Deadwood, season 1

True, George R. R. Martin, creator of the astonishing "A Song of Ice and Fire"-books has recommended only three televised series on his webpages, this being one of them. True, the other two were the amazing "Rome" and the fracking unbeatable "Battlestar Galactica". True, I had high expectations for this show.
I had no clue.
This is as good as "Rome" was. Heck, it might even be somewhat better; there's less plot-irrelevant sex going on for three minutes here and three minutes there. It's no BSG, okay, but come on, nothing is, Joss Whedon himself has declared it the best television out there, and the Boss is rarely wrong.
The same, it would seem, could be said of Mr. Martin.
I hear Ian McShane won a Golden Globe for this. That's one of the most deserved awards ever, I have no doubt. The man owns every second of every scene he is in, and he's up against some pretty great co-characters. There are tons of things that make this show very good, but his character is what moves it well beyond great.
Alright, right now, I'm hyped on being in the middle of watching it, and sure, it won't seem as amazing two months from now. But still, this is good stuff. Very good stuff. My gods, though, is it violent, gritty and filled to the brink of swearing. That's not usually something I'd notice, but dear lords, even I notice on this show.
What's it about? Basically, it's a western, where there's this camp of settlers called "Deadwood" in Indian territory, meaning they're without US law and government hanging over their heads. Ensue pilot.
Only downside is there's only three seasons, 12 episodes each, and the chance of them getting to finish the plot in two tv-movies is according to wikipedia only 50-50.
It's fucking recommended. And I implore you all to go watch it.

The contrast between Swearengens overly long diatribes and Mr Wu's single word answers are very comical.
Mr Wu says - Swearingen!!! Cocksucker!!!! in response to 2 minutes of Al.

Sigh.
For some reason, I'd written this off as something I wouldn't need to watch. But now, when you've gone all implore'y, I have to reassess the situation.
Thanks a lot.
(Note that this "thank you" will be much less sarcastic if I actually like the show, once I get 'round to watching it. Which is to say, after I've watched Hogfather, Burn Notice, Scrubs season 6, at least some of that animated Batman thingy, and perhaps some B5...)

If it helps, it's a lot like Rome. Pseudo-historical, gritty and without real badguys and goodguys.

I've bumped it up to thrid place on my download list, just behind Scrubs s6 and Burn Notice. I'll probably watch it once I've finished these two, Hogfather (which is only, like, three hours long), thus bumping it up past Berserk on my viewing list. If I even bother to watch Berserk at all; I really don't like manga. Or anime. Or whatever it's called when its in this form. (Not that I really care.)
