Drugs in Europe

I am reading in the news today that these are the top 3 countries for cocaine:
1. Spain
2. England
3. Italy

The city where I live (actually I live in the suburbs) is the top for drug usage in Italy, with about 50% people who had tried drugs at least once. Plus it seems 7% have got problems with alchool. Since finding drugs got much easier than before and the cost lowered a lot, it seems taking drugs and getting drunk is getting an habit for more and more young people who then blend in the general population instead of being inside some niches or being a obvious drop-out like addicts back when I was young.

It is everything part of today's world.
Taking drugs and drinking is needed for being "cool" at parties, same as wearing the right clothes, sporting the right hair cut and so on.
It isn't different from having tattoos and piercings despite pain and the risk of infections and allergies.

this is so sad... with all the information there is about drugs and the kids just don´t trust their elders anymore.

What elders you mean? Today's elders were young in the 60's and 70's... The only difference is back then there was more politics involved and drugs were more expensive and just a little more difficult to find.

Morrison

Cocaine became more popular in the '80s with the yuppies/fashion environment as the drug of successful and rich people.

Nothing new under the sun.

yeah, i guess people don´t pay attention to what happened to them. Great examples of what elders we´re paying attention to- great lives they had. And yes, I am being sarcastic.

Young people in the 60s and 70s didn't trust their elders either, maybe even less than today's. But nowadays there is such an angst of future I think, you just can't be sure what will be in 30 years, with all that climate change, job loss and so on. Maybe because of that more and more flee from reality?

I think it is much more simple. Young people just want to bee cool at parties, want to be cool among friends. So they do whatever it takes to be cool. It is part of being young to be stupid and believe to be immortal, to not be able to evaluate the risks. You drive fast, you drive while drunk, you jump from a bridge, you get a tattoo, you take drugs.

And you really have much more opportunities of stupid things to do!
