Flash? Shockwave? (and other Opera Plug-Ins)

,

[filed under "Some info for Opera users"]

What's the difference between Shockwave (player plugin) versus Flash (player plugin)?
answer

The current Flash Player PlugIn (from Adobe, formerly Macromedia) useable in Opera is

9,0,115,0 (2007-12-03).

(but note that there are some reported 'Compatibility problems with Adobe Flash Player 9 Update 3' for
Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris...; see http://www.opera.com/support/search/tagged/plug-ins/ )

According to the official website:

The difference between the Macromedia Flash and Shockwave Players

Flash and Shockwave Players are both free web Players from Adobe. Together, they bring you the best rich media content on the Internet. Each has a distinct purpose. Flash Player delivers fast loading front-end web applications, high-impact web site user interaction, interactive online advertising, and short to medium form animation.

[Shockwave Player] displays destination web content such as interactive multimedia product demos and training, e-merchandising applications, and rich-media multi-user games. Through [Xtras], [Shockwave Player] is also extendable to playback custom-built applications.

Who knows what "desination web content" is supposed to mean. (Or why the "P" in "Players" is capitalized.)

one important difference between the flash and shockwave players/plugins is that,
shockwave has also had 3d capabilities for sometime now. there are a lot of 3d online games( http://www.shockwave.com/gamelanding/burninrubber.jsp ) done in shockwave... right now thats one thing that flash lacks. a good 3d engine. there is some however hope. the opensource papervision( http://blog.papervision3d.org/ ) 3d engine is probably the next step towards realtime 3d in flash. so yes once that happens, then i guess shockwave would become obsolete.
