Been surfing PC specs and prices for quite a while now, so I thought I'd share which computer I decided to get.

I realized what I really wanted to spend my money on was a PC I could use like a tablet. Most of what I do with a PC, such as internet stuff, writing, art, pictures, work, email, etc doesn't require a super high end monster system. So I figure that if and when I replace my main PC (used for gaming, video editing, etc) and I discover that the tablet doesn't have enough "oomph" I can always just use virtual desktop to get the convenience of the tablet and the workhorse ability of my main PC.

So after some extensive shopping and agonizing, I went with the HP Pavilion tx1000 customizable Notebook Tablet Entertainment PC (GD617AV?).

"Our ultraportable, lightweight (~4 pounds / 1.8 kilograms), and powerful new HP Pavilion tx1000z Notebook PC features a high-definition, diagonal 12.1" BrightView display that opens for standard use or conveniently twists for viewing files and movies in cramped spaces."

As of Tuesday September 18 2007, that product page lists it as "Out of stock" and the base price as $1,000 after rebate.

I really wanted to get the IBM/lenovo X61 (ThinkPad x61 with MultiView + MultiTouch), but the price worked out to be $2,520 for the lenovo and about $1,350 for the HP, so I really couldn't bring myself to pay another $ 1,200 for the lenovo, even if it is a better product.

hi, i'm a cg artist i do a lot of 3d and 2d work. i recently upgraded my home and studio workstations to decent specs for 3d work and gaming. I'm now looking to buy my first mobile pc. i'm not looking for something that can handle the latest games or 3d programs or anything( i have realistic expectations) but i am interested in a tablet/convertible notebook for 2d painting..

hence my question, hows the calibration and sensitivity of the pen on your tx1000z ? non of the hp showrooms i went to had any pro painting software installed for me to try out. so i figured i'd ask anyone online who might have tried.

...

I've been struggling with getting used to the pen. I'd recommend you look for a Tablet that uses the pressure-sensitive type of pen (Wacom 'electromagnetic resonance' technology) -- these types of tablets also provide a button on the side of the pen for things like right clicking, and also sometimes include an end with a virtual eraser.

It appears that this pen/tablet technology is more geared toward just using the pen or your fingernail instead of a mouse, and handwriting.

(Oct 01 2007) - Stumbled across a page I created in 2003 but never posted for some reason. Updated it a little and posted to the lyberty.com site:

Wacom Cintiq - How Precise?

cool
thanks for the advice. ive seen the cintq, its perfect for my needs but a bit pricey which was why i figured on just getting a tablet pc.... costs just a little more than the cintiq but is mobile..

too bad about the pressure sensitivity of the HP tx1000 sad
do you know anyone who has tried out the HP Pavilion TX1201AU ?

The tx1201au is the same thing as the tx1000z: the only difference is that the "1201au" is a specific configuration (processor, ram, etc) of the "1000" line. (The "tx1000z" is the generic name for any custom configuration.) HP does have a model that is not a "touchscreen" - that is, is a Wacom-based model, but it's more expensive: Compaq tc4400 If you have a PC already, you should think about trying a Wacom tablet! They're relatively cheap (and the only difference is you don't write on the screen; you just write on the tablet, which is plugged in via USB): http://www.techtree.com/techtree/jsp/list.jsp?list=brand_cathome&brand_id=257 ---- Notes and links Wacom competitors: Stylo ($50 : 800 dpi); ACECAD DigiMemo L2 - Letter Size Digital Notepad with 32MB Memory and Tablet Combo ($140) "The DigiMemo L2 is a stand-alone device with storage capability that digitally captures and stores everything you write or draw." -- Why does HP want almost USD$2,000 for its [Compaq tc4400] when the (maximized) tx1000z costs only USD$1,400 ?
