Easter - Pasqua

I had lunch with my brother and family. Here some pics.Barbara's mom an dad, my mom, brother Guido with Martina and Barbara.Me holding Martina Martina being carried as a bag of potatoes by dad (and not liking it much). Martina having fun sitting on the floor, probably her favorite place.
Pillows are there because she can't sit well yet and sometimes she falls head on and laughs.

Earthquake #4

So far 289 dead. This morning there is the funeral.

Earthquake #3

The toll is above 250 dead and 15 missing, about 1000 wounded. Rescue teams are still searching.

In the past Italy relied on the Army for quickly mobilizing manpower and aids like medical, transports, tents, cooking and so on. In the old pictures you always see young soldiers at work on the site, whatever the emergency was. Since the abolishing of the draft the Army does not have this role any more and it got substituted by a very complicated mix of many organizations, both from the State like firefighters and from private volunteers, that operate under the supervision of the "civil defense". It is very remarkable in my opinion how massive this organization is and how well and fast it works, despite Italians are not known for their organizing skills. The government had to stop several convoys of volunteers that were ready to move in from all Italy because after few hours there was already one rescue operator for two inhabitants and the overwhelming incoming help could be a problem in itself.

Earthquake #2

It seems there were about 200 dead. So far they have confirmed 180 but there are about 30 people still missing. There are about 20.000 people who lost their homes. Once the rescue teams have done with searching for missing people in the rubble, there will be discussions about what could have done to prevent this disaster and what to do now in the affected place and in the whole Italy. There isn't much to do actually, else than enforce better engineering in new buildings. Which is like trying to empty the sea with a spoon (italian saying).

Earthquake

Tonight there was a relatively strong earthquake in the area of the city of L'Aquila, in the region of Abruzzo. So far about 30 deaths have been reported.

One of the big issues is most buildings are ancient and cannot stand earthquakes. This time the earthquake was just "moderate" compared to others happened in the past but historical towns had been badly damaged. In theory we should rebuild Italy with modern engineering to be on the safe side.

I am definitely old

I must finally accept the fact that I am old. This morning I was washing my face over the sink and as I bended over it I felt a pain in my lower back. Now I am almost paralyzed and I can barely move. It sucks to grow old.

A new experience: diapers

Today I had to:
1. undress my niece Martina completely (all her clothes being pooped).
2. remove the pooped diaper.
3. wash the poop from her with one hand while holding her with the other arm over the sink.
4. dry her and put a clean diaper on.
5. put clean clothes on.
All this while my brother was supervising me and of course I was doing everything wrong and Martina was moving around like a snake and giving me kicks in the belly (thanks God I am not tall enough for her to hit the family jewels).
I was sweating.
Extreme.

First trip of 2009 - Lago di Como

,

Sometimes when I get bored I take the scooter and go around. Usually I go in the morning of summer weekends but today I needed it in the afternoon. One of my classical trips is crossing randomly the area between Milano and the mountains, called Brianza, then go to the lake Como and either go around it (but it takes a lot of time) or going to the city of Como and then ride to the city of Lecco, passing through Bellagio, or the same in the opposite direction. Today I went to Lecco first.

Martina's baptism

,

Today there was Martina's baptism. I was her godfather. So I could not take picture in the church. Maybe I will get some from other people who attended. I took these at the party my brother and Barbara had at their home. You can see the house is small, in fact it was crowded like the subway at 8.30 in the morning. And in the picture you can't see the little kids who were playing around.

There was a cake with a picture of Martina on top. My brother was upset because he did not like it, he said he did not want to cut her daughter with a knife. Yes we are a strange family.

At some point I was holding Martina and her mom came with the milk bottle so here I am. Martina is laying in a strange position but she was moving to look at people in the room. I did my best to keep the bottle in place. Given the size of the bottle, I guess Martina's body is an head connected to a stomach and not much else. I don't know where she can store all that milk
