The Yellow Ribbon

During the last three weeks, I had seen the yellow ribbon everywhere but I am not fully aware of what it means. I only know that it is for the late President Cory Aquino. And today, as I was watching TV and browsing the internet, the yellow ribbon is still there; on Yahoo, Friendster, Pinoy forums, Hero, CS9, Cinema One and etc. The Filipinos had tied the yellow ribbon on the streets when Tita Cory was in the hospital and during her burial procession.

I look for the meaning of this symbol because I am still not in this world when the Martial Law was uplifted. I got no clues on why people are clinging for it. And this is what I found out:

The yellow ribbon is a symbol usually associated with the return of a love one or military troops. In the Philippines, it was first used when Senator Ninoy Aquino returned to the Philippines after being exiled. The ribbons were tied along the street to welcome his return but on which he failed to see because he got assassinated as he set foot on the airport.
Then, recently, it was used again as a symbol of support for our ailing President Cory Aquino, the wife of Senator Ninoy. She adopted the use of yellow ribbon and its color as her campaign trademark during the 1986 election. After her passing, it is now being used as a symbol of remembrance and respect for her.

So, all along, I thought people had used that color because it was her presidential color. But I was wrong, it was a symbol that started from her husband's homecoming and is still being used by the Filipino nation as a way to remember a great leader.

So in fact it is the symbol of Love, Determination and Right path.

Fw days ago when you tell me about your president's death, I read about her on newspaper and I found that indeed she was a great leader and supporter of peace.

May she rest in peace!!
