Okay, so their plan is to, every second season or so, write off one of the main characters by turning them into a recurring villain?

Well, it's pretty original, I have to give them that.

Yes, well, it means they get to revamp the main cast somewhat without writing good characters completely out of the show, which is interesting. The first time they did it, I thought it was an interesting twist. Now that they're doing it again, what effects it will have remains to be seen.

The last one was more of a sidekick-type character, so while fresh, it didn't get huge implications for the show. But the one they did it with now... well, let's say that you'd write Giles out of the show in Buffy season 4 only to have him become a recurring villain partly controlled by nanite droids... It should be interesting, at least.
