Wordless Vocals A Taste of Vinyl Compilation LP19308 Wow! - Russ Garcia
As the regulars well know we are not big into vocals here. But the human voice can be quite attractive or not when combined with musical instruments. Sometimes I think the lyrics just get in the way of what might have been a great tune. Sometimes the lyrics are the only thing that makes the song.
It would only seem appropriate that we create a compilation that contains "Wordless Vocals" here at the kitchen. For the last 5 months or so I have been throwing these songs with no words into a folder and have more than enough for 2 volumes. Here is the first one. If it goes well enough we'll whip up the second batch and serve it up to you hungry patrons.
For those of you who remember the MiXes we used to serve up, we have included a seperate file that has been specially MiXed...this is the one ol' LP listens to. But do not fear if you just want the mp3 files as stand alone. I have uploaded that as well. No corners cut on the comp. Files are trimmed, tagged and volume normalized to 90db. Take the compilation if you want seperate mp3 files and MiX if you like that concept. Cue files are included with the MiX.
So, ba ba bop be oohh ba be bo doh doh doh. Enjoy!
Bongo Heat A Taste of Vinyl Compilation LP-1188 2008 Adieu Tristesse - Stanley Black Hey where have I been? That's what I would like to know. And you know what I mean. But seriously, what you don't mean can't hurt you. So with that being said...Welcome back.
With my 28 year old turntable taking a hike on me and my 18 month old scanner joining in shortly thereafter, the lack of decent tools in the kitchen have kept me from offering anything vinyl recently. Being relegated to the archives and CD's, the licorice pizzas have been pretty much non-existent. New utensils are being installed as we speak and we should be back to the original concept of serving fresh vinyl, weekly, very soon.
Speaking of original, our very own Mrs. Pizza works with a very nice fellow who is affectionately known as Bongo Barry. Now, Bongo Barry is a very interesting character and you can read more about him and his work here. Basically, Bongo Barry uses music/drum therapy to assist mentally and physically disadvantaged children work toward wellness.
A while back I had given Bongo Barry the Incredible Bongo Band CD's and he informed me that he had never heard of them. He mentioned he really liked the music and wondered if I had any more music like this. Do I have any more? His birthday is just around the corner and Mrs. Pizza and I wanted to give him a musical birthday card. So we decided to give Bongo Barry a crash course in bongo oriented popular music of the 1950's and 1960's. Licorice Pizza style! As usual, the original cover art is the work of the lovely and talented Mrs. Pizza.
Go ahead and get this one. It really is Bongoliscious...
The Cool Scene - Twelve New Ways To Fly Warner Brothers WB1328 Mono Vinyl 1959 Dues Blues - Trombones Inc. Have you ever wondered what in the world happened to the Beatniks? In this picture we have hard evidence that Beatniks were self extincted. They all died of smoke inhalation. Even the non - smoking beatniks (beatnik girl in upper left) succumbed to second hand smoke.
There is absolutely zero info available on this one. Looks like all we can go by is the write up on the back of the album. Appears to be a Various Artist rendering from the Warner Brothers stable of talent. Just a little offering of several genres here. Crime, Exotica, Jazz, Easy Vocal, Latin etc.
As the album states and I believe it true...Together, these twelve examples of only the coolest add up to some of the most refreshing, dynamic listening available. They're vital, swinging and rewarding.
What are you waiting for?
As was pointed out in the comments this rip is not STEREO. And it is not my rip. My turntable has been on the fritz for several weeks now and I have been posting some old classics from my archives. If your not satisfied with any of the rips here...please return them for a full refund. I will give you back exactly what you paid.
I did find a Stereo copy of this here @ 192kbps and the inner sleeves scanned for the "dedicated" WB collector with zero sense of humor. This rip is @ 320kbps in Mono.
This one has been available to "Friends" only. But, it has become out of print, so...can move it over to the general site.
While my TT is down for the count let's look into the CD collection for some out of print items. This was part of the Ultra Lounge collection. All vocals, all ladies, all right.

