Twitter

Breaking news: Twitter is mostly about babbling.
http://www.pearanalytics.com/2009/twitter-study-reveals-interesting-results-about-usage/
What puzzles me is somebody did take Twitter seriously, like it was a media revolution instead of a variation of the old instant messengers. Oh but the newspapers will disappear because now the news are on Twitter. smile

duh it's just a chat program smile (don't these people know that?) I think people try to justify wasting time for fun social things sometimes rolleyes

Interesting article, wow this is a lot of detail, thanks for sharing smile

It is the old issue about people moving together like a brainless mass. This gets annoying when even people who should be more "technical" goes the same way. See Opera/MyOpera folks.

starree Wednesday, August 19, 2009 11:55:50 AM

I'm not sure the brainless mass can be prevented. My first rule learned in social psychology was the teacher saying "Humans are social animals" , that reminds me of this quite often when I see people in groups, we are drawn to each other, we are like pack animals faint

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Wednesday, August 19, 2009 3:21:36 PM

Ok then you must decide what to do with this information. For example you can use "psychology" to find people's weak points and then manipulate them. Basically that is the meaning of "management" and "marketing" or "politics". But it can be done also with girls, for instance.

I am seeing most companies using it to track customer satisfaction which is never a bad thing (most people won't complain about a service, statistically they just won't return)

I have heard a story where an airline customer never told anyone but posted an angry comment about flight service and they contacted him to make him happy.

As far as manipulation of women, you are right ...this seems to happen in every realm though wink

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Thursday, August 20, 2009 6:03:12 AM

I am almost NEVER satisfied as customer. My usual explanation is companies are lead by sales and marketing departments so basically they don't even understand the concept of good quality product because in their universe it is all about manipulating customers in believing poop is chocolate. Which I think explains 99.9% of our world.

But see, another point is most people are like women, they like to be told lies.

starree Thursday, August 20, 2009 5:31:15 PM

I'd have to say that I agree. I think the lies are a universal thing though. Men value truth more than women but they take it just as hard, they just mask it through ego.

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Friday, August 21, 2009 3:35:41 AM

Like I said, people (in general) like to be told lies. I guess this makes their lives easier. Independent thinking is demanding.

About women, I don't know but it seems they are complicated. In my experience while men are focused on basic tasks, women are always paying attention to details, usually about emotions, behaviors, relations with other people, etc, that from the male point of view are unimportant or often "imaginary". For males all those "details" are a problem when the goal is to go from point A to point B but it can also be lot of stuff you can use for manipulating. But on average it is too much work because there are few (temporary) reasons why you would need to manipulate. smile

starree Friday, August 21, 2009 11:06:50 PM

Well see this is why men and women are good for each other, he can focus on the big picture and she can tend to the details smile

that's always been my thoughts at least. maybe twitter has more females getting into it because we tend to like the details smile

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Saturday, August 22, 2009 5:14:15 AM

You know in contemporary age genders are not well defined. Boys are encouraged to look (and often act) a bit feminine and vice-versa. Maybe not in the rural areas but for sure in the metropolitan areas. Plus I was a teen in the stone age. So I am not sure about twitter. Traditionally computers were a male thing, maybe because of the hardware, maybe because of the yes-no basic logic. Or simply maybe because computers came from the military. I don't know if it is still true. Maybe all the "rich user esperience" stuff is about the "feminization" of computers. smile

Mizz MartínezMizzMartinez Sunday, August 23, 2009 3:47:41 PM

Don't really understand the meaning of Twitter! confused Oh...i forgot, there is no real purpose with it! p

starree Sunday, August 23, 2009 9:28:32 PM

Yes, traditionally computers were a male thing. Where I work many still think that way p

rich user experience is probably because us humans like to take something simple and make it complicated lol

A teen in the stone age? oh hush you aren't old rolleyes smile

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Monday, August 24, 2009 5:44:41 AM

Nope, "rich" in the contemporary meaning does not mean more complicated, it means more entertaining in the American way. It is something like "pimp my computer" or "pimp my Internet".

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Monday, August 24, 2009 6:09:53 AM

BTW, I am reading this:
"I see sentiment analysis becoming a standard feature of search engines".
http://news.cnet.com/Mining-the-Web-for-feelings%2C-not-facts/2100-1032_3-6249994.html?tag=newsEditorsPicksArea.0

Maybe gay search engines smile

starree Monday, August 24, 2009 11:47:19 AM

"pimp my computer" oh I hope they don't run of out stupid show ideas and go even lower down

gay search engines? rolleyes maybe ones that say "thank you , you are an awesome person for visiting this search engine" , it can be touchy feely (ok so gay, I get it)

It's funny how this article is basically also saying "we realized we can't screw people either because they can just go online and complain with each other" smile

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Monday, August 24, 2009 12:17:28 PM

I am old school:
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
(Asimov, around 1940)

What is "sentiment analysis"? Sounds like that horrible (gay?) android Data in Star Trek - The Next Generation. Basically a soap opera. There was also the emphatic counsellor Troy on the bridge. Worst Star Trek series ever. smile

starree Monday, August 24, 2009 5:42:15 PM

I got into that star trek series very briefly and yeah her character they wrote bad. Like when they are about to get attacked she says "I think they are mad" gee thanks Captain Obvious, haha.

Those are good robot laws but as humans make them and humans are flawed, so will the robots be flawed as well wink
