Ieuan Does Something Really Stupid.....

Well sgunhouse here's what happened:

On September 29 I got a cool new wood splitter so I don't have to use a sledge & a wedge all winter long. So I built a platform for said splitter and start to heft it on the platform. The splitter is only a 120 pounds but all the weight is at one end and it's a bit awkward. Well it starts to slip and I catch it, and place it on the platform.

I noticed my back didn't feel quite right but I went to work the next day; between the initial strain and wearing a 15 pound duty belt for three days my back finally said ENOUGH! I go to the doctor and get some x-rays taken. Now I'm no doctor but I know that I'm supposed to have a curve in the lumbar region of my spine...it's gone, perfectly straight! My muscles were that strained.

The strain clears up but there was still something going on with my back. Long story short I have very long term nerve damage to the right side of spine. The specialists do blood and other tests but all is normal so they are are scratching their heads. I try to give them some information that may solve the riddle but I'm not the doctor. Maybe, just maybe, it was 5 years of being an audio engineer and roadie lifting insane amounts of weight on a daily basis, or the 6 years of Tae Kwon Do putting my hands and feet through bricks and boards, and finally the 20 years of carrying around a duty belt, jumping fences and wrestling suspects to the ground? Ya think guys?

So now I'm in physical therapy and should go back to work in Janurary. I just have to remember that I'm 45 and have to be a little kinder to my back as I advance in years. I'm not happy about this because my brain still thinks I'm 25 and bullet proof. Piss.

Introducing TYSON the skateboarding bulldog!!!

I ran across a goofy video of Tyson awhile back. Apparently Tyson has become a bit of an attraction in Los Angeles.

Here's his web site

If this is true....

I found this a bit late but if the following is true something needs to be done about The Dubya and done fast. Can we really wait two more years to let him create yet more damage to our constitution?

Bush on the Constitution: "Just a goddamned piece of paper"
By DOUG THOMPSON
Dec 9, 2005, 06:39

(WRITER'S NOTE: When this story was written, three sources told me they personally heard President Bush call the Constitution a "goddamned piece of paper." I have since learned that two of the sources were not present for the meeting and were, in fact, passing on second-hand information. The third now refuses to either confirm or deny the report. That leaves us with a decision. Do we kill the story or add this explanation? I originally killed the story but decided later to restore it to the database because there is still enough information floating around that suggests the President of the United States did make the statement. His actions through warrantless wiretapping, abuse of "signing statements" and attacks on civil liberties suggest such a statement reflects how he feels about the document that is supposed to define our country. I leave it to the reader to decide. At this point, two of the story's sources say they are repeating what they heard happened. It may be true. It may not. But we feel is worth consideration as part of the national debate. I have edited the column to reflect what the sources now claim.)

Last month, Republican Congressional leaders filed into the Oval Office to meet with President George W. Bush and talk about renewing the controversial USA Patriot Act.

Several provisions of the act, passed in the shell shocked period immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, caused enough anger that liberal groups like the American Civil Liberties Union had joined forces with prominent conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly and Bob Barr to oppose renewal.

GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.

"I don't give a goddamn," Bush retorted. "I'm the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way."

"Mr. President," one aide in the meeting said. "There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution."

"Stop throwing the Constitution in my face," Bush screamed back. "It's just a goddamned piece of paper!"

I've heard from two White House sources who claim they heard from others present in the meeting that the President of the United States called the Constitution "a goddamned piece of paper."

The record shows the Bush Administration, the Constitution of the United States is little more than toilet paper stained from all the shit that this group of power-mad despots have dumped on the freedoms that "goddamned piece of paper" used to guarantee.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, while still White House counsel, wrote that the "Constitution is an outdated document."

Put aside, for a moment, political affiliation or personal beliefs. It doesn't matter if you are a Democratic, Republican or Independent. It doesn't matter if you support the invasion or Iraq or not. Despite our differences, the Constitution has stood for two centuries as the defining document of our government, the final source to determine - in the end - if something is legal or right.

Every federal official - including the President - who takes an oath of office swears to "uphold and defend" the Constitution of the United States.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia says he cringes when someone calls the Constitution a "living document."

