Loki's list of TV shows he'd like to watch, as per November 2011
Thursday, November 10, 2011 5:23:26 PM
I really, really like making lists, assuming the lists are about something I consider fun things. Like, say, TV shows I'd like to watch.
Currently, I'm mid-to-early in several shows (notably Doctor Who, Torchwood, Oz, Gilmore Girls, Weeds, The Emperor's New School and Monk), and so it might very well be quite long before I have the time to take any of these on. Still, rather than chronicle my list on an all too fallible computer which could crash, I'm going to chronicle it here!
(Disclaimer: While organised loosely by genre, the order within each paragraph is utterly random, and does not indicate any preferences towards the shows higher up on the list or somesuch. In other words, the ones I'm really not all that intrigued with (The Mentalist, New Girl or Cupid) but still feel I might enjoy if I checked them out are intermingled with the ones I feel strongly about watching as soon as possible (such as The Shield, Sports Night or The Good Wife), and everything between the two)

This list is mostly for my benefit, but if you feel like commenting, comments are always fun. What I wish comments on, in order:
1. Negative opinions on anything regarding the shows listed above, so I know what to prioritise down
2. Pitches for shows not listed here that you believe I might not have seen and that you strongly feel should be added to the list
3. Positive opinions on anything regarding the shows listed above, to compliment whatever spurred me to mention it on the list in the first place
...but anything at all which could spur fun conversation is of course welcome.

Curb Your Enthusiasm
- I really think you'd like this show, so while I haven't anything new to say about, I just want to bring it up again. It's incredibly smart, and I think you'd appreciate the obvious craft that goes into it. Larry David is on par with Sorkin or Whedon, in his own special way, of course. The newest season that aired during the summer was superb.
Extras
- Quite entertaining, and it had a better arc than I thought it would have. Very much a Gervais-show, so if you liked the Office, you'd appreciate this (plus the celebrity-cameos are HILARIOUS).
Peep Show
- Watched the pilot, and while it was good, it didn't tickle me enough to check it out further. From the same guys that make "Fresh Meat", so if you end up liking "Peep Show", you should consider watching that as well.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
- I really enjoy this show, but when I first watched it, its stand-alone nature made watching batches a bit tiresome. The jokes are often a bit on the cruder side, all though the ensemble makes them work. At its best it's sublime, at its worst, it's somewhat irksome. The first season is not as enjoyable as the rest. The current season has been very good indeed - in fact, it's not far behind Community & Parks in my personal comedy rankings for this fall.
Suburgatory
- Good cast (for the most part) makes up for its somewhat tame nature & unoriginal, but often well-crafted jokes. It seems to have no idea what to do with Alan Tudyk, which saddens me, but I'm willing to watch more to see if it finds its feet better. I remember Parks had a poor beginning as well, so maybe... One hopes.
New Girl
- Urgh, it's not good at all. I'd discourage you from giving this the time of day.
Lonesome Dove
- YES YES YES
The Shield
- YES YES YES
Friday Night Lights
- YES YES YES
The Walking Dead
- Not a show for you. I don't even know if it's a show for me. The only thing that tWD does well is building the tension before some zombies comes a-knocking. If you think you'd enjoy this, you should check it out, but from my experience with your taste, this would not suit you at all. The character-work in this is pretty poor, considering it spends all its time focused on a single group.
Treme
- I gave up on this. It's mostly a show-piece for New Orleans and its culture. It has a couple good characters, but it does everything it can to make you forget that. If you think you'd like endless music interludes with zero compelling plot or character arcs, then yes, this is the show for you.
Luther
- British cop show. I watched the pilot - it didn't hook me. I love Idris Elba though, so I've considered picking it back up again. It's got some good word on it.
Downton Abbey
- Surprisingly entertaining soap/drama that I enjoyed tremendously. I may be a sucker for the sheer Englishness of it all though, so if you're not an anglophile like me, you might find it... less enjoyable? I did not care for a couple plot lines here and there that got way too soapy, but all in all I highly recommend it. It's a very pretty shot & well-scored show as well. High-class product.
The Venture Bros.
- I remember I watched all of it some time ago, but for some reason I didn't keep up with subsequent seasons (I think I watched 3 seasons or so). It was very funny at times, and I like the way it played with conventions. You might very well enjoy this more than me, considering your love for animated fare.
Hope this helps,
Jon

And since I already acquired the first few episodes of New Girl, I think I'll probably watch the first one or two, just to see what it is. Assuming I'm not surprisingly crazy about it, I'll then take your word and drop it. Interested to hear you pitch on on It's Always Sunny in Philadelhpia - I had forgotten that you recommended that once, and was now mostly on the list due to my youngest brother's recommendations. With two different sources praising it, it'll climb a few notches in my esteem now (And thus in likelihood to be prioritised at some point).
Thanks for the comments! (And don't worry, all of your YES YES YES-es are among my top picks already. Would be watching The Shield right now if Sarah had not been so put off by its plain old cop show-sensibilities.)

The IT crowd is good and very funny, but nonsensical in a way you might find off-putting. Big Bang Theory has been going downhill, and I don't really think it'll win you over. Red Dwarf is brilliant. What I've seen of Coupling was very good, a really solid sitcom.
Boston Public is decent, but ultimately unremarkable. Treme, as I've already said, has a wonderful setting, but only two interesting characters, and by the end of the first season one was dead and the other idle, so no more chances for that. Revenge is a lot of fun, I think you'll like that one - lots of scheming and plotting and politicking with a dash of murder. You are well aware, I think, of my feelings regarding The Pretender, and I've found Suchet's Poirot very enjoyable whenever I've seen one.
I only saw the pilot of Jericho, it did not sell me. Supernatural is fun when it lets itself be, which is most of the time, but it also tends to fall into angsty bleakness on occasion. I haven't seen Avatar: The Last Airbender, but I've had it heartily recommended. The pilot of Sanctuary really, really failed to impress - as did Amanda Tapping's British accent.
Castle is just pure fun - very episodic, which might put you off, but the characters are wondeful. Although it does seem to forget which show it is about once a season and go full on X-files conspiracy thriller.
Warehouse 13 - I like it alright. I predict you will not. Even more so Eureka, which I do not really care for.
There, I think that's all the ones I have anything to say about.
Georgius the PeasantLoki Aesir # Friday, November 11, 2011 3:20:32 PM
And you're really selling me on Revenge.
In other news, we tried out the Suburgatory pilot yesterday, needing a sitcom and not having anything else on hand but that and New Girl, and quite liked it. Wasn't Great, and on occasion it was even rather wince-worthy, but it certainly had potential and also a lot of personality in a good way. Chuckled at several points, might even have laughed once or twice, so going to give this plenty of chances more.

Farscape
I recently tested this series myself, and got sucked in for the entire first season. Mostly because I realized just how extinct proper space operas have become. I'd advice you to ask yourself if you agree with the statement "there just aren't enough weird aliens on TV these days" and let the answer guide you.
Fringe
Why, oh why did you stop watching this? You were only half a season away from the serious interdimensional conflict flaring up. Season 4 has been a bit slow, though, and it looks as if the show might not make it to season 5 since they'll already have enough episodes for syndication.
Misfits
Have you tried it? It's like Heroes only better, with sex and drugs and cursing. And none of that "saving the world" crap.
Georgius the PeasantLoki Aesir # Saturday, November 12, 2011 3:57:08 PM
Then I heard a lot of great stuff about it in season 3, and I wanted to give it another chance, but as of yet I have not found the time or desire to prioritise it over other things. Hence its inclusion on this list.
I'll add Misfits to the list, thanks a bunch! And thanks for commenting!
