Music To Spy By Volume 4 - Combo MiX

Crime Jazz
Music 2 Spy By
Vol 4
Combo MiX

I just realized that I never posted Vol 4 of the Music To Spy By - Crime Jazz series. Oooops!

I would call this a throw away if it was not such a good MiX. I came up with Vol 2 and Vol 3 after putting this together and then just threw this one aside because it seemed as though I needed to make seperate MiXes seperating the genres of Library and Jazz and I did. This one is the initial MiX Vol 2 but instead became Vol 4. About 60% of the songs on this MiX are on either V2 or V3. 40% of the songs here are not on either of them. I just listened to this recently and really like the blend of the Jazz and Library styles.

Take it or leave it. The choice is yours. It is definately worth a listen

Dusty Finger MiX

Dusty Fingers MiX
A Taste of Vinyl Production

Dusty Fingers is a series of compilation records that are widely admired as breakbeats. Some of the songs featured in the series contain "open breaks" which enable DJs to easily transition into them, as well as attractive to producers who loop or rearrange them to create new compositions.

Following in the tradition of the "Ultimate Breaks and Beats" series, the Dusty Fingers records, 15 in all, contain an eclectic range of musical styles: mainly funk and jazz, but also include soul, rock, disco, and pop. Most are very obscure U.S and Euopean tracks dating from the late '60's and continuing through the mid to late '70's. These tracks are treasured by music conoisseurs and DJs.

The common, but hard to define thread in all of these songs is that they are "funky". The Dusty Fingers selection is even more obscure than that of "Ultimate Breaks and Beats" or Strictly Breaks. Many of the songs in the Dusty Fingers series have been sampled into new musical compositions, mainly by hip hop producers.

Here, Producer/DJ Deaf Timbo gets down with his bad self  and offers his Funky MiX Master treatment of samples from the 15 album offering of Dusty Fingers.

This MiX has straight ahead jazz and funk with a little crime sounds thrown in because that is what you want. Most of you regulars, if you look at the track list closely, will see some of the aritsts that make appearances here from time to time. A bit of a departure from the normal Licorice Pizza fare but a very good MiX of tunes nonetheless and I highly reccomend giving this one a spin. You won't be sorry! Enjoy!

Music To Spy By - Volume 2 / Jazz MiX

, ,

A Taste of Vinyl Production
MiXed by Stylus
2007

I figured it was about time to do a follow up to the Music To Spy By MiX. That was my third attempt at MiX and was my first Crime Jazz post. Volume 1 had a Space Age Pop/Bachelor Pad theme. It is by far the most downloaded MiX of all. I have been noticing that the Crime Jazz posts are hands down the most popular. Many of the comments for requests are "More Crime Jazz"

Now, the genre is Crime Jazz. However, while MiXing up Volume 2, I saw various musical strains developing and came up with not one, but 2 very different sounding MiXes. (I have saved the original MiX that got me to go in two different directions - this will be a seperate post, Volume 4) What was I thinking! So, that will give us a total of 4 volumes of Music To Spy By. That should hold everyone over for some time...hopefully!

The first one posted here today is Jazz in nature but not limited to Jazz alone so let the Jazz purists be forewarned! This has a generally Jazzy, Crime Jazzy, feel about it. I guess that's why they call it CRIME JAZZ.

So why not go back and visit Music To Spy By Volume 1 and then enjoy a far more edgy Volume 2.

Riflettore Sopra: Miscela Occidentale Degli Spaghetti

, ,

Un gusto di produzione del vinile - Riflettore Sopra: Spaghetti Occidentali
I don't know about you, but when I ride my favorite Italian stallion across the panoramic Spanish desert pretending that it is Italy, I require several things to ensure the proper mood is set.

First, I must be sporting the proper attire. I mean who of us wants to be spotted by Johnny or Ringo in the wrong outfit? Having the wrong ensemble on is no Good, it's Bad and Ugly. So for a Few Dollars More you can get set with the right gear. First the hat. Lots of cool ones to choose from and your choice, but I say stay as far away from the one like Dan Blocker wore in Bonanza. Then a good pair of boots and jangly spurs for sure. Don't forget the leather chaps. They just aren't for Bikers and that fellow in The Village People. Last, a serape sets the stage as it will keep you warm and you can hide your weapon underneath it.