""Oh, how I hate the phrase we have-a 'living document,'" Scalia says. "We now have a Constitution that means whatever we want it to mean. The Constitution is not a living organism, for Pete's sake."

As a judge, Scalia says, "I don't have to prove that it's perfect; I just have to prove that it's better than anything else."

President Bush has proposed seven amendments to the Constitution over the last five years - a record for any modern President, including a controversial amendment to define marriage as a "union between a man and woman." Members of Congress have proposed some 11,000 amendments over the last decade, ranging from repeal of the right to bear arms to a Constitutional ban on abortion.

Scalia says the danger of tinkering with the Constitution comes from a loss of rights.

"We can take away rights just as we can grant new ones," Scalia warns. "Don't think that it's a one-way street."

And don't buy the White House hype that the USA Patriot Act is a necessary tool to fight terrorism. It is a dangerous law that infringes on the rights of every American citizen and, as one brave aide told President Bush, something that undermines the Constitution of the United States.

But why should Bush care? After all, the Constitution is just "a goddamned piece of paper."

While doing some research, hoping against hope, to find some more information on The Dubya's supposed statement, I ran across the following letter. Unfortunately it was not signed so the author remains unknown:

Let us start out with the fact that the Constitution is actually written on parchment, not paper. A trivial point, I grant you, but one that reveals (along with your inability to correctly pronounce the word "nuclear") a shocking lack of education in a head of state.

But to get to the point, the Constitution is not the parchment itself, but the ideas written upon it; ideas which form the foundations of our nation, ideas which would carry equal weight if written on stone, glass, metal, or even paper. These ideas are the soul of the nation. They include the recognition that the people of this nation have certain rights, rights which the government does not have the authority to remove. These rights include freedom of speech, to say what we think about the nation at any and all times, to write that opinion down and share it however we choose to. These rights include the freedom to worship as we choose, free from coercion. These rights include the right to privacy, in our homes and businesses, free from government intrusions other than in very specific and well-defined circumstances.

Maybe those rights are inconvenient to you, as such rights are always inconvenient to tyrants, but you are not allowed the choice which rights you will abide by or not. That too is spelled out explicitly in the Constitution.

The Constitution isn't just a piece of paper or parchment. It's a contract; the original contract with America. It's the contract you yourself swore an oath to preserve, protect, and defend against all enemies both foreign and domestic. You attached your name to that promise. You swore that oath before a judge of the United States Supreme Court, with your hand on a bible. That isn't just scenery for the cameras. Swearing an oath before a judge carries legal obligations with that oath, and legal penalties for breaking that oath.

The election process by which you claim authority is defined in that Constitution. And as you claim authority by Constitutional process, so too are you limited by Constitutional process. If you act outside the limits of the Constitution, you are no longer acting as the President, but as a private citizen abusing the powers with which you were trusted. A government that acts outside the Constitution ceases to be the legal government of this land.

The Constitution exists not only to tell the government what it may do, but more importantly what it may not do. You, as the President, are not allowed to declare wars without the US Congress. You, the President, are not allowed to seize people at random and send them off to be tortured. And most of all, you, the President, and not allowed to lie to the people and to the Congress.

Every President before you, including your father, swore that oath to preserve, protect, and defend that Constitution. Millions of Americans died in wars in the firm belief that the form of government describes on that parchment was worth such a sacrifice. To state that the Constitution is just a "dammed piece of paper" is a slap in the face of every American who ever donned the uniform of the military forces of this country.

Go over to Arlington National Cemetery. It's not that far from where you live. Look at those tombstones. By your statement, you have written across each and every one the words, "Died for a goddamned piece of paper."

I sincerely doubt The Dubya ever read this letter, and if he did it went right over his head.

Not a happy camper today

Just got home from the long week and I decided to listen to Howard Stern on Sirius. I don’t often, which is odd because I bought Sirius specifically because he’s on it. Initially I knew I was subscribing because I feel so strongly about free speech and Howard was heavily censored; basically subscribing was an unofficial “vote” on my part in favor of free speech.

Well my year is up and it’s time to decide to keep Sirius or not. Over the past year I have discovered that it’s a superior medium, the product is exceptional, and yes Howard is on it. The difference this time is that by subscribing I don’t feel I’m casting another vote for free speech. As I pull up my account information my first thought was: “While I still can.”

