A Study Examines Technology Gap in Use of Technology Among Different Generations

One of the database leaders Lexis-Nexis decided to examine how Boomers (44-60), Generation X (29-43) and Generation Y (28 and younger)use technology in the work space and released a study called
"Technology Gap Survey"

* Only seventeen percent of Boomers believe using laptops or PDAs during in-person meetings is
“efficient,” while more than one third of Gen Y do.

* Only twenty-eight percent of Boomers think blogging about work-related issues is acceptable, while forty percent of Gen Y workers do.

* Sixty-two percent of Gen Y professionals report accessing a social networking site from work, versus only fourteen percent of Boomers.

What to do, you ask? Well, library managers finally need to admit that social technology has an impact on the workflow and address it properly with the right training initiatives.

More and more customers want to learn about library programs from MySpace and Facebook pages, make comments on book reviews and look at pictures on Flickr to evaluate library programs, so the quicker we adapt, the better will be.
