Plas Johnson - Mood For The Blues
Capitol Records
T1503
Mono
1959

Plas Johnson played some of the most familiar saxophone notes of the twentieth century: the slinking intro to Henry Mancini's "Pink Panther Theme." First through the film, then through the airwaves, and now through decades of reruns of the Pink Panther cartoons, Plas Johnson's playing has seeped into the grey matter of millions, without one in ten thousand knowing his name.

Johnson was a favorite of Capitol star, Les Baxter, who wrote solos specially for him on African Jazz and Tamboo!. He also provided many of the smoky sax fills that became such a standard part of the orchestral accompaniments for vocalists in those days, recording with Nat "King" Cole, Peggy Lee, and Frank Sinatra.

Johnson's reputation made him a first-call player for almost twenty years. He maintained a hectic pace, usually averaging two sessions a day, playing everything from movie soundtracks to rock-n-roll singles. He was one of the crew of studio aces Brian Wilson used on most of the great Beach Boy records, and Ernie Freeman included Johnson on the many rock-oriented sessions he arranged. Neal Hefti used Johnson and trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison on his wonderful theme to the television series, The Odd Couple. Johnson's sax was an integral part of a number of rock groups that existed in name only, such as B. Bumble and the Stingers and the Mar-Ketts. Ironically, Johnson's busy schedule meant that he played on only the first few "Pink Panther" cartoons.

More Blues, the Saxy kind. From the album jacket it looks like foreplay means different things to different people...and she waited and waited. When you coming to bed Plas?

This one has been around some time and was pretty beat up. I did what I could in cleaning it up without sacrifice to the fidelity! All in all it still sounds very good.

SpotLight On: Rocking The Blues

, , ,

Most Rock 'n' Rollers of the 60's say that the Blues was their first love and much of their training came from listening to and emulating the Blues Masters! Men like, Willie Dixon, Elmore James, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters just to name a few.

These men hailed from the deep south, Mississippi and Georgia. Many migrated to Chicago where they created an entirely new sound. North or south the music was still rooted in one raw emotion and an unmistakable sound...The Blues!

This MiX spotlights the 1960's rockers who at one time or another all pay homage to the men that shaped their careers. Some of the groups were solid blues bands like The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Fleetwood Mac. Others, like The Rolling Stones and Led Zepplin, Eric Clapton and Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane & Hot Tuna) had primarily rock bands. Some of these bands were from England and some the U.S., it really made no difference because the blues has no boundries.

From time to time each gave us a glimpse of the core blues that influenced their music. These groups were, and for some, still are, the leaders in Rock 'n' Roll. By giving this MiX a listen you will realize these Rock 'n' Rollers were no strangers to the medium when they were...Rockin' The Blues!

A word of caution to my regular listeners: This is NOT Easy Listening!