The “freest” country on the freaking planet and that’s my first thought?! Which Twilight Zone episode did I just walk into? Honestly, I can’t decide if I’m so pissed that I’ll sell blood for money to support every libertarian candidate in every state, or, if I’m so disgusted I just want to blow my head off.

Is the “While I still can” thought over reacting? Not when the Alaskan senator Ted Stevens-R lobbies to get satellite radio and cable mediums regulated by the FCC. No, I don’t think my feelings are far fetched.

The scary part is being witness to the erosion of my/our rights, and a government growing at an expediential rate. Scarier still is to actually speak with people who think such legislation on speech, and other rights, is not only reasonable but necessary. These are people who claim to be staunch patriots and yet they are going after the first amendment like a demented attack dog. Oddly enough get near the second amendment and you’ll see the conversation take a nasty turn. News flash: The constitution is not some buffet you get to pick and choose your favorite dishes from. We must take the document as a whole or abandon it all together. Choose.

In closing my dear government, piss off. I’m going to pay good money to hear someone say “fuck” on the radio. Not because I want to hear it but because you don’t want me to.

Mission accomplished. Yeah, right.

Egil’s is finally over!!!

Well after months of intense preparation our Barony’s largest event, The EGIL SKALLAGRIMSSON MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT XXXII, has come and gone. Oregon weather, true to form, brought torrential down pours a good portion of the time but this did not dampen the spirits, fun, or the Herculean efforts of all that made the event a roaring success.

Lady Katherine and I both received a huge surprise but I’ll get to that later. Also we did not get the chance to take any pictures as we were tending to our offices. I will add pictures when someone from the event posts them.

My duties as Chirurgeon (First Aid) and the Chirurgeons who helped out were not needed all too often which is a huge plus. As we say: “A bored Chirurgeon is a happy Chirurgeon.” There was however one young lad who was trying his skills at one of the forges. Working away on a piece the metal lost its dangerous red glow, before he could be stopped he picked up the piece he was working on and received a nasty burn. As I was tending to him he was a real trooper, I told his guardian that he would have to go to the hospital for further treatment and he was upset that he might miss some of the events. We assured him that we would be here when he returned and return he did! He made sure the doctors bandaged his hand in such a position so he could hold his bow and compete in the archery competition. Not only did he compete he won in his division! HUZZAH!!! yes

There were some beautiful encampments; especially camp Eisen that was so “period” there was not one mundane item in view, if they had any at all. There were even Laurels (Individuals skilled in the Arts and Sciences) who were blown away. I do hope some pictures get posted soon so I can put them up here… it really was something to see.

The evenings are my favorite times, there is just something about the fires in camps, drums, and general reveling that make the evenings magical. Lady Katherine and I had a great time walking about and talking to folks. Oh and the fire breathing / spinning talents of House Black Arrow were amazing!

Sadly I missed most of the fighting on Saturday as I was up all day Friday doing Chirurgeon duties then up all night as Constable. Even though I was a bit crispy, and missed some fun stuff I just love working at events. The SCA gives me so much I love being able to give something back, even if it does not feel like I’ve done enough.

During final Court on Sunday awards and gifts are given out. Lady Katherine was brought up and was inducted into the Order of the Vigilant Bear! This award is given for exceptional martial prowess in service to the Barony of Adiantum. She is an awesome archer and very deserving of this award. I am to say the least very proud of her. HUZZAH!!! knight

I had to take my Chirurgeon oath during Court. At one point of the oath it states: "and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption" the snickering of the Court stopped the reading of oath for the moment, they know me all too well. devil

Being as busy as we are one night we went to bed rather early. Around 2230 we hear one of our Heralds (Skarl) hailing our camp. I scramble to wake up thinking someone was hurt and needed medical attention. Skarl announced that Her Excellency requested my presence. Ok not a medical call, but I’m thinking WTF? I gather myself and exit my tent to see Their Excellencies, Sir Durin, Skarl, Francis, and a Lady I couldn’t see clearly in the dark holding torches. I bow and stood before them but nothing was being said; now I’m getting nervous. Her Excellency called for Katherine to come out as well. So we’re all waiting…and waiting, and finally Her Excellency said: “A blanket will be fine.” And Katherine had to explain that it’s not that she was indecent, she struggling with her shoes. I think she did that on purpose to make my torture last longer.

