Now the landscape is mostly brown. In summer it is dark green.
It looks "scandinavian" because this lake was created by a glacier during the ice age. The main difference is here there are MANY more people.

Yes, it could have been a tourist place. But historically it grew around some industries (iron, clothes) and trade with north Europe, especially Switzerland that is right behind those mountains. So there are some hotels and tourists but it is not the main activity around there.

Besides, the closer to the mountains and the colder it gets. In Milano city it is about 3-4 degrees warmer.
