News
I woke up today with a special of "In Memory of President Cory" airing on TV. This bad news made my morning a gloomy one (adding to the cold day). President Cory died at exactly 3:18 am today due to cardio respiratory arrest.

Former President Cory Aquino was the ordinary housewife of Senator Ninoy Aquino (assassinated during the Martial Law) who made it to Malacanang Palace. She was the one who stripped the reign of dictatorship from the late President Ferdinand Marcos and restored our democratic freedom. She was also the first woman president of the Philippines and the first woman leader in Asia. Her campaign symbol is the color yellow. President Aquino was featured in Time magazine for her leadership during the People Power revolution amidst the last days of Martial Law. As President, she experienced 9 coup d'etat attempts but she was able to face them and completed her six-year term as President. A woman with a firm belief to the Lord who used the rosary as her weapon against the struggles before and during her administration.
Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with colon cancer last May 2009. She received treatment for the illness but was returned to the hospital last June and never went out of it.
I encourage not only the Filipinos but everyone who is reading this blog to pray for her soul. Thank you Tita Cory for the freedom we are experiencing today. To the icon of Philippine democracy, I am proud to be called a Filipino!

The longest total eclipse will happen tomorrow in Asian region. This is believed to last for 5 minutes and will occur in India to Burma to Japan.
It's been 64 years since Japan has been able to witness this scenario so they prepared firework displays to celebrate this rare phenomena. As for Indian people, they were expected to stay inside their houses due to their belief that the invisible rays will strike on that day.
Two countries, different beliefs, different ways of looking at this one event.
Hope the Philippines can also witness it. I only remembered one total eclipse that happened during my childhood days. That time, sunglasses are not very much worn so we used film negatives to shield our eyes as we directly look at the fusion of two heavenly bodies.

Life, Culture
Even in the worst of lives, lives in which it seems nothing has gone as planned, when everything becomes a shambles, there are moments, bright and lucid moments, which for some reason that is never clear, remain with us forever. Good moments when, for only an instant in the BIG mess, everything seems right.
This isn't the big things - birth, marriage, moving to a new home, promotion, breaks. This is about the most infinitesimal of moments - tiny facets in the diamond of larger experience, things nobody else would notice or remember five minutes after they passed. Instants that made the giant leap.
As I had posted on my previous entries, I am working in the mountain. It is a rural place where most people are poor in terms of money but generous in their own way. As a teacher in their place, I really feel their appreciation for my decision to teach in their community instead of going with the big companies in the city. The life in there is not simple. Every morning people wake up early just to fetch water from the artesian pump. They carry the buckets of water for our baths. They prepare our meals with so much hospitality and treat us as if we are VIPs. If I were in the city, people won't be like this. They live in shambles but a cheery atmosphere is felt in their community everyday. Money is not a big deal as long as they eat and can reap their crops.
This I won't say that I am lucky to grew with a comfortable life. This is meant to teach me that people differs in outlook.

Life
I was deleting saved messages in my phone and I recollected the quotes that made me surpass the challenges that came upon me within the last 5 years.
When you demand the maximum from your body, the mind gains a strange spiritual strength. -Eleven Minutes, Paulo Coelho
Find out what you truly love to do and then direct all your energy towards doing it. -The Monk who Sold His Ferarri, Robert Shwarma
You mark the letters. the letters don't make you. -Stomp the Yard
Bluffing is yours, loving is mine. You can pretend you love someone but you can't pretend you don't. -My Girl
It's hard to wait for something that you know might never happen. But it's even harder to give up when it's everything you ever wanted.
It is when your hand aches that tells you that you are overusing it. It also tells you that so much have not been solved by your hands before. -My sis preparing for Math Finals
I can hear a child's dream that once filled the now empty room. The flowers that once danced under the sun are now barren and green. A life struck by loneliness tries to pull out from that dark depressing world. But only an impossible wish can make that life break free. Someday... Impossibility will be a probability. It isn't now or never, it only needs tym. For the first time, the world wasn't an incomprehensible jumble of fuzzy colors without form or purpose. -July 2005, breaking free

Softwares
My Opera Turbo alpha build started to malfunction. It no longer connects to the internet. I have the 9.64 ver but it connects properly. I don't know why that Turbo is acting like that. I really like it because it speeds up my internet connection, I am using cellphone as modem. I uninstalled the Turbo and downloaded the new Opera 10 beta, it's still not connecting. During installation, I thought maybe it's because I chose the upgrade option. So, I uninstall it again and make a separate install, still no success.
On the My Opera Community, I read that they released last week a browser that will change the internet. I don't know why the Opera Team is releasing browsers one after another. I downloaded Opera Unite from the Opera Lab. The article in there said that this browser is not your ordinary browser. It can be used as a file-sharing application as well as server for your website in case you have one. I installed it; it looks different from Opera 10. There are 3 icons at the bottom left: Opera Link, Opera Unite and Opera Turbo (the function I badly need). It connects instantly but even the turbo is enabled, I can't see the number of kb being saved. On the alpha build of Opera Turbo, there is always some numbers in Turbo icon. Does this mean that Unite is not functioning as expected?
I still haven't tried the Unite feature nor the file-sharing. I don't see my need for those.
Another thing that confuses me. How many Opera browsers are available? Is the Opera Unite the new Opera 10? Is there an Opera Turbo being developed or is it just a function for the new Opera builds?