Katherine finally outside and by my side, Her Excellency began to speak. In all honesty due to being tired and nervous I don’t remember all that She said. I only know I got choked up. My Baroness then asked me if I would be Her Man-At-Arms. I was so stunned and honored that all I could do was fall to my knees. I accepted this great honor and took my oath. I only hope I can serve Her Excellency above and beyond the level she expects.

In my time in the SCA I have never had such respect or love for anyone I served under as I do for Baron Brutus and Baroness Katerine. They embody the very essence of what the SCA is about and I will be beyond grief when Their reign is completed.

A Great Commercial

I’m not into organized religion for many reasons, a major one being extreme hypocrisy, but last night I saw this awesome commercial for the United Church of Christ. It went something like this:

Interior shot of a church congregation. The camera focuses on a woman, most likely a single mother, holding a crying baby. We then see a shot of a thumb pressing a big red button, cut back to the woman and child but she is thrown into the air and out of the church by a huge spring in the pew.

Next two men sit down; one man puts his arm around the other one… same thumb, same button, both men ejected. The next scene we see several “undesirables” being hurled into the air left and right. There is no dialogue, just the sights and sounds of people being flung out of the church.

Finally there is a black screen with simple white text that read:

“God does not reject people…neither do we.”

Nicely done UCC, very nice indeed!

*EDIT* 05/02/2007

I just found the AD on YouTube, it's a bit longer than the original one I saw but I still like it. If only more Christians operated this way:

Interesting Hoax

When I’m out patrolling on my 1800 to 0600 shift, keeping the world safe from evil, I often listen to a rather odd radio program called Coast To Coast The show usually discusses such topics as UFO’s, alien abductions, paranormal thingies and so on. They do discuss relevant social issues on a serious level but I like the goofy stuff.

Recently I heard a program on this guy named John Titor. The host was talking with the attorney for the Titor family, it seems John was a time traveler from the year 2036... ok, quit laughing. As the story goes John arrived here from 2036 and started posting on a time travel message board; yes there is such a board :eye roll: It was entertaining so I set off to find out more about John and his story.

I located the John Titor site that had all of his posts from the board archived. Even better I found a link to the original Time Travel Institute boards he posted on. John posted for a brief time before returning to his “original time”

The really neat thing about this is that John not only weaved a tantalizing story he gave some “reasonable” warnings. I give you now a post I made on those boards to give my opinion on the subject:

Greetings unto all on this most interesting of message boards.

I'm really not very interested in time travel but I was drawn here due to something that piqued my curiosity. I was listening to Coast to Coast recently and heard an interview with the attorney for the family of John Titor and learned of his story. I was intrigued to say the least but also bummed when I found out I missed out on all of the fun. It's kind of like being around when the Hula-Hoop was big but not knowing it was there; and when you find out it existed they are all gone. Major buzz kill.

So I went in search of this John person and landed on the web site that had almost all of his posts archived and was even more bummed out; I hate missing good stuff. I eventually found the link to this site and got to read all of the exchanges, which was very cool.

I'm not a science geek even on the most basic of levels. I'm obsessed with two things: studying and recreating the Middle Ages and politics that support liberty. While what you explore here is not my personal cup of tea I got hooked on the Titor story.

Now I don't believe for one second that John was from 2036, not because I have the ability to debunk his technology or poke holes in his story, but because I'm one of those "I need hard proof to believe it" kind of people.

It doesn't take a visitor from the future or a psychic to point out that this country, and world for that matter, is on the express train to Hurt City. I think that's fairly obvious, so John isn't telling us much that one can't surmise from watching five minutes of international news. He was just more colorful on the details.

I am very grateful to John for two things. One is it was a very cool story and he really got into the role. If you turned off the technical / skeptical part of your brain it was entertaining and easy to get caught up in. And most importantly John said some things that we should heed and heed well.

One is to know our Constitution. How can you know your rights are being subverted if you don't know what your rights are? His point of leaving your digs the first time the government searches your homes reminded me of Nazi Germany. All those unfortunate souls that thought they could just ride the storm out died slow horrible deaths. I'm not going there folks.

