luôn luôn ở dạng bare bất chấp chủ ngữ là you hay she.
Present contrary to fact.
Trái với sự thật ở hiện tại.
S1 + would rather that S2 + V(simple past tense)
Henry would rather that his girlfriend worked in the same department as he does. (Actually, his girlfriends does not work in the same department)
I would rather that it were winter now. (It is not winter now)
Past contrary to fact
S1 + would rather that + S2 + V(past perfect tense)
Tom would rather that Jill had gone to class yesterday. (Actually Jill didn’t go to class yesterday)
