Blow Up - A Go Go!

Blow Up A-Go-Go! - James Clarke

I posted this one for the friends of Licorice Pizza last summer...but now it is out of print and we can offer this groove fest to the masses. Not my rip and thanks to the original uploader. I try to find out who was the original poster by checking the tags (there weren't any - but now there are. My pet peeve is tagged music.) and also on the Fuzzy Search, but it doesn't show up. Picked up back in 2005 I think. This one is similar to Instro Hipsters and Bun Hunga Combo.

A club compilation featuring classics both new and old that have filled the Blow Up Club Dancefloor over the years, from The Quik's 60s mod classic 'Bert's Apple Crumble' to the 90s spaceage beats of Soul Hooligan's 'Sweet Pea'.

"...Really, there's not a single duffer on here. Seeing The Kinks and The Spencer Davis Group on the track listing gives you an idea what you're in for - think Mary Quant clothes, Chelsea boots and Mini Coopers - but there are also names here that you'd never think of as cool, like Georgie Fame and Andy Williams, both of whom turn in shimmy-inducing corkers. Some of the songs are actually modern (Soul Hooligan and Karminsky Experience weren't even born in the Sixties) but fit in perfectly, while some tracks are so obscure (Mongo Santamaria? The Quik? Jacques Dutronc?) you'd have to be an A1 trainspotter to recognise them. But the that's the whole point of the thing..."SL

"London's famous Blow Up Club has been shaking dance floors on a weekly basis since the early 1990s. This collection gathers together some of its most popular favourites, a funky mix of Northern Soul, Latin jazz and 60s psychedelia. Wah-wah's, bongos and Hammond organs collide with tight basslines and bright brass, an unrelenting groove that will cause even the most cynical hips to shimmy. An assortment of never-forgotten classics--the Spencer Davis Group's "I'm A Man" (featuring a younger, funkier Steve Winwood on vocals), Andy Williams' version of "House Of Bamboo", the Coaster's "Love Potion No. 9"--mix with lesser known gems like the Quik's "Bert's Apple Crumble", the Incredible Bongo Band's "Bongolia" and James Clarke's "Blow Up A Go-Go"." Track 06 - Music In Transit

This one I have pulled from the archives. Circa 2005. (Thanks to the original uploader) It was a bit of a mess though and the track listing was out of wack. So this has been cleaned, tracks corrected and normalized. (Posted @ 320) Since I try to keep the kitchen rated G - The original cover was replaced with another version I found on the net.

Very little is written about this. Same details at almost every site.
More funky groovy-a-go-go instrumentals from Belgium. Again, a party soundtrack full of rhythm, organ, fuzz guitars and sexy sounds. Limited repress of this little known gem by dutch hammond king Roland Thyssen under his Bun Hunga pseudonym which has already been tipped as one of the best exploito albums of the continent.

You can listen to the sample above to get a sense of this one, but to better help you out I would say if you liked the Incredible Bongo Band and the Instro-Hipsters posts this will not be a let down. A solid mixture of Jazz, Rock and Funk euro style.

Funk is an American musical style that originated in the mid- to late-1960s when African American performers blended soul music, soul jazz and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music. Funk de-emphasizes melody and harmony, and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground. Unlike R&B and soul songs, which had many chord changes, funk songs are often based on an extended vamp on a single chord.

Like much of African music, funk typically consists of a complex groove with rhythm instruments such as electric guitar, electric bass, Hammond organ, and drums playing interlocking rhythms. Funk bands also usually have a horn section of several saxophones, trumpets, and in some cases, a trombone, which plays rhythmic "shots".

Influential African American funk performers include James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton, and The Meters. Notable 1970s funk bands included Earth, Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, The Commodores, and Kool & the Gang. Funk music was a major influence on the development of 1970s disco music and funk samples are used in most styles of hip hop music. Source:Wikipedia

While all of the songs on this Comp do not meet the definition above exactly they are all Phunky! It has been awhile since we did a MiX here. There just isn't enough time these days to get them pushed out that quickly. So let's try something new. A Taste of Vinyl Compilation. Still fit on an 80 minute CD, but not mixed. I know some of you are going to be happy to hear these are all seperate mp3 files.

The files are trimmed and volume adjusted and come in all kinds of bitrates.

We'll try to refine the program a bit as we go along. MiXes will come now and again. I just thought we could try something new, due to the limited time constraints.

Dusty Fingers MiX
A Taste of Vinyl Production

Dusty Fingers is a series of compilation records that are widely admired as breakbeats. Some of the songs featured in the series contain "open breaks" which enable DJs to easily transition into them, as well as attractive to producers who loop or rearrange them to create new compositions.

Following in the tradition of the "Ultimate Breaks and Beats" series, the Dusty Fingers records, 15 in all, contain an eclectic range of musical styles: mainly funk and jazz, but also include soul, rock, disco, and pop. Most are very obscure U.S and Euopean tracks dating from the late '60's and continuing through the mid to late '70's. These tracks are treasured by music conoisseurs and DJs.

The common, but hard to define thread in all of these songs is that they are "funky". The Dusty Fingers selection is even more obscure than that of "Ultimate Breaks and Beats" or Strictly Breaks. Many of the songs in the Dusty Fingers series have been sampled into new musical compositions, mainly by hip hop producers.

Here, Producer/DJ Deaf Timbo gets down with his bad self  and offers his Funky MiX Master treatment of samples from the 15 album offering of Dusty Fingers.

This MiX has straight ahead jazz and funk with a little crime sounds thrown in because that is what you want. Most of you regulars, if you look at the track list closely, will see some of the aritsts that make appearances here from time to time. A bit of a departure from the normal Licorice Pizza fare but a very good MiX of tunes nonetheless and I highly reccomend giving this one a spin. You won't be sorry! Enjoy!