The beautiful music of Polynesia, including Hawaii, has many surprises. At its best, as in this superbly recorded and arranged package, it represents a fusion of the melodic approach of American popular music with the rhythm of the Latin American countries. Similarly, this unusual and brilliant album contains many surprises.
Who would think that The Hawaiian War Chant, for example would make a perfect cha-cha? Would you believe, without hearing it, that "Now Is The Hour" could be played in three-quarter time, and yet not sound like a "waltz" in the traditional Viennese sense? Through the imagination of George Cates, these and many other musical miracles have been achieved. "Now Is The Hour," for example, keeps that same distinctly latin percussive pulse which, although in three-quarter time, completely removes the feeling of a waltz.
The foundation for all these exciting performances is provided by nearly a score of percussion instruments, some familiar, such as the tympani marimbas and xylophones; some exotic, including the Uli Uli, the Pu Hi, and the Boo-Bams. (A detailed list of all of the percussion can be found below).
Two noteworthy contributions to the melody elements should be mentioned: that of Buddy Cole, who used his Novachord so effectively, sometimes as a "string section" other times as part of the percussion effect, and often as the melody instrument; the other, the deft use of three soprano voices in combination with an alto flute, in such numbers as The Wedding Song, Beyond The Reef and, of course, Aloha Oe, without which one could hardly depart from this musical visit to those romantic islands. The soloist, Norma Zimmer, incidentally, was also the lovely voice which sang the obligate on George Gates' famous recording of Moonglow, with the added theme from Picnic.
These elements, carefully planned and beautifully executed, add up to a stereo-hi-fi delight.
PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS USED:
Guiro, Boo-bams, Rhythm Logs, Celeste, Marimba, Xylophone, Bells, Pu Ili (or Pui Sticks), Kalaau, Uli Uli, Tympani, Timbales, Conga Drum, Bongos, Maracas, Finger Cymbals (or "Ching-Chings"), Electric Bass, String Bass, and Triangle. Source: 317X
I let the folks at 317X share the above as they get it right. I was digging some Buddy Cole this morning and ran a google on his name and this album popped up as one he had participated in. After giving it a spin I thought I might share it with you.
As a bit of trivia. Alvino Rey and Buddy Cole were brother-in-laws. Both married to a King Sister. Both having daughters. They were in a pop vocal singing group of the 60's. "The Four King Cousins" with two other King girls.
Anyway, I thought it time to get some Exotica on the board. Please enjoy this rather enjoyable blend of great music.

Morton Gould - Jungle Drums RCA Victor LM-1994 Red Seal Mono 1957
Morton Gould was a child prodigy, playing the piano at the age of 4 and published his first piece of music, a waltz titled, "Just Six," two years later. He performed frequently throughout his childhood, on radio and in concert and vaudeville halls. He graduated from Julliard before the age of 16 and was hired as staff arranger and pianist at Radio City Music Hall.
In his early 20s, he moved to NBC radio and arranged and conducted the studio orchestra on a number of its regular shows. His composition "Pavanne" was written at this time and was widely performed and recorded. He got his own show showcasing "symphonic jazz" in 1939, and another series featuring general orchestral works in 1943. Throughout this time, he was also composing serious pieces on commissioned by such heavyweight conductors as Stokowski, Fritz Reiner, and Dmitri Mitropoulos.
He was the recipient of numerous awards, including Kennedy Center Honors in 1994 and the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for his "Stringmusic," commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra and composed as a tribute to its music director, Mstislav Rostropovich.
Guest conducting took Mr. Gould to the major orchestras of this country and to Australia, Japan, Mexico and Israel; he also appeared frequently as a guest piano soloist, and he recorded extensively. RCA reissued Gould's five Living Stereo albums on CD in 1996. Like Arthur Fiedler, he was a great lover of fire trucks and firemen, and one of his last pieces was written about a fire truck as an entertainment for his grandson.
