Adieu Tristesse - Stanley Black

Hey where have I been? That's what I would like to know. And you know what I mean. But seriously, what you don't mean can't hurt you. So with that being said...Welcome back.

With my 28 year old turntable taking a hike on me and my 18 month old scanner joining in shortly thereafter, the lack of decent tools in the kitchen have kept me from offering anything vinyl recently. Being relegated to the archives and CD's, the licorice pizzas have been pretty much non-existent. New utensils are being installed as we speak and we should be back to the original concept of serving fresh vinyl, weekly, very soon.

Speaking of original, our very own Mrs. Pizza works with a very nice fellow who is affectionately known as Bongo Barry. Now, Bongo Barry is a very interesting character and you can read more about him and his work here. Basically, Bongo Barry uses music/drum therapy to assist mentally and physically disadvantaged children work toward wellness.

A while back I had given Bongo Barry the Incredible Bongo Band CD's and he informed me that he had never heard of them. He mentioned he really liked the music and wondered if I had any more music like this. Do I have any more? His birthday is just around the corner and Mrs. Pizza and I wanted to give him a musical birthday card. So we decided to give Bongo Barry a crash course in bongo oriented popular music of the 1950's and 1960's. Licorice Pizza style! As usual, the original cover art is the work of the lovely and talented Mrs. Pizza.

Go ahead and get this one. It really is Bongoliscious...

Jazz/Funk
ATOV 06608

CD 1 / Song 04 - Easter Afternoon

El Reza has placed a to go order of Jazz to be delivered. It is indeed an honor to provide him with a Double CD set of Jazz/Funk sides that ol LP likes to hear while slaving over a hot turntable.

The link to El Reza is in the comments or side bar. Go on over and say Hi, grab Reza Jazz and browze around as some mighty fine folks are contributing to his resurrected blog with some awesome compilations.

Tell 'em Licorice Pizza sent you.

Music to Spy By Volume 5
The Theme of the Crime
ATOV 06108

Crime Themes! This one was a fun comp to do but very hard to choose from all the great themes. It's in the can and another volume of great Crime Jazz is posted for all to enjoy.

I started with around 100 different themes and narrowed it down to around 50 or so. Only 30 +/- will fit on a CD so many were left on the kitchen floor. Instead of sweeping them up and tossing them in the diposal, I thought why not do like Hollyweird does when they make a DVD? So in addition to Volume 5 - The Theme of the Crime, I have included a bonus CD with "Deleted Themes"

Hey, might as well have some fun doing this. Slaving in a hot kitchen whipping up tastey Crime Comps is a tuff job. Plus you get the main course and desert with this meal of Crime Jazz!

No MiX this time. If no one asks then I will leave it as is.

Also, if you burn the comps to CD I recommend you burn with "No Gap" if your cd burner supports that feature. All of the files have been trimmed to start and finish with the gap pre-set.

The Living Strings
RCA's strings group. The Living Strings was more of a commercial creation than a musical entity. RCA producer Ethel Gabriel worked on the Melachrino Strings' "Moods in Music" series and developed The Living Strings as a package for RCA's budget label, Camden. The Living Strings were an unbilled European symphony--the Oslo Symphony at first, later the BBC and London symphonies--and the albums are all centered around a theme: the sea, the West, Broadway, night music. In England, Johnny Douglas was the primary arranger and conductor for the series, but Hill Bowen, Bob Sharples, and Geraldo made frequent contributions. Gabriel also tapped Mexican arrangers D'Artega and Rafael Armengol for albums such as The Living Strings Go South of the Border. The Living Strings were second only to the 101 Strings in their prolificness, and their numbers became a mainstay of easy-listening radio and commercial venues. Soon, Gabriel spawned "Living" ventures into other genres: Living Voices, Living Guitars (Al Caiola), Living Brass (Ray Martin), Living Marimbas (Leo Addeo), Living Jazz (Phil Bodner), Living Trio (Dick Hyman and Al Caiola), Living Percussion Phil Kraus) and Living Organ albums. This one is for Lounge Tracks. He was the first one to identify the correct answer to the contest question. Both LT and HV came up with entirely different answers than I was expecting.

Now that the contest is over. I can say I thought the answer was going to be "You Drive Me Crazy - Jackie Gleason" on Back to the Music of the Future and Shaken not Stirred. Any way I needed the excuse to make another compilation and we got two. Exotica and Easy. The two E's of Lounge.

Enjoy!

Funk is an American musical style that originated in the mid- to late-1960s when African American performers blended soul music, soul jazz and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music. Funk de-emphasizes melody and harmony, and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground. Unlike R&B and soul songs, which had many chord changes, funk songs are often based on an extended vamp on a single chord.

Like much of African music, funk typically consists of a complex groove with rhythm instruments such as electric guitar, electric bass, Hammond organ, and drums playing interlocking rhythms. Funk bands also usually have a horn section of several saxophones, trumpets, and in some cases, a trombone, which plays rhythmic "shots".

Influential African American funk performers include James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton, and The Meters. Notable 1970s funk bands included Earth, Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, The Commodores, and Kool & the Gang. Funk music was a major influence on the development of 1970s disco music and funk samples are used in most styles of hip hop music. Source:Wikipedia

While all of the songs on this Comp do not meet the definition above exactly they are all Phunky! It has been awhile since we did a MiX here. There just isn't enough time these days to get them pushed out that quickly. So let's try something new. A Taste of Vinyl Compilation. Still fit on an 80 minute CD, but not mixed. I know some of you are going to be happy to hear these are all seperate mp3 files.

The files are trimmed and volume adjusted and come in all kinds of bitrates.

We'll try to refine the program a bit as we go along. MiXes will come now and again. I just thought we could try something new, due to the limited time constraints.