Speaking of protection this is very important while out there on the range. You never can tell, when you are just minding your own business, and a nasty looking group of Bandits will ride up and want to hurt you or have some good old fashioned fun like burying you up to your neck in the sand and leaving you there. You can spot these mean people right away. Their voices never match their looks and the words always start long before their lips move and continue after they have stopped moving.

But most important of all is the right music! After all you can hardly slaughter a dozen men all by yourself if you don't have the right soundtrack playing in the background. This is where Licorice Pizza can help you.

A Taste of Vinyl presents to you an exclusive and comprehensive collection of the worlds least known Spaghetti Western songs. If you are a serious Bovine Person you are going to want this MiX. Attache speakers to your saddlebags on the trail to accentuate musically any situation you encounter. At the end of the day, Hang Em High from the nearest cactus by the campfire for thinking about how great life really is, out there on the range.

Vada avanti, faccia il vostro giorno. Hombre

SpotLight On: Esquivel

, ,

Most of Esquivel's recordings start with much the same big band with vocal chorus foundation as Ray Conniff and others, but his arrangements take every element to its limit. On "Latin-esque," he went to the extreme of channel separation by placing two orchestras in studios a block apart and mixing the result live in the booth. If Roger Williams uses a four octave run in his version of "Autumn Leaves," Esquivel would use six and split them among six different instruments, starting on the right channel and moving over to the left in the process. It's fitting that Esquivel's name was usually printed with an exclamation point: his trademark is the musical exclamation point, whether it's a "Pow!" sung by the chorus or a "zing" from a harpsichord.

Not all hi-fi buffs appreciated Esquivel's innovative writing for stereo. A critic in Audio magazine in 1962 described it as "mayhem in Latin tempos." In reviewing the reel-to-reel tape release of "Infinity in Sound, Vol. 2," High Fidelity magazine reviewer R.D. Darrell vented his spleen:

"Odd-sound fancier that I am, I have to draw the line somewhere, and for me, Esquivel oversteps it in his complete disregard for musical taste and tonal attractiveness. There is plenty of sonic sensationalism here, both in the frantically fancy arrangements and the spectacularly stereoistic recording, but almost without exception the crude effects cancel each other out. The sounds emanating from an electronic organ and a zu-zu-ing chorus, the nauseous glissandos on various instruments, and the squalling brasses are, for the most part, intolerable. There is at least some gusto in La Bamba, but for the rest, I'll take honest rock 'n' roll any day!"
How times have changes. Now listeners are abandoning dishonest rock 'n' roll in favor of Esquivel's "zu-zu-ing chorus" and "nauseous glissandos"--while many of Mr. Darrell's beloved reel-to-reels lie rotting in attics and garages. Source:Space Age Pop

Well nobody called Mr. Darrell as spokesman for the resurgence of the Space Age Pop genre in the early 90's. They did call Esquivel and he represented well, all that Bachelor Pad is. He died in 2002 and another of the pioneers have left us physically. But musically these masters of the music that many love to hear can be savored for ever!

SpotLight On: Rocking The Blues

, , ,

Most Rock 'n' Rollers of the 60's say that the Blues was their first love and much of their training came from listening to and emulating the Blues Masters! Men like, Willie Dixon, Elmore James, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters just to name a few.

These men hailed from the deep south, Mississippi and Georgia. Many migrated to Chicago where they created an entirely new sound. North or south the music was still rooted in one raw emotion and an unmistakable sound...The Blues!

This MiX spotlights the 1960's rockers who at one time or another all pay homage to the men that shaped their careers. Some of the groups were solid blues bands like The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Fleetwood Mac. Others, like The Rolling Stones and Led Zepplin, Eric Clapton and Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane & Hot Tuna) had primarily rock bands. Some of these bands were from England and some the U.S., it really made no difference because the blues has no boundries.

From time to time each gave us a glimpse of the core blues that influenced their music. These groups were, and for some, still are, the leaders in Rock 'n' Roll. By giving this MiX a listen you will realize these Rock 'n' Rollers were no strangers to the medium when they were...Rockin' The Blues!

A word of caution to my regular listeners: This is NOT Easy Listening!