Disaster preparedness and battle readiness was another. When everything blows if I'm not at 100% readiness I want to be ground zero. Surviving but not being able to fend well is more frightening to me than going up in a puff of smoke.

What we are putting into our bodies by way of what we eat. I have hunted and grown my veggies. When I buy food it's usually as organic as I can find. The crap we currently get from the market is close to garbage. Between the hormones in the meat and the engineered veggies I don't know which is worse.

The importance of community and gathering them now to band together when things go south is another great point. This is something I have already done and I think is very important.

These are just the high points of what John had to say that I'm down with. For those who just wanted to discredit him I think some really important stuff may have slipped by, I hope I'm wrong.

So John I know you're out there reading this, thanks man. It was one hell of a good story and most importantly a timely and sensible reminder. When the hammer falls I hope you have prepared as you have suggested.

Trendwest / Worldmark Time Shares

, , , ...

Greetings good people of the Internet! I had something that I just wanted to share with those who are looking into timeshares, to tell them what I have experienced, and to be very careful.

My wife and I went to a Trendwest seminar and sat through the presentation, which sounded great. After the pitch we sat down with the broker to talk seriously about the deal. After going over the basic nuts and bolts of the program our broker took us to a model suite to show us what Trendwest offers in terms of accommodations. It was beautiful, the view was breathtaking, and the suite was spacious with every amenity one could imagine. Really all you had to do was bring food and clothes and you are good to go!

Beyond the luxurious living conditions there was a gym, spa, video rental, you name it they had it. So what should you be careful of?

After our tour my wife and I sat down with the broker to finalize the deal. Now I’m somewhat familiar to the pitfalls of timeshares, the main one being not being able to book time when it is reasonable to one’s schedule. Trendwest stated they have solution to this problem by offering multiple locations. Well that’s only partially true.

When my wife and I spoke with our broker we were painfully clear that we work opposing schedules and days off. When we do have the chance to take vacation time it is often last minute, we stressed this point more than once. Our broker informed us that last minute booking was not a problem and we could actually save[/I][/u] points by booking last minute. Big fat lie number one!

On four separate occasions we tried to book time in two different places on five days notice. In each case we could not find accommodations. I spoke with customer service on this issue and received responses like: “Well how many places have you tried?” and “What do you think a timeshare means?” All I know is this…this is not what our broker promised us. We were also told we should book accommodations at least six months in advance.

The second issue we have is not a lie but more of a bait-and-switch. Our broker asked us what locations we would like to visit internationally. Naturally we expressed a desire to visit locations of our national origins as well as other places that strike our fancy. Our broker brought out this thick catalog of international locations we could our Trendwest points at. What he failed to tell us is that we would have to purchase an additional package to be able to visit these locations.

All of this sounded like a good deal, not “too good to be true”, but a good deal. We signed up. For us this is not only not a “good deal” it is something we cannot use. I’m not saying Trendwest itself is fraudulent, the locations exist and they offer what they advertise. Our broker just lied through his teeth when we were honest about our situation. If he had been honest and said this might not be the program for you when we told him we can only plan last minute I would not be writing this today.

I have two suggestions. One, if you cannot plan, at the very least, six months ahead to book accommodations this is not something you want to buy into. And two, have a lawyer review your contract!! You’ll get the usual: “We can only offer you this deal today” line but don’t bite. Even if you sign up you have the usual three days to back out of the contract but it will take much longer than three days to find out if it works for you or not.

In conclusion I really wish this had worked out for us. As I said the resorts are beautiful and they do offer everything under the sun; you just have to have the kind of lifestyle that offers you the luxury of very[/I] advanced planning.

The Other Side Of George

Now for those who think Carlin is a bitter dope smoking has-been this is great.

A wonderful Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but
shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more,
but have less; we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and
smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees
but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more
problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little,
drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too
little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our
possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and
hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to
life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but
have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer
space but not inner space.

We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air,
but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice.

We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less.

We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold
more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less
and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small
character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of
two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one
night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer,
to quiet, to kill.

It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the
stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time
when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going
to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to
you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your
side.

Remember to give a warm hug to the one next to you because that is the only
treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent. Remember,
to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all
mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep
inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday
that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak
and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.