Comments
As I was hanging out with my guy friends, one of them commented that I am one of the boys. But I am not offended.
Our conversation got in to the computer games. Then I said that I used to play counterstrike, War Craft, DOTA, Age of Empires. But now, I only play Crazy Kart and NBA Live. He was like, "So you like guy stuffs?" and I said, most of the time. I can play basketball (with girls), bowling and running; I don't mind getting dirty. I tired easily when I go shopping with my gal friends (I am no fashionista and I don't find shopping as exciting). I am active that sometimes people see me as tomboyish. Excuse me, but I am not a lesbo.
I just arrived from the mountains and checking my mails, then I have a mail which asks if I am a girl or boy? And then in the forum, people always mistake my identity as a boy so they call me bro or kuya (big brother). I don't mind those things because I know most people only assume gender based on names. I got confused, my name always appear as Lechylon. So tell me, does that name suggest that the user is a guy?

Linux
As everybody is suggesting that Xubuntu best suits my laptop's 256 MB RAM, I decided to download this light Ubuntu. It started last Thursday (Friday is a holiday, I have some time to spare).

I went to my Aunt's house to use her DSL connection. But it proved to me that it's slow, 10-20kbps. Then, a "brilliant" idea popped into my mind. I had been using my powerful N73 phone to download softwares and files from the net. So maybe, it can also download files which are 600MB big, just a theory that time. I am faced with the following problems: first, I need a 1GB Mini SD (I was still using the 128 MB SD included in the Nokia package); second, I need to find a fast proxy. To solve my first prob, I called my sis to buy me the Mini SD (worth 400 pesos) in the city. You will say, why not pay someone to download and burn the file? Though buying the SD was an expensive move, it will be handy for my future big time downloads. I was able to got hold of two fast proxies, 40-60 kbps (thanks to atomintersoft.com), though unstable yet had proved to be efficient. I simultaneously downloaded the 9.04 and 8.10 versions but the 9.04 link slowed at 25% so I decided to cancel it and stick with the later version. How was this possible? I used two versions of a mobile downloader and ran them at the same time because my phone can handle two connections at a time. The 8.10 downloaded successfully after 7 hours. The crazy part ends and another problem had risen.
I finally learned how to properly burn the iso image to a disk using Nero (thanks to MD and Mr. Steven). I inserted the disk and run the installer. Yahoo! I arrived at the language, keyboard, time zone settings, and when I reached the partitioning stage, flunk! I received a red note. Failed to partition. I asked Mr.Slackwaredave for some suggestions on what to choose during partitioning since he's running Xubunutu on his PC, but he can't remember the partitioning process. Then, I go to MD and he suggested that there should be an option with the sda something. But I haven't seen it when I ran a second installation. As you had observed, I don't give up easily. So, I searched the net and it had been fruitless. Only one move is left. I can give up my D: drive. I burned the files in drive to a CD and some were transferred to C:/. I used the Disk Manager to repartition it and make the 3GB free space (not indicating whether it's ntfs or fat32). I ran the installation again and choose the option with the "use the drive with large continuous space" in the partition stage. Tada, it installed within 30 mins! The version doesn't have a screenshot application and the print screen is not functioning as a copy button, so, there's no pic for this. By the way, the D: is where I had installed Ubuntu, bye-bye Ubuntu and welcome Xubuntu.
I like the way how Xubuntu looks compared to Ubuntu but it seems that the Kubuntu has more pre-installed applications.
My long weekend was spent on this trial and error experience.

Linux
As my Windows OS crashed due to Win32 virus, I was faced with the problem on how I will retrieve my precious files. I got interested to Linux when I read somewhere that some people are using it to retrieve their files.
I had the resource of unlimited and reliable DSL while I was staying in a dormitory. It had become my hobby to download softwares, antivirus, tools, editors, etc. then I burn them in a CD (I haven't upgraded to DVD RW) and compile them or lend to my classmates and friends if they need them. The first Linux I downloded was Puppy because of it's small size (easy to download) and for the sake of my curiosity. I ran it and I got impressed with the fast speed of internet browsing. It had become my OS whenever I need to surf the net during my college days. I can even watch the movies stored in my HD. It's preloaded with apps but I don't know how to add one and configure the theme. I had looked for more distro and downloaded Zenwalk, Freespire, the newly released Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (that time) and Alinux (iso is still on my laptop because it won't fit on a 700mb CD).
To solve my problem, I used Puppy because I am somewhat familiar with it already. I successfully retrieved them and transfer them to my sis laptop. But when the stage of OS installation came, my laptop won't install any OS, it turns off everytime I reached the partitioning and formatting. The Linux live CDs that I had downloaded before were also no use, not one was booting properly and I can't get to the installation screen. Due to desperation, I tried and tried and finally installed Windows. The next day, the new Ubuntu and Kubuntu CDs that I ordered from shipit.ubuntu.com arrived, much to my surprise but it missed the exciting part of my experience.
Having lots of Linux in my CD case now, I tried them all last night to know why they won't boot. The Gutsy Gibbon that I have downloaded has a Wubi installer inside, I installed it and was able to ran the Live CD but it only gave me an unresponsive desktop. How come that the instruction says just reboot and it will do its task automatically? The Zenwalk and Freespire are leading me to the Caldera DOS DR boot and MD suggested that I type startx but the command is not valid. Then, I tried my newly arrived Kubuntu and Ubuntu CDs but still the unresponsive desktop and white screen. I thought it was my RAM but MD said he had run Ubuntu on a 192mb RAM. So, I can also ran it to a 256mb one.
I am persistent and won't just give up. I want to know why the Ubuntus are acting like that. I read some blogs and was able to discover the F4 SAFE GRAPHIC MODE during installation. I did it and voila, the desktops are now working on both Kubuntu and Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. The Kubuntu ran faster than Ubuntu even it was loaded with lots of graphic effects. I don't know why. I am still in Doubt if I will install it as a permanent OS (along with Windows) since it's running slower than normal under my laptop specs.

There's also an Xubuntu on which my specs will be suited but my prob is how I will download it. The fast connection that I have is at my Aunt's house and I haven't got the time now. I had taken a snapshot of the Kubuntu desktop.