Gould was an innovative and adventurous composer and arranger, but many of his recordings may sound too much like classical "pops" music to exotica listeners. Newcomers to Gould are recommended to check out "Jungle Drums" and then see whether more samples are called for. Source:Space Age Pop
One of the first albums I ever downloaded was this one. It was 128 kpbs and sounded like the owner used the album to sand concrete. I finally secured a much better copy and present it here for all of you.

Here is a real unusual group of recordings. I was searching around for a cover for an upcoming Bobby Hammack post and ran accross the site above. It looks like it is abandoned but maybe not. Most of the links are dead there, but the music is alive and well. Maybe some of you already have this but it was new to me!
The site states that they don't mind if the music is shared and the artists welcome it. This set is hard to describe but it's like Exotica meets Techno meets Space Age Pop! Sort of is and sort of isn't...It appears that the music was contributed by the folks that were part of a forum called the Exotica Mailing List. You will recognize some of the names, WeirdoMusic and Sem Sinatra are two I know of.
This set comes with all the gear: Case Cover, back and insert art as well as the CD art
Anyway here for your listening pleasure is Volume 1 of Two Zombies Later. Volume 2 is just below this post. Make sure you go to the link under the cover above. There are some very interesting liner notes for each of these songs

Reviewer: aaron m - - January 22, 2006 Subject: who "Exotica" is possibly the lamest genre name used, world over, and I dont know who the majority of these people are but the simple fact that such an exhaustive collection of space age lounge music can be put together with taste and smart+fun sounding contributions is pleasing in its own right.
As for the sound, it's the style of future/space cocktail lounge music originally laid by the likes of Esquivel! and carried on by bands like Combustible Edison, The Coctails, Stereolab, etc.
Good stuff. Is this possibly the same person using a aliases? It would almost be more surprisingly if it wasnt...
Reviewer: kareneliot - - January 20, 2006 Subject: A. K. A.: Martinibomb For those of you that may not know... Eric and Ryan Kilkenny from volume 1, track 2 (Bongo Avenger), are also known as "The Martinibomb". These 5 stars are just for them alone.
Check out their other Comfort Stand releases, you will probably like "The Coconut MonkeyRocket" If this style of music is up your alley.
Reviewer: JustinM - - January 8, 2006 Subject: Fun stuff! Pour yourself a mai-tai & kick back! Well-produced, loads of fun-- this album updates the 'exotica' sound, tossing in some sampling, electronics & synths for a modern audience. Diverse songs from diverse bands.
Reviewer: hermetiko - - April 14, 2005 Subject: Gran disco!!! me encanta este disco, no paro de escucharlo!!!!!
Reviewer: rjnagle - - March 23, 2005 Subject: a lovely understated Nature Boy IBID to everybody; I just wanted to point out how lovely (and yes, melancholy) Philip Jackson's Nature Boy piece is. The sound collages are a good counterpoint to it.
Reviewer: AppleGirl - - June 23, 2004 Subject: This needs to be on your iPod Exotica deluxe! An impressive collection of songs by an even more impressive collection of talented artists who truly "get it." First-quality tiki, exotica, groove-spy, cocktail, with a chill edge. These songs will make your summer more excellent.
I dowloaded nearly every track from my Southern California trailer park while wearing my fez and drinking a tasty concoction of whatever booze was left in the cupboard. Now I have to bid on more tikis for sale on e-bay. Chin Chin.
Reviewer: purusha - - February 4, 2004 Subject: hmm smootchy smootchy simply amazing. reminds me of good old martin denny's exotica masterpieces and david shea and scanner's electronica for young lovers. plus more!
Reviewer: OddioOverplay - - December 19, 2003 Subject: Fantastica! A refreshing release with top-notch music and top-notch packaging. You may find that a few tracks are not to your liking, but you are bound to find many more that you LOVE in this 2-CD set. The collection has wide appeal, so wide that folks in their 80s love it just as well as the little kids! Eat up!
